OpenTTD is a business simulation game in which players try to earn money via transporting passengers and freight by road, rail, water and air. It is an open-source remake and expansion of the 1995 Chris Sawyer video game Transport Tycoon Deluxe.
OpenTTD duplicates most features of Transport Tycoon Deluxe and has many additions, including a range of map sizes, support for many languages, custom (user-made) artificial intelligence (AI), downloadable customisations, ports for several widely used operating systems, and a more user-friendly interface. OpenTTD also supports local area network (LAN) and Internet multiplayer, co-operative and competitive, for up to 255 players.
OpenTTD is free and open-source software licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2.0 and is under ongoing development. According to a study of the 61,154 open-source projects on SourceForge in the period between 1999 and 2005, OpenTTD ranked 8th most active open-source project to receive patches and contributions. In 2003 or 2004, development moved to their own server. Since 2018, the project uses GitHub for its source repository and bug tracker.

This is a great guide for beginners. I'm gonna link the playlist in the description of my OpenTTD videos :)
Thank you
Lol you. Your open ttd video was pretty funny
I watched this video and found this game because of your video, and now the second comment I see is you. Again, thank you for the content you make. It's amazing.

Oh dang, Jschlatt is here? Big fan of your funny mic
shoutout to everyone else that has decided to play a 20 year old game in 2020 and realized that these old games don't hold your hand whatsoever.
Yeah I installed it and before this video I was just wasting 99.9999% of my time
thats because a lot of games back then probably had a guide book on how to play
They did. The game manuals were literal mini books that had every single tip and strategy in them to get a general feel of the game.
*As I'm watching on my phone*
"You'll see I use double scale UI, that's so when I'm recording, people watching on mobile or on small screens can see what I'm doing"
You sir are a gentleman and a scholar.
I do my best :)
Yup, that was the point where I remembered to press the "Like" button.
So say we all 🙏🏻
bro is really reacting to every comment even 7 years later, legend!
Most of them. Still doing new content and events
This game just launched on steam a few days ago and here i am looking at these tutorials
Welcome
Same here!
This is a great guide not just for beginners, but even for people with lots of experience with management games. Even if you have never played a video game before this would be great. The way you articulate sentences makes me feel good, and not like I didn't know how to open a menu or click a button. I don't feel discouraged, in fact, this should be a marketing campaign for openttd. I love your voice, and your accent, (Because I was American from the start, I always thought English accents were cool.) this tutorial is amazingly helpful for me and many other people I have shown it to. Thank you for this video, and keep making great content!
Thank you for the comment. Glad you enjoyed it

It is a fun game to play. Especially in multiplayer games
Such an underated UA-camr and game
Thank you
I'm glad that I found this gem of a tycoon through Steam, I can tell that I'm going to have many hours of fun out of it! Thank you so much for the tutorial as well, although it is years old, it still holds up and helped me with grasping the basics. Much appreciated!
Glad you enjoy it!
yup I found this vid because I had no idea what to do... so thanks
Glad it helped. More OpenTTD on my channel
I love how it goes through the different eras so you can look forward to seeing what new technology becomes available
There are some nice mods that extend the game at either end like the vac tube one
I'm a complete newbie and after this guide, I jumped into the game and played for 3 hours straight. So, thanks a lot!! :)
You are welcome
Same I was looking for games to buy on steam and happened to cross this game and the reviews were really good so I decided to try it
Am I the only one who likes the old graphics more? Great tutorial btw, super fun!
Glad you like them!
I like them too. Especially compared to early 3d games like this (think Rollercoaster tycoon 2 vs Rollercoaster tycoon 3) the older 2d graphics had much more detail in comparison and the color was more vibrant and saturated. Though it kind of makes sense as the 90s already nearly perfected detailed 2d environments in games not long before the switch to 3d
"I might have to add more trains" oh dear lord please dont
Frodge well that escalated quickly.
Sheldon Cooper will never forgive you.
I heard about this game last night for the first time in the beginning of a playthrough video for another game. I've spent hours pouring over tutorials about how to play but yours so far has been the most thorough and easiest to understand. This playlist is gonna be a goldmine-- I can feel it.
Glad you found them helpful
(2:26) There are quite a few mods that allow for earlier starts with trains and horse and buggy!
I'm in a 1830 playthrough and just upgraded from a Gen1 Engine (Grasshopper) to the brand new state of the art Gen 2 Engine (Norris). I've gone from a pleasant 23 mph max to a blistering 35!🙀 Surely man was not meant to move at such speed!💀 1840 is awesome!😂
There are some good mods for both ends of the gameplay timeline
I was starting up OpenTTD for the first time, downloaded sound and music packs, but then got overwhelmed when I launched an empty scenario. This tutorial is exactly what I needed to get started. The rest I can probably figure out. (and if not I'll check out your other videos ^^)
Glad it was useful. I have a openttd help channel on my Discord. The wiki is also good for any questions you might have.
When you built the second airport directly next to the "town houses" in Tenpool that immediately made me think of Tempelhof in Berlin. When they built Tempelhof jets did not exist yet, so maybe it was not such a nuisance.
I bet that was a problem with a good few airports with that change
Wow, what a great tutorial! Everything was on point and quick, very easy to understand, with no random rambling, no taking hours to explain a simple mechanic, and nothing important (for a quick start guide) left out. All in all just a well done, well explained OpenTTD quick start tutorial that got me into this game. Thank you!
I gotta say, I love your nice and impactful mouse clicks. Without those destructive clicks that were so bashfully strong on the mouse button, I wouldn't have been able to know that I needed to click.
I was rooting for you on the Spiffing Brit BR last year, so now I'm showing my respects and watching this old series.
Thanks. My favourites are Let's play series 6 and 10
Thanks for this! I saved up for an airport and a plane, and immediately discovered how much money aircraft make when compared to bus routes. I made 500k in only 20 minutes!
Airports are good money makers early game
I usually start in 1930 as that gives you a decent amount of time to play with steam before the other options come along. Also, you start with only one locomotive and one aeroplane to choose from, so you're not quite so overwhelmed with choice at the start.
I believe the earliest start date changes for each climate you can play. Temperate 1925, Sub-Arctic 1945, TRopical1945, ToYland1946
There's no trains available until 1927 though so it's hard to get a decent start, I've always found.
You need GRF's to have a properly long game of Open TTD, but the base game is generally enough for a lot of people.
I think I just found the exact thing I needed to finally get into OpenTTD after knowing it for like a thousand years. This quick start guide is just perfect: clear, concise, complete, and it makes you feel ready to start toying with the basic aspects of the game. As I keep playing, I'll be checking your others tutorials, I'm sure they'll be as good as this one. Thanks a lot, I've been wanting to play this game for years!
I am studying Logistics management and I am feeling like this game is going to help me out a lot. So I hope that playlist will be just as well-informative and explained as this video.
Thank you
Thanks to your first 3 episodes I managed to made a over 500 000 000 krone business. But I don't understand why new models doesen't advance after the 1970's - mid 1980's.
wow this is actuallly pretty big for newcomers even for refreshing after a long time
Wow. You've got a pretty amazing tutorial here. It is informative. And it was even entertaining for me, even though I'm already pretty good at the game
Thank you. Glad you liked it
i legit just found out about this game, thanks for the tips from a Noob!
Hope you enjoy!
i i never watched this video i would still go in debt, now i can make up to 1 million in 10 minutes ,thank you!!
Glad you found it helpful
After getting Rise of Industry for free on epic games, I see openttd mentioned in a lot of discussions about the game. Tried it for myself since I saw it free on steam but the lack of in-game tutorials to at least get you familiarized with the mechanics was disappointing. Thanks a lot for this!
Ah you see. Well the game that this is based off came with a box and in that box there was a book and that book was the tutorial. The original game that this is based off is 30 years old this year. Things were very different back then. I'm glad the video was useful for you
Recently got in to this game, had no idea what I was doing.
Very helpful video, very efficiently and quickly breaking down how to set up routes and get things going.
Much appreciated!
Glad it was helpful for you
Thank uuu. I had no idea what to do, it's rare it doesn't come with a tutorial. But I really wanted to give it chance cause a men reviewed the game and he has 778 hours played 😂
It has to be good
The original game this is based off is so old it came with a paper book instructions
dude, thank you so much! I came here having no idea what to do, now I feel like Jeff Amazon!
Glad they were of use to you
Just gotten the game with no idea what to do or how it works xD , so this tutorial was very helpful
Glad it helped
A great tutorial. Those pilots have a need for speed driving 200k/h in an airport. :)
Yep specially in the smaller ones
Maybe the game just doesn't bother with speeds below 200 because in the air that'd be so slow
one of my trains made 2 million last year. Fantastic
accent 100
Oh and btw thanks for the tutorial i was looking at the game and was very confused but now i feel much more encouraged thanks
Thank you
cool, my dumb ass me earns 1k with 2 planes
Well well, i just get the Steam version of this game. I've been playing this game since a long wile. It wasn't called "OpenTTD" in those days, was just "Transport Tycoon Deluxe" at that time. So i've been playing this since a long time but with this viedo i just learned a couple of new things. It's amazing. Good job. 👍
The game has lots of new features. Glad you liked the video
i played it at least 20 years ago and still do... i love this game... My children love this game :-) so happy you can still download it :-)
this is an amazing video, you explain it so clearly and simply for my smooth brain™ to understand, lol. thanks for the help
No problems. Thanks you
Just found this game on mobile phones. Huge fan of the rct2 games and always wanted to play this. This video was a huge help!
Glad it was useful
Thank you. I appreciate your time and effort in explaining how to play this.
You are welcome
Thanks to this tutorial I took off! I started small with two airports and two planes, bus stops, then boats and then abusing energy stations with coal mines in the nearby 99999999 miles nearby!
This is a very helpful tutorial for a beginner learning to play OpenTTD. Thank you! Subbed and liked.
Thank you. Glad it was helpful
Wow, It seems so complicated , I Can't remember how i figured it out playing all day when i was 5 :D
Brilliant video. You are excellent at explaining and presenting things to people who are new to the topic.
Thank you very much
omg!!! 6 hours playing with default graphics!!! great tips man, thank you!!

Just got released on steam, I'm gonna try this!
Just found the game in the Google Play store, so thank you very much for this video. :)

Thank you for the tutorial, the game seemed to daunting to play but now it looks possible. God bless you!
Glad I could help!
BY FAR THE BEST TUTORIAL
I'm a beginner, And i am very thankfull for this guide! Thanks!
This was exactly what I needed, tyvm!
Good o
Thanks! Curious about OpenTTD - this helps! On to the rest of the playlist :)
thanks man i had some difficulties with the game and confusing. but this toturial helped me alot.
Great tutorial. I'm an avid Transport Fever player and really just wanted a basic tutorial to make sure things work relatively similarly to TF and they appear to. One slightly funny moment to me was around 15:00 in when you were talking about train depots and said, "You can put it all the way over here and connect it up with a piece of track, though I have no idea why you would do that." My only thought as a TF player is, "Why wouldn't you do that?" (Answer being because depots work differently in TF, of course.) Anyway, nice tutorial, thanks a lot!
Ya. There are a lot of similarities between the two games. I'm actually considering doing in comparison video
thanks so much for this tutorial extremely well made and easy to follow
Thanks for the brief introduction
No worries
1:31 Yeah, these certainly are some better graphics. Nothing like the flash game-esque low detail high resolution look.
They're low poly graphics, it's a great form of graphics style but it's often poorly done. I like the way it looks in this game though.
Thank you for recording with double size UI. Watched you on mobile phone.
Mobile devices account for 33% of my views so I thought it would be a good idea. Thanks for the comment
Bruh i love you i just strated playing since i downgrated and this guide is amazing
Also the fact you consider mobile viewers wow thx man
Really helpful video. Things like optional zbase (download more content thing) and double interface options to make in-game menu bigger. I came for railway signals but as you said it's in playlist so will check that out.
Thankyou master hellish you really help me 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Just found this on Steam, seems like my type of game, so exited to learn and play!
Welcome
great refresher!
Thank you! It really help me out :)
Thank you so much for this great video

Excellent tutorial thank you!

Very good video, i like the busy map that's based on Lincolnshire too with my village of Coningsby featuring
There is a lot of Lincolnshire in my series 6 challenge.
Thanks mate, really helpe at the beginning

This is a great vdeo! i liked and subbed!
Thank you
Hello and thank you very much, your guides helped me to get started with openTTD. I have a question regarding nGRFs. What combos do you like, if any?
Thanks for the help, Now I'm a pro! :D
Thanks for this!
No problem
Great tut. What diction!
that tutorial really helped me alot
Glad it helped
There is a NewGRF called OpenGFX+ BigGUI which increases the size of the top bar without doubling all the fonts and window sizes. I find this much better than using the built-in double-size option as I find it makes all the text far too big.
thanks a lot i just got it on steam
Have fun!
Great video was wondering where you found the graphics pack at? I been looking and haven't stumbled on them yet if you could post a link that would be awesome!
It's in the game. In 'Check Online Content' it's 'Base graphics zBase'
What about other public transport, like trams and trolleybuses, are they present in the game? I remember original TTD at least had the former.
Lots of trams and trolleys. When you see the d/l contents, try qoogling it. They all have a topic on the Open TTD forum. Make sure you d/l some nice tram tracks and trolley power lines.
In order to get trams, you must download the trams mod.
Thanks very helpful
Do you have a basic Let's Play of this, maybe one where you start at the earliest point of the game?
Your best bet is probably season 6.
Curious if you know why there was never an underground tube system on TT, do you think it was too difficult or they Chris Sawyer never thought about it.
Thank you so much for the tutorial sir. I wish someone would make this game available for iPad. Playing on a tiny phone screen is a bit of a hassle. Still great time killer.
Not hellish at all. Brilliant tutorial!
Master hellish comes from my world of Warcraft character it doesn't really reflects the name of all of my content but I've had it for a long time and it's kinda stuck
@@MasterHellish-Gaming I wish my nick was as dignified...
Woah! All the place names are from round here! I live two villages over from Barton-upon-Humber! It's all Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire, and North-East Lincolnshire towns and villages. I love it. Is there a pack I can download for that or did you do it yourself?
Oh I'm gonna be enjoying this set. I played this a while ago on my Linux box. Do you know what the PC requirements are? IIRC the original stuff ran on 486 class machines - I have a few retro rigs around here, would it work on them?
PC requirements are listed on the steam store page
this helped a lot
Good o
I made a game where I started in the year 0 and I realized that nothing would come out for a while.
That's when I decided to look up a tutorial cause I am used to playing Locomotion.
Yes... Not sure there were many powered forms of transport back in the year 0000. Hope you enjoy the game
but the latest update has that maintenance section. and doesnt picks up materials or passenger, like when i clicked the bus from stopped to "going to" well its not ! it said maintenance. etf
Supperb video..
Thanks...
Most asked question by new people; how to stop the music (they just opened the music); ow, you can do that in game, not in the menu.
Pro tip; to find the biggest city; you find the list with city inhabitants ;)
You can also open the music window with F12
Got this game for free on STEAM thanks for the guide
You're welcome, I'm glad it was useful
When I go into a train depot and press "new vehicles" the front cars where the driver is won't come up just the cars that come after it like passenger car, wood car, armored boxcar etc
What year are you playing in ect? mods?
Need help. Downloaded a British train and station pack naw I’ve lost all the trucks to deliver wood, steel etc. Where did I go wrong. Thanks
for the graphics part, will it lag my game because im using openttd on windows xp
Thanks for the video. I played this as a kid, but I just couldn't figure it out today. I loved making my trains destroy AI's busses :D But I guess I'll play it in a more sane and responsible way now, delivering mail etc. Sigh
No problem, you might want to come along to a viewers game . Viewers games are events where viewers get the opportunity to play OpenTTD with Hellish multiplayer games. When they are scheduled they are announced on social media (twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Tumblr, Blogger, Google+) and all my events including these are listed on my Facebook(facebook.com/MasterHellish/) and Website(masterhellish.net/events/list.events).
***** Perhaps after I get some experience. Thanks! :)
Good tutorial!
Thank you
