Borax is a laundry additive and cleaner that can be purchased in the cleaning/laundry detergent aisle of your grocery store or maybe at your local hardware store.
How to make a borax solution:
Bring a quantity of water to a boil. For every cup of boiling water add 3 heaping tablespoons of borax powder. Stir the borax powder into the water and keep stirring until the powder is dissolved (it may not all dissolve, the water will be cloudy and there still may be a bit of powder in the bottom of your container)
Transfer the solution into a suitable container large enough to hold the objects you are going to crystalize.
Tie a piece of fishing line or string to the object you want to crystalize and hang it in the solution making sure it does not touch the sides or bottom.
Allow to sit in a quiet location. You should see crystals forming after about an hour of cooling. I found that the maximum crystallization happened in the first 4-5 hours.
Pipe cleaners are perfect for this because they are fuzzy and have lots of places for the crystals to start growing on. The smoother the surface of the object the harder it will be for the crystals to start growing.
These can be used year after year as long as you store them in a dry place.
Borax is listed as a skin and eye irritant and is NOT edible.
Here is an excellent blog about borax information and safety:

If you are using a coffee filter, place it in the bottom of a shallow dish and pour enough of the solution over the top until it is completely covered. Allow to sit for 3-4 hours. Crystals will have grown over the filter and it will be stuck to the dish. Gently pry up an edge and it should come loose fairly easily. Transfer to a piece of paper towel and allow to dry.

If you subscribe any new video I make will show up in your subscription box, delivered to you like a new magazine to your door (except free). You can even go to your subscriptions section of your channel and click on "manage subscriptions" and select "email with new uploads" on my channel. This way you will get an email telling you I have a new video up if you don't go to UA-cam often.
I LOVE comments and I read each and every one of them.
I try very hard to answer questions when I can, but there is an excellent chance your question has been answered in the description box or in the comments, so please take a look.
My favourite channel here on UA-cam is CookingAndCrafting. Beth lives in Hawaii and makes great meals, desserts and crafts. We met here on UA-cam by commenting on each others videos and have since met each other several times in "real life". She is a lovely person and a great friend. Please check her out :)

Tammy these were beautiful. Nice job. Wondering if you could spray them with acrylic sealer to give them a bit more stability, hmmm might have to give it a go and see if it makes the crystals dissolve or not. Thanks for sharing another amazing idea.
Let us know how you go please! I'm curious as well :)
Hmmm.... not sure if it would dissolve them or not, if you try let me know and I 'll add the information in the description

This is so cool! Hope I can get my hands on borax here so I can try this :)
Hi, I want to make this project, and my question is. If I have to use or is essential to use glass dishes or I can use plastic or any other? I hope to have an answer, thanks.
Hello! Can you tell me how long these crystals last? Are they permanent or do they fall apart in a little while? Thanx for sharing! 😉👍😊
That is so cool. I can't wait to try it.
The seashell is beautiful!
omg I haft to make these omg this is so cool, thanks
Omg i made those last year for my scirnce fair they cane out really cool!!!

These look delicious
Do the crystals stay hard, or do the crystals melt a little bit? Are they breakable? I really want to do this! Thanks for the amazing Videos Yoyomax12!
My daughters said that it was so amazing! It's just like it disappeared! Impressive!
Oh how fun Tammy! We will be trying these! We've made the flubber before and the slime stuff with corn starch. I love doing these kinds of stuff with my son...we're easily entertained! Thank you! =}
Just wondering ... does it help you at all if I watch the ad all the way through? :-) Love the Christmas ornament ideas you have shared with us. Keep up the awesome work.
Do they crumble a lot or is Borax toxic? I only know you can kill a Leviathan with it xP But I don't think I can buy it here in Germany.. :/
This is awesome I'll try it soon
You are Amazing! Once again!
That is so cool!
Great idea!
How did u make a hole in the shell last time I tried to the shell just broke apart !
I made these in science class too!! It was so fun!! I made mine with my initial!
I remember doing this in elementary school!
Pretty! A good idea for homemade ornaments this year! Do I have to use glass containers for the Borax?
I don't think you have to use glass, but glass is easier to clean and it doesn't absorb the chemicals like plastic might (you probably shouldn't use a plastic container for anything else after using it for this purpose).
Ok…thank you!
Love them. It is smart idea 😍😍
fun idea and great science!
So just paper, borax, water and some strings to make some crystals?
Cute idea!
You have no idea how much I wish these were edible :P Like made of sugar crystals or something like that :)
Love it!
Love it

Can u spray these with polyurethane to hold on the crystals and may be reusable next year?
I did a similar craft project in school, but they are just too tempting to lick for me to do as an adult.
Where did you get those goose measuring cups!!!
Just wondering can I do the experiment by using the plastic container?
Awesome!
Can you add essential oil to it for it to snow pretty?
