Why Is Xzibit So Underrated? Pimp My Ride? Stunted Growth Music

- Never no superstar, save that for Michael Jackson. A line from Xzibit on his debut single paparazzi, that speaks volumes looking back at his career. If there ever was an artist that skipped mainstream to go straight Hollywood it was MJ himself, but eventually Xzibit would follow suit swerving into the television lane with multiple t.v shows and movies, none bigger than his work as the host of the MTV show Pimp my ride, that he’s become most known for by the mainstream public. A show many fans aware of his music journey believe hurt his rap career in the long run. Xzibit rose to rap fame first working with rapper and producer King Tee and the alcoholics, before linking with Dr Dre and rappers like Snoop Dogg and Eminem that elevated his star power to another level. Xzibit has always had a unique voice for hip hop, and fit seamlessly into the gangsta rap era of the 90s, with the crossover appeal to also become his most popular rap self in the new millennium. Evident by his first platinum album in the year 2000 followed by two gold albums at his peak from 00 through 04. Thereafter Xzibit seemed to seek Hollywood and television success and became just as prolific in that space as being a rapper, some say even more. Either way Xzibit has not only been a successful rapper, achieving platinum and gold statuses most rappers can’t say the same for themselves, but a standout when you think of west coast hip hop back in the 90s. Yet his legacy always seems to fly under the radar, underground fans remembering him from his debut album “At the speed of light” released in 1996. Why Is Xzibit So Underrated? Pimp My Ride? Still one of the best rap voices in history. Underrated lyricist too
BRO I TOLD YOU REDMAN AND METHOD MAN AS A GROUP THEY ARE GOATS SOLO AND TOGETHER THEY DID NOTHING
It was as you said it was. Pimp my Ride stunted him. That show has become a part of pop culture. It was a household name at the time. This is the same assessment as Snoop has as well. He is so much of a household name that people can't buy into his albums anymore.
Honestly, he is one of the best in general. I'm glad he has so much shine in the 1990s and 2000s. It was well deserved for him.
Tha Alkaholiks #StuntedGrowthMusic 🎧🎤🔥 #NextUp
Xzibit's appearance on Snoop's B Please was iconic and set him up for mainstream breakthrough.
That was my song!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Xzibit is just that dude that was cool with everybody. He could hang in any lane.
Criminally underrated. 😊
Do slim thug
Lyrically underrated! “what you see is what you get” is hard hitting and the video was dope af. At the speed of life and 40 days & 40 nights were dope projects where you could see his lyrical skill and they’re dope projects to smoke to. The features he did with Alkoholiks were always fire 🔥. It sucks when I tell people “Xzibit is dope af at rapping” the response is always, “the pimp my ride dude raps?”
That's how big he became with that show. It completely overshadowed his place in hip hop. Some people forgot how big that show was at the time. It had reached pop culture status. If you weren't a hip hop head, you weren't going to know who he was by the time that show gotten big
My hardcore mentor on the mic! Xzibit was too real for the mainstream. God bless this brotha ✊🏾
Eazy e is the best to me but x to tha z is definitely top 4 hardcore with Redman & dmx
@@rockfresh5359 Yeah but then again Easy didn't write his own material.
BRO I TOLD YOU REDMAN AND METHOD MAN AS A GROUP THEY ARE GOATS SOLO AND TOGETHER THEY DID NOTHING
@@manystylesrecordsI agree, Redman and Method man are the best in general too.
Xzibit definitely had shine in the 1990s and 2000s. You can tell once he dabbled in the film industry he definitely wanted to take that route more than music to an extent.
"Never no superstar, I'm more like a planet". -Xzibit on "Paparazzi"
That’s one of my favorite tracks ever but i hâte that line so much, it doesn’t make sense at all
@@inigo9000 it does in a interstellar way lol
@@MastaInferno how? :p
@@inigo9000 The Phrase he is Using is a metaphor that compares celebrities to stars, where 'I'm more like a planet' suggests being larger or more influential. Also, Planets ate bigger than stars in constellation by nature, This extends to the next line, highlighting the challenge of maintaining composure despite obstacles, akin to a planet navigating through space. Hopefully, that clarifies!
@@MastaInferno yes that’s exactly what i thought the intend of that line was, my knowledge about space unfortunaly less than basic but i do know that a planet is much smaller and only secondary to a star. They orbit around a star and are only left over material from a star it’s formation, mostly rock that can only reflect the star it’s energy and light when a star produces it.
His first 3 albums are massive classics
Let's keep it goin SGM with one about THA ALKAHOLIKS!!!!!
That show ruined his career he had some hits
I honestly don't think it ruined his career, regardless of people finding out about his actual personality. But I think lyrical rap started to die down by the late 2000s and he was still releasing that, which is the best route to take in the long run.
Super underrated I had to buy his album like 3-4 times from ppl stealing/scratching it and I didn't even care lol.
When I first heard him on "Paparazzi" I was a fan of his music. "Get yo walk on".
Those were my two faves
Hella underrated. Another great feature. Gotta do King Tee and/or the Alkaholiks next!
XZIBIT is a monster. He had ALOT of hits wit DRE that's immortal. He needs his credit.
Xzibit is kinda like a west coast Method Man. He had the star appeal even though there were nicer people in his circle. If he had joined Aftermath he probably would have had the Game's career. As a matter of fact I think the Game took his spot with Dre.
Bro, I forgot ALL about X. He had some hits 99-03 but I had no idea he did a joint with Mobb. I had to circle back and check the song, I wish he would've collaborated more with the East Coast sound though.
Eyes May Shine Remix.
My wife surprised me for 23'd b-day in 2000 August, and took me to the Up In Smoke tour. I've been rockin with Xzibit since and before then, best time and tour ever...
Xzibit lyrically I'd put him on a track with anyone he'd hold his own and or outshine them. His verse on Bitch Please and What's the Difference proves how phenomenal he is as a lyricist. Pimp My Ride didn't hurt him he actually has a great personality unlike most rappers who can't even form a complete sentence. I have nothing but respect and love for X to the Z!!
More of a Likwit Crew X fan than a Aftermath X fan; do agree he's been underrated his whole career
His first four albums still hold up. And the Serial Killers shit is some of the best hip hop of the last decade.
Xzibit career is kind of like Common. The only difference is Common was able to continue to shine on both music & the TV/movie entertainment platform. Still I have much love and respect for Xzibit’s body of work.
I didn’t know about the connection to Detroit…now I see why him & Eminem became friends ..he even had a role in the “ 8 Mile” movie…I never understood why he didn’t sign to Aftermath/ Interscope…no mention of Strong Arm Steady…his protégés…that he claimed as his crew after the Likwidation Crew kind of went their separate ways…Strong Arm Steady was definitely underground but he tried to give them access to a mainstream audience…record sales didn’t benefit artists unless you sold more than 500 thousand copies worldwide on a major label…Xzibit had a great run as a artist …more than 5 years and transitioned into TV and movies…but now he is also a mogul in the Cannabis industry !
Have to disagree on one point: X to the Z may have switched up his subject matter a tad over the course of his career, but he never changed his flow. And his musical accomplishments always exceeded the extracurricular stuff to me...
One of my favorite rappers. Xzibit is in my top 10 personally.
That was a dope stunted growth my friend. 47 years old and never heard that song eyes may shine. Pause your video and took a listen to it. That was straight fire. Respect from CT
Tha Alkaholiks #StuntedGrowthMusic 🎧🎤🔥🍺
right
If you're going from the perspective of underrated musically do E-40, Bone Thugs, Tech N9ne, Twista,
💯
My best friend but me on to X to da Z in middle school when I 1st heard "What You See Is What You Get". I went back and loved "At The Speed of Life". "Front 2 Back" was our track team's anthem in high school. In that era anything with a X feature I was on it. I was all over anything he did and following him put me on to Tha Liks and Strong Arm Steady.
Been rocking with Xzibit since at the speed of light. Picked up every album and they all had something to offer. Paparazzi and Foundation where my favorites on that first project.
I requested this one. I'd say try Cormega, because he's underrated
I suggested Cormega in the Nature video. Fans objected by saying he’s one of most decorated independent artists.
@therealmarlonbellamy just seeing thus. Nah Cormega has to be one. Kool Keith also
@@EmilesCreations I agree.
40 Dayz & 40 Nightz is my favorite album from him.
at the speed of life is one of my favourite album and song ever
Always liked his flow and I remember telling my friend how he was gonna BLOW UP!!!!! That tv show definitely sank career!!!
Do Lost boyz and tha alkaholiks
Pimp my ride stalled his momentum and showed a friendly side that I think actually damaged his credibilty (which at the time was way more important than it is now). When he went back to music it always felt like he was distracted..
Restless is one of my all time favorite albums. It was a classic. X is very underrated as a lyricist.
40 days 40 nights is a top ten hip hop album in my opinion, still gets played at least twice or more every year
You Should do Herb McGruff or John Forte next. I not sure if you have already covered either of them yet.
At the Speed of Life was phenomenal!!
This is the one that i’ve been waiting for thank you so much. You should do Warren G next.
Warren G? How's that?
@@leyenda6149 He doesn’t get talked about enough when it comes to West Coast artists. He’s overshadowed by Ice Cube, Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg.
Warren G is another one I want to see get more shine again. He is one of the best in general in hip hop.
@@CB12345 My wife & i saw him live in concert for our anniversary.
I love him he don't get the props at all Xzibit cold rapper
Love your content👌...do Tracey Lee, please.
Much love from Germany
Great video!
Gravediggaz next?
Good one! Do Cool breeze from Dungeon family East Point.Greatest hit was a classic album Nobody talks about.
Tha Loud Records days 🔥 Xzibit don’t get much credit from his dope albums having a best album in 1998, 2000 was a big year working with Dr.Dre
X will always be that dude 💯!
Pimp my ride took his mystique away as an MC.
Who want what Who wanna get rolled up? I spit venom in every direction, soak some up. Xzibit always been dope
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Did you make a Pharoahe Monch one? He's one of the best to ever do it 🙏
X to the Z can rap rap !
Xzibit one of Detroits greats
What you see is what you get video dope
More money is made in film and tv than music anyway. Look @ Ice-T. If anything; his growth has transitioned
How he underrated he had his time the late 90s to the mid 2000's
I agree, but I think he means when it comes to hip hop conversations Xzibit rarely gets brought up. Even though he had a lot of hits and great sales in his music career.
Only Rapper from New Mexico to go hard.
Big xizibit fan
X-Zibit was like the original Curren$y.
That, I actually can see. Especially since Xzibit is into cars a lot like Curren$y.
I'm scheduled to do a songwith him soon
Yo, rock hard fam. XZ is a BEAST🤘🏿🔥
@@RohgishSun For sure fa sho! Thank you!
Ex used to be one of my favorite rappers my dads from the west coast and I looks just like ex but my pops got locked up on trafficking charges I guess I just liked him because he reminded me of my pops
i would love to see u do montana of 300 but u probably don't know who that is since he's not mainstream.
I thought Xzbit sound would be more akin to 2pac's sound. West coast gangsta rap was big in the mid 90s. By 2000, Rap was more fun and club oriented but still had a gangsta edge.
NO XZIBIT SLANDER!! 😂. That Pimp My Ride bullshit shouldnt have been his so called “legacy”…he was MERELY a host…shafted by shitty MTV contracts. X was one of my favorite emcees for YEARS. “At the Speed of Life”….”40 Dayz n 40 Nightz”….”Restless”….CLASSIC works.
🎵 Chamber music 🎶 is a banger still
Well damn, this video had sneaked up on me like a thief in the night
*snuck* ✌🏻
I'm glad Xzibit is getting more shine again.
Snoop was a household name since the first Chrinic
You mean Chronic.
What do you mean, underrated? He was massive in the early-mid 2000s. He was still touring and selling out venues around the world well into the 2000s.
He benefited heavily from working with Dre n idk why he stopped. Restless his best album to me. I feel like he could’ve kept tht going he was around the right ppl.
The story about Suge pressing him about Dre may give reason to him not working with Dre more…
@@ItsDJNoName damn never heard tht story. What happened?
@@freezhollywood Apparently, Suge pressed Xzibit at a club asking him about his allegiance to Dre and X said "I just work with him". This was around 2001 if i remember correctly.
@@ItsDJNoName lol damn. Thts one thing Dre couldn’t provide for his artists is protection. Many guys got robbed n walked down for being Dre affiliated. And he did nothin about it. Just stay a hermit outta fear.
@@freezhollywood Dre was never the gangster & he'll even say it. His biggest mistake was letting Suge even get a foot in the door with Death Row.
Do JT Money/ Poison Clan next
Do Robb Bank$ next
did you do the Young Bloodz yet
K Rino, Havoc, and DJ Clue
This was super short
Im straight on that west coast rap.
Mr x to z
X TO DA Z
Him and Compton Menace are Larry Holmes long lost sons, j/s...lol
Do 2 pistols next
That is a name I haven't heard about since 2010. Honestly, that would be a great throwback .
@@CB12345 I see you have a rhd in your profile pic
Do stunted growth for CHAMILLIONAIRE…HIS STYLE CHANGED SO BAD….
Xzibit has been in my Top 10 since I heard his Album 40 dayz and 40 nights in 98. Xzibit wasn't always underated its just that PMR made him look like a cornball. Which is why I never really watched that scripted azz show
BRO I TOLD YOU REDMAN AND METHOD MAN AS A GROUP THEY ARE GOATS SOLO AND TOGETHER THEY DID NOTHING
Red and Meth are more known as solo artists
Xzibit’s name is Alvin 🤣
What’s wrong with that???
Anyone who really knows real "street dudes" knows most of them are funny and goofy.. having that permanent stereotypical snarl and "tough guy" persona is only what people who don't be in the street think black "street dudes" act like, like that British dude from "The Cloned Tyrone" .. he obviously spent NO time in the hood to be acting like that
Let's be honest, that is only a small number of them who are actually funny and goofy, not the majority of them. In reality they do have a tough guy persona and unapproachable look to them. Plus, many of them do end up going to prison, locked up, hooked on drugs, too many kids all over the place, and end up being losers as adults. Many of them end up never leaving the hood either and go through more legal troubles than anyone I personally know and anyone else I meet say the same things. Many black people witness this and experience this everyday. I get the point of your statement, but not that realistic like people think.
@@CB12345 question... are u white? Did u grow up in the hood? Or were u just watching Menace II Society, and rap videos, from the outside looking in?
XZIBIT SAYS DIDDY TOOK HIM TO A GAY CLUB
2009!
Xzibit > Boring Kendrick Lamar 🤷♀️
Front 2 Back n Hey Now are the two songs from him i had to keep on a playlist. Xzibit is cool, not a big fan clearly.
TBH, I've always thought he wasn't very good. Plus his limited vocal range limited intonation that is so important in lyrical delivery. His bars never made me wanna do anything. Never moved me
1st Snoop Dogg was Already the Biggest Rapper at the time. PAC was gone their still no em or 50 and Jay was barley beginning. 2nd 🤦🏽 gentiles using stunt completely wrong
Say whatcha want, but u watched pmr n his videos.. that restless album my fav tho.
Do South Park Mexican
