After watching you guys these last few months, my impression is that Chris and Jeff are true collectors, Ty falls in the middle tire, Scott and Phil are speculators. Love the show none the less!
First off , I think many people are true collectors. But you also have dealers and investors etc. I rarely sell anything. I have over 800 sealed wax boxes and over 50,000 single cards I'd estimate. But unlike most of the hobby, I now no longer grade anything. I want raw cards for my Kobe Bryant binder and I also love Nolan Ryan vintage cards. If no one was ever willing to sell cards, collectors wouldn't be able to acquire them. So we all need to understand basically we all need each other in the hobby. I am actually planning to gather up some cards now to sell to help the victims of the terrible wildfires in Los Angeles and Pasadena areas. We have had many fires up here in Northern California in the last 10 years. The Camp Fire killed many. I really hope the Santa Ana winds can just settle down a bit so these fires can get under control. The firefighters need to be commended greatly for what they're doing. Thanks for sharing!
Sounds like an amazing collection! It’s crazy and scary here in SoCal. These goddamn winds just will not calm down long enough. Thanks for thinking of us down here.
Before listening - the answer should be that if you already have a profit in the sealed wax, it's sell sell sell. The price will crater once the Skenes debut patch hits.
I purchased 2 chrome update hobby boxes from Topps at $199 per when they were released; I sold one for $350 about a month ago, and kept the other up until a week ago when I finally caved and ripped it. I ended up with 3 various Skenes that are valued at about $50 total and not much else, there was *maybe* $75 in value for the entire box. I should have sold.
Also, I have no confidence that Skenes hasn’t been pulled if it’s been released. If I pulled it, I’m 100% buying as much wax as I could and holding it until the season starts…..flip the wax and then announce the pull
I've been a card collector for 40 years. I've only sold 5 cards in my lifetime (around 2019). I have given away a lot of cards to other UA-camrs. I have a fear of FOMO. I would sell more but I have a fear of those cards going up in price and I sold them. My collecting is everywhere.
First off, what is Webster's definition of a "True Collector" last I checked, you spend money on cardboard of YOUR choosing, once acquired...it's up to you. I for one consider myself an A-Rod "Collector" and have no shame in blowing my pension from 22 years in the military on cards with the face of a PED user. My secondary collection is that of a J-Rod "My last name is Rodriguez too!) and yes. from time to time I will find myself taking cards out of my collection just to put towards cards I want in the collection. If it's wrong to invest PC cards into cards I want to add into the PC...then I don't want to be right! So for those who are quick to place labels on individual habits may want to look in a mirror and ask themselves "What is my desire in this hobby" and if you cannot respond to that question honestly with yourself then your feedback of others collecting habits needs to be kept to yourself...Just saying.
I think it's funny we all do things that are consistently a money suck/loss and don't blink (Coffee, eating out, streaming services, drinking, smoking, and ON ON). I wish everyone would take a breath and go into with the Movie Theatre mentality aka ENTERTAINMENT VALUE. Going to over pay for a movie(that will come out cheaper later), snacks, and drink to have a good time.
Chris here - that's exactly how I feel ripping a box or two of Stadium Club or Stadium Club Chrome. But when the box prices reaches $400+, well, it's hard to compare it to a movie. Now it's an anniversary dinner at Morton's. And that only happens once a year.
Scott you have every right to buy whatever card you want for what ever reason. We all share the same right. That’s why it is called a market. In a market you have investors, speculators and collectors. Even collectors have some monetary motivation. Every one has a price. As always thank you for the great content.
I never understood this topic that's been getting thrown around UA-cam over the years. Who's a "True Collector" and who's not. Every single person who gets into sports cards sells cards/trades up at some point in their lives. Whether it's short term, long term or to hold onto for relatives for a financial future for them. There's always a financial reason behind the purchase. Whether the player is "proven" already or this guy has potential. Whether this guy is a Hall of Famer or a prospect. Whatever it may be every single person does it. Just because someone does it on a much smaller scale or bigger scale than others, it doesn't make them any better or less of a "True" collector than the other. I think and this is just my opinion. If someone is enjoying themselves to the fullest on acquiring cards... which by the way is collecting. Then you're about as true of a collector as anyone else. It shouldn't matter what they do with their cards. That's the entire point of starting a hobby up and collecting things. It's to have fun. When did there suddenly be a threshold that we need to keep behind so we can be just as good of a collector as everyone else. I've heard the argument that flippers and all these investor guys are what's ruining the hobby and driving up prices. Look at the world. It's not just sports cards that have gone insane financially. Everything has. Welcome to the world we live in now. Collectors don't have to agree with the individual's way of collecting but it doesn't make them any less than you're. By the way this isn't really directed at you guys. I"m just giving my two cents on the topic.

Chris here - honestly thats what its all about! Find soemthing in the hobby you enjoy and that fires you up! Sounds like you found it and that's fantastic!
Being a "true" collector is buying and never letting it go. Which is not most people. We all have to make choices. For example, I would one day love to turn my Walter Payton RC PSA 8 into a 9, or 10, but to make that happen I will most likely have to sell other cards to bridge the financial gap. It doesn't make me a flipper. It just means I have a budget.
Jeff's halloween village collector jab was hilarious and speaks to the heart of the OG "true collector" definition. As you guys said, only 1% of folks fit the old school "true collector" profile and that's okay. 99% of people involved in the hobby want to acquire the best cards at the cheapest price possible and sell them at the highest price possible. "True Collector" and "PC" are just negotiating tactics.
Remember when there was that $1m bounty for the Connor Bedard 1 of 1 which has not yet been pulled? He was supposed to be a generational talent and has had an okay second season but his prices and the prices of those series 2 boxes have tanked. The lesson here? The Skenes hype is real right now but if he doesn’t live up to this almost unfairly high expectations in his second season or gets hurt, those Topps chrome update boxes will plummet regardless if his debut patch has been pulled.
So because i sold a couple Jordan refractors to help fund the purchase of a Jordan rookie i want more. But became i dont have unlimited funds im not a collector? Got it, thanks... Thats the stupidest thing Ive ever heard lol
It's just a huge huge risk. Right? I mean, you have to accept that 99% of those boxes will not return anything even close to $700. It's a lottery ticket. Far more likely to have $30 worth of cards than several hundred or more. But like the lottery used to say: "Hey, you never know."
Love the streams, guys! What if someone already pulled the Skenes/Merrill Debut Patch? And he's only holding back to sell his own Chrome boxes for those crazy prices? Ty
There is no such thing as a "true collector" because we all collect differently. I personally would prefer to a 1967 Yaz showing his MVP and triple crown year, than a 2020s chrome refractor that costs more than the 1967. It makes no sense to me, but that doesn't make me right and others wrong. To me, having a card from when the player was at his peak is very important yet others couldn't care less.
Sell Chrome Update before spring training. The upside is already baked in and the odds of Skenes getting hurt or underperforming are much higher than the latter.
There is one player I collect that I don’t care about the value of his cards. . I probably have the world’s largest Nick Madrigal collection and I don’t care that 95% of them wouldn’t sell at a 99 cent eBay auction. I had a long conversation with him a few years ago, and I root for a small guy like him with a different skill set. Those cards will NEVER maintain or hold value, but I don’t care. i dont know about a real collector or a true collector but i would definitely say i am a pure collector. i would pick up side jobs or put in the overtime if i want another card. selling is never the first through 10th option.
If you have a collection of something that you are actively adding to, then I'd say you're a collector. Only a gatekeeper throws around terms like "true collector." No one likes a gatekeeper. "True Collector" no don't agree. A "super collector" or one who only collects and never looks to sell, sure thing. Scott I think you let them get under your skin a little to much on that statement. Just collect what you like and who you wanna have in your pc! Topps Chrome sell, sell, sell.
The problem is cards are being pulled at a dramatic rate. Breakers make every card available for everyone within weeks of a products release. No one should have complete rainbows of a card that came out in 2022. But here we are. And most of the time it’s well off people just buying these cards. Not the collector who buys packs once a week/month.
@@nicksunfortune5718 For sure print runs are massive problem. Players have thousands and thousands of rookie cards. Not many will hold value log term. It's up to us to determine which ones are worth trying to get. And yeah, 1190 of those 1200 1/1's are probably worthless.
Why would u sell? Unless u have a whole bunch of this sitting around, I'd rip it. I can see if u are only trying to make a few bucks, then whatever. Sure u could open some up and get a bunch of crap but the chase is the whole reason for buying baseball cards. I don't have a lot of money but that's not why I buy
When it's all said and done, if someone wants to keep every card they ever made or sell them to get others they want to keep, then that's fine. What gets me, however are those who buy a box only to hide it away forever or forget about it. Why buy it to not open or sell? Taking that away from someone who would enjoy it is wrong to me.
I think it’s pieces of cardboard at the end of the day. If we weren’t motivated by money attached to this hobby, we probably wouldn’t do this at all. It’s why we care about Topps over non-liscensed rare panini. Still pictures of your favorite players. Let’s not act like this isn’t an investment. Haha
Chris here - to be fair to my fellow spitballers, the odds are like 99% that your box will not return anything close to it's seal value when opened. So I get it. Nobody wants to set $500 on fire.
Scott here-I absolutely would not rip it. I would rather spend the money on cool singles of Larry Walker, Paul Goldschmidt, and other players I collect. Modern wax is such a bad return, that I have a hard time opening it vs just buying cards I care about.
Chris here - I was referring to the base cards in update. We get duplicate rookies of Chourio, Holliday, and Merrill (already in the base chrome set) and Rookie debuts, but really the only new rookie in the base set that's exciting is Skenes. No offense to any Colt Keith or Joey Loperfido fans, but their cards aren't driving any sales.
I stumbled across 14 Chrome Update Megas across 4 different Barnes and Nobles. I weighed all of them, kept the heaviest one for my sealed collection, sold the remaining 13 @ $80 ea. So hard to not open it, but holding strong. If I move it, would only be for a heavier box.

Holding for another 5 years wouldn’t be the worst idea. Depends on your health a little.
2018 Update is a different animal. I agree with Philmington
2018 is the best wax! Hold if you can, but maybe have a contingency plan.
chris im a true collector,i have a 1/1topps a & g 2014 of freddie freeman ,from a hobby box value ???
You pulled it from a box?? incredible! Congrats. Is it the wood mini?
"True Collector" no don't agree. A "super collector" or one who only collects and never looks to sell, sure thing. Scott I think you let them get under your skin a little to much on that statement. Just collect what you like and who you wanna have in your pc! Topps Chrome sell, sell, sell.
Well said!!
Agreed!
Chris here - I’ll be honest, that’s one aspect of the rampant breaking that I really like. Access to more cards!!
@ it’s heightened printruns. Now every player has 1200 RC 1/1s glad you like it.
@@nicksunfortune5718 For sure print runs are massive problem. Players have thousands and thousands of rookie cards. Not many will hold value log term. It's up to us to determine which ones are worth trying to get. And yeah, 1190 of those 1200 1/1's are probably worthless.
Well done
Kyle Tucker 🤫
Its crazy how little the hobby in general cares about his cards!
Gatekeepers gonna gatekeep in whatever way they can. The hobby needs all kinds to flourish. That said, I’ll cut ya if ya grab an AJ I need! 😂
hahaha! Chris here - none of us will risk standing between you and your ASSman!
You could make a similar argument for someone who buys 2 slabs of an identical card and tucks them away for 10 years to speculate on their value
Nothing “ethical” about collecting. It’s a hobby
Sell it all...
Probably the smartest thing to do
I think it’s pieces of cardboard at the end of the day. If we weren’t motivated by money attached to this hobby, we probably wouldn’t do this at all. It’s why we care about Topps over non-liscensed rare panini. Still pictures of your favorite players. Let’s not act like this isn’t an investment. Haha
worst product of the year goes to topps definitive 2024
Chris here - I;ve seen some images and ebay listings and these cards do NOT look good. Have you opened any?
Saying that you wouldn't rip Topps Chrome Update shows whos the "True" Collectors.
@@SpitballinCards Your probably right, im just jaded because I hit a Debut patch on my 2nd box and now i think every box i have saved has 1 in it.
The card addict dude said there's 'just Paul Skenes' as pretty much the only good rookie in the set?? Really? Does this guy even collect cards, lol. 😂
If I move it, would only be for a heavier box.
there is so much about this that i really hate but what i eat dont make you shit
@forpetesake20 what do you hate?
@@bulldozer_cards55 all of it
All great points @Spitballin Crew! @ScottieBCards your a collector my guy! Don't listen to the basement trolls that are jelly they don't have the card or cards u pick up! None of them took part in writing the "Hobby Constitution " or better yet the "Hobby Bible" ! I'm a collector first but also a dealer second! I truly believe 75% of the hobby flips cards to move in and out of other stuff to by something new.... if they don't there's something wrong with them 😉🤣😂 But @philmington hit it on the head! I couldn't have said it better myself, and I'm one of those collectors he talks to at "the shows"...
💪🏼😉👊🏼💯
Whatchoo talkin bout baseballcardaddict
Jeff here: excellent callback! 🤣
hahahahaha - well played!!
