For those unaware, snagging fish is regarded as unsportsmanlike since you’re just ripping a hook through the water and hooking the fish anywhere on the body, it’s illegal when fishing for fish like bass and trout. It’s much easier to snag a fish than to get it to bite your lure. It’s also considered unsportsmanlike and illegal in some states to catch bass off of beds where they lay eggs. Yes he still caught them but did it the wrong way.

For the non fishermen a "bed" is a "spawning bed". Male bass sweep their tails to clear mud off of the lake bottom to make a spawning bed where the female lays eggs. This creates a bright white 2 foot wide circle on the bottom that the male will guard until they're done spawning. The brightness of the bed makes it very easy to see the bass from distance and the male will literally stay directly over the bed to guard it from predators.
So the guy is snagging vulnerable fish that are easy to see and that will literally stay in the exact same spot. It's extremely lazy, scummy, and most importantly illegal. If you want to catch a spawning bass legally it's extremely easy. If you cast a leech or salamander bait onto the bed the bass will pick it up with their mouth to protect their eggs. A lot of fishermen view catching spawning bass as a pretty scummy thing to do even when it's technically legal, so taking it to an even worse level by snagging is extremely scummy.
Edit: in a lot of northern states like mine bass fishing is closed for a set time during the spring while bass spawn to keep the population up. In most states and particularly southern states bass season doesn't close because they have much stronger populations in warmer water. This effects regional attitudes towards catching spawning largemouth. It has pretty much no stigma in states like Texas or Florida, but is much more likely to be viewed negatively in states like Wisconsin or Minnesota (especially if it's a small lake). Snagging gamefish is almost always illegal.

@@richardlapree2250 Yes, that and how easy they are to catch is why some fishermen see it as scummy. In this story they were having a tournament while some bass were still spawning. Anyone in the tournament would be an idiot not to catch them because they were still spawning.
