    Everytime I visit Amsterdam, I am amazed that I'm not seeing ambulances speeding by every minute. The chaos caused by (mostly) tourists on bicycles is worrying. It's like they NEVER cycled before in their entire lives, and then decide that it will be a neat idea to step on one and try to drive throught the most hectic city of the Netherlands. High or not, it is a dumb idea.

    • @AhsimNreiziev
      @AhsimNreiziev 6 років тому +51

      As a resident of Amsterdam myself, I can hereby vouch for the fact that we are just as bad, if not worse, than the tourists. Basically we think _"Well, I know the city like the back of my hand, so what could possibly go wrong? And besides, I"m an 'Amsterdammer' and I'm in Amsterdam, so if I am automatically in the right. Especially on my bicycle. So if anything does go wrong, it's automatically the other person's fault anyway."_ This is a..... somewhat shaky argument, of course.....
      But hey, don't come between a person from Amsterdam and their superiority complex! Most of us are very attached to ours -- admittedly, myself at least partially included.

      But you know, I live in the Netherlands and walking in Amsterdam is already kind of difficult, so cycling must be a disaster. I´m glad I don´t live there because sometimes I´m having trouble cycling trough the city in which I live, which is dead comparing to Amsterdam.

    Pay attention. Really. This is important.
    They WILL kill you. If you're on a bike path, you're fair game. Also, when in Amsterdam it's very tempting to walk down the middle of a street that has iron rails... do NOT do this. That's the light rail line. It's quiet, and can sneak up on you. More than once my friend has had to pull me out of the way of a train or bike.
    And do not assume that because there is snow on the ground, or a storm, or after dark, that you're safe. The Dutch ride in all weathers.

      If you are an adult, you know what "it" said. If you are in your puberty, you know what "it" said because you wanted so badly to hear someone say it. If you are in elementary school, you know what "it" said because you have heard it from your or your friend's parents and someone explained to you the meaning of the f-words. If you are a toddler, you should't be on youtube anyways. I don't think anyone's freedom of information was harmed by censoring cursing, it only promotes the idea that such vocabulary is not widely appreciated.

    Tourist guide books have been VERY slow to add tips to "stay off the bike paths, they are NOT sidewalks!"
    Easily identifiable by their garnet color and signs like "fietspad".
    Another great tip, when in very busy areas, "cross with the Dutch". I think I head or read that at the comedy club Boom Chicago.
    They know when and where it's safe to cross so you can't go wrong crossing with groups.
    My personal tip is to listen for their squeaky bikes approaching from behind you.
    Since their bikes spend a lot of time outdoors in their frequently rainy weather, most of them squeak! : )

    Rule #1 to survive the Dutch: avoid Amsterdam like the plague.

    • @canuzzi
      @canuzzi 3 роки тому

      Well - yeah terrible overtourism - we have that in Austia too - luckely in Vienna it disperse a lot as we have so many spreaded out tourist attraction, while in Amsterdam it's concentrated basically into the inner city district (and no cruise ships - well no ocean going - we have danube cruise ships - but they are harmless). But some smaller locations in Austria - especially Hallstadt - it is a nightmare. Some people even walk into peoples houses and gardens univited because it is so overtourismed that they think it is a amusement park - that China build a complete replica of the ciy doesn't help the matter - it makes it worse. I still love Amsterdam so. Had greate times there, but was shocked when I come back there two years ago by the overtourism.

  • @BlueUncia
    @BlueUncia 8 років тому +3

    It's funny, and for the bigger cities at least it's pretty accurate. Go to smaller towns, and it's nowhere near as bad.
    My survival tip is always keep your head on a swivel.
    Crossing the road? Look behind you.
    Making a turn? Look behind you.
    Etc.
    One thing, though: Cyclists sometimes think the side-walk is part of the bike lane, or ignore no-cycling zones (which surprisingly do exist). That's a pet peeve of mine. I once nearly got run over by an oncoming cyclist while on a side-walk. I moved left to avoid him, he moved left to avoid me. One near-miss later, and he helpfully tells me it was my fault of course. Apparently I should have just stoically kept moving forward. Funnily enough, doing exactly that managed to almost get me run over on a different occasion, so excuse me for being a little confused there, bud!
    *Get off my side-walk.* :P

    Rules: 1. Like 'car roads' bike roads have 2 lanes. It's a usual rule to bike with 2 next to each other (exceptions include big empty roads really small ones) So make sure to not get more than 3 next to each other while biking
    2. Purple/pinkish color means Bike path. In crowded cities or towns. It can be really crowded so watch out and cross when it's safe
    3. Dutch people don't tend to use bike helmets because they are used to biking and are commonly very skilled at it
    4 Police will hold you up if you don't turn on lights when it's dark.
    5. Its considered rude to not let people pass if they are faster, especially when in a group
    6. people can get angry if you don't hurry up when the light's green. So please don't hesitate or wait 3 seconds just go already :s
    Hope this helped any questions are welcome

    Reason #1 why tourists on bikes are dangerous in Amsterdam is that they are not confident enough to drive a bicycle. They don't know what to do and are overwhelmed most of the time so they make stupid decisions. Same goes for tourist pedestrians. They don't know where to go and almost unconsciously step into the bike path. It is not that they are stupid but they are simply overloaded by the hectic life in Amsterdam.

    I visited there it was GREAT! Rode bikes to bars and restaurants, rode EVERYWHERE and saw awesome fit female scenery. Even 80+ year old couples traveling on packed bikeways together. Everybody looks so healthy and fit. The sidewalks are shared by pedestrians, bicycles, and even small cc motor bikes. Cars also park on some paths. It all seemed to work quite well. But it NEVER would work in Los Angeles or So. California because the thinking and common sense ends when you land here.

      Every dutch motorist (and pedestrian) primarily is a born and raised cyclist, many can not even exactly remember their first bike ride. That makes a huge difference in traffic.
      You'll need comfortable and safe infrastructure for generations to grow up like that, but it works. Not so sure about mixing pedestrians and bikes, though.

      I lived in New Braunfels, Texas, for a few months and have no license. But there were some bike-paths there, including one to the nearby town of Grüne (German for green so that's how they pronounce it) with a historic dancehall that still has live music most nights. So that was cool. Pedestrians are worse of mostly though. Hardly any sidewalks.

    I adapted quickly. I think of bicycle lanes in NL as German Autobahns. You can use them as long as you don't bother others. If you do have to be slow, keep right and leave space as to not hinder the ones who are in a rush! When possible adapt to traffic conditions.

    For all those complaining foreigners: Watch the videos of Just Not Bikes! You'll see The Netherlands to be the best country for bicycles, but also a good country for car drivers ... We just combined the best of both. And yes, as a pedestrian you are responsible to look out when you cross a bike-lane, the same as when you cross a car-lane! I mean, look around and you'll see elderly people on bikes, on busy bike-lanes and they manage perfectly. If they can do so, so can you! Even if you "colide" with another cyclist, you're probably both shocked but you continue your way ... Try that running into a car. O and take a look at this one: ua-cam.com/video/pqQSwQLDIK8/v-deo.html

    As a full time professional Dutchie, foreigners, please take note of this advice. If you dont ride a bike in your own country, or very rarely, or are simply not good at it, grab a taxi. Do. Not. Ride. A. Bike. Also, if an Amsterdammer says kanker, thats just their normal way of saying hello. That’s sarcasm for all US people here.
