  • Donald Lambie is the head of the School in the UK. This lecture was given in Melbourne in July 2017.
Patanjali's yoga states that yoga is the restraint of the movements of the mind. When this happens then one abides in one's true nature, full of bliss and light. In the School students practise mantra meditation to bring the mind and heart to stillness, and to abide in our true nature. In essence yoga is not physical; it's to do with our state of being.
Patanjali sets out four dispositions, or emotional attitudes, which are conducive to yoga. They are: friendliness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. They all make the quiescence of the mind easy and natural. Then it's possible to meditate easily and experience one's real nature. When we then go about our lives, do our jobs etc, we can take a little touch of that sweetness. This is the first practical aspect of the philosophy in the School - meditation.
The second element is knowledge of the true nature of ourselves. We earn our living with worldly knowledge, of all sorts. But the true knowledge of ourselves is different. From the Upanishad: the real nature of our self is complete, full, total, perfect. In Sanskrit the word is 'purna'. But we don't always experience ourselves in this way! So we may be often trying to fulfil the feeling of incompleteness. But we can instead experience that pre-existing completeness. This needs practice, hence practical philosophy.
The School of Philosophy and Economic Science offers courses in practical philosophy and economics with justice as well as other subjects. It aims to approach philosophy in a practical way, encouraging students to apply philosophy in their lives. The School also introduces a mindfulness-type exercise leading eventually to mantra meditation.

I’m very happy to say that I’ve been a member of this school for 14 years and have met Mr Lambie on residential retreats. I’ve been a meditation student for 13 years and it has changed my life immensely. Great to see this online.

Just listened to this talk. Donald Lambie has fully convinced me that his is the best show in town! Superbly presented and executed, with most convincing reasoning. It seems to me has exemplified in himself the results of meditation, knowledge of wisdom and devotion to service. I have seen here presence fuelled by love. I am deeply grateful for this and I shall not forget it. Namaste.

Thank you Dr Donald Lambie and for the people responsible for uploading and organising this lecture. This was very inspiring indeed having started to look into philosophy and spirituality lately. I’m very interested to learn more. Thank you so much, Tony, NW England.

He said they have mantra over 50 years, but I know school is more than 100 years old, so what kind practice did they have before and why did they change it, if they did. Because they found better practice or other reasons?

Our School was founded in 1937, and we adopted the mantra meditation practice in the 1960s; this has not been changed at all. I hope that helps explain. Thanks for watching.
