  • Painting a mandala in a confined shape looks challenging, but it does not have to be. Through this step by step tutorial I show how to use the newer Happy Dotting Company tools to create a colorful Tropical Sea Turtle Mandala.
The dollar tree really has stepped up their crafting game. I found so many great shapes of wood to use for painting ideas from magnets to ornaments etc. Come and relax, sit and watch or paint a long with me for a fun adventure today.

Miranda, This turtle is stunning! I will be painting this for sure. I ALWAYS knock down the surface, especially dollar store wood with 220 grit sand paper, then use a tack cloth to clean. You can mix poly varnish or sealer into your paint to give it that smoother finish or, use Jo Sonja Clear Glaze Medium on the top of your base coat. But rub it down with super fine sanding film or a brown paper bag after base coating or glazing/ sealing. Worth the time cuz it makes painting soooo much easier. Viking Woodcrafts has the full line of DecoArt. It is a US company but ships internationally I believe. Unfortunately decorative painting has died a slow death once again. Makes hard to get good, fresh supplies!

Great tips. Does knock down mean you are sanding it?

@@MirandaPitrone Yes, Sand it with 220 grit sand paper to start, then a bit finer if you have it. If not, the 220 should be fine. Just always be sure to wipe your piece down with a well used tack cloth before painting.

This is so pretty, love the color pallet. My whole house is the beach, coastal look. I'm going to paint this turtle on both sides and use it as the decoration at the end of the chain on my ceiling fan. Currently there is a pelican, but I'm switching up to the turtle. The Dollar Store by my house was really stocked with the coastal, beachy decor. Very nice video, thank you and Hi from Colorado!!!

Your turtle is a little cutie and you picked perfect colors!! I have the Happy Dotting Company tools, also and I LOVE them ❤. I do still use the acrylic nail tools for walking dots, though, because I like having a larger range of sizes than just the S2 and S4. Thanks for the great tutorial!!

That is so kind of you to pop in and say. I have had some family emergencies and been doing a great deal of traveling this year. Also the studio we build flooded with all the storms , so I have suffered significant damage to the roof and walls. We have gotten some roof estimates for the outbuilding but they are in the 9k to 15k range. That is not in my art budget for now. :) Hopefully in the future :)

Yes I purchased Happy Dotting tools shortly after release. I like the larger numbers which are in millimetres. They don't roll around as muçh and comfortable to use.

yes. it is a comfortable grip! :) And the large flat ones are very helpful

You could also just sketch a general 3 inch turtle shape and try it...if you do not find the wood. Happy Painting
