Dave Brubeck likes the version and according to one interview, liked the fact that it was played in 4/4.... these were the days rock musicians were really musicians in the most strict sense of the word...
RIP to my idol Keith Emerson. :( Jazz enthusiasts don't like it because they like the Dave Brubeck one, but others LOVE this. This version is so cool and even Dave Brubeck liked it. Listen to it as an ELP piece.
2:55 begins a brief quote from Bach's famous "Toccata and Fugue in D-minor," which is a horror movie staple dating back to the original Lon Chaney Phantom of the Opera, in the 1920's. If that's the Final Fantasy VII battle music (don't know; I do not play the game), then it is no surprise, since the material is obviously public domain.
to all you "haterz" ....smoke a fat joint and listen to the man rip it on a Hammond organ.....anybody can play lounge jazz......this is 1970 it's called psychedelic music man get with it......go listen to Gates of Kiev 1971
Oh dear the jazz purists are in the comments section - for everyone else, this is a great 'rock' performance of this classic for a festival crowd. Of course it is different to the original, but isn't that the point? It would be very boring if they tried to do a simple imitation, which would no doubt anger the purists as well!
From 2:45 he gets the best ever distorted Hammond sound ever out of the lower manual, even with one drawbar less. The L100 is usually considered a poor relation, but not on this evidence. Anyone care to discuss?
Possibly some complex mix of trimming the amp in the organ to run hot, plus a mix of Leslie cabs and HiWatt amps? Keith's rig was fairly unconventional and took some cues from contemporary guitarists. Consider also how the audio for this gig was recorded. The sound crew had to capture multiple bands so we might not he hearing every element of the organ rig as the audience heard it.
yes I know this is david brubeck's work but what a piece of art....they did it in a gratefull way!!! in ilse of wigth what a great work!! who elsecould do this fuckin' great song this way like emmerson lake and palmer...i do not discharge it. opposing i like it!!! tell me who done greater than that!!!!???
What's your problem? You have the Brubeck version (undoubtedly great). You have this version (also great in a different way). It's not like ELP doing the song displaced the Brubeck version. Or were you looking for a carbon copy instead of an inventive alternative?
I cannot afford a B-3. I can afford an L model if I can find one. They usually sell for around $300. A beat B-3 might be found for $2500. And then we need to add the Leslie. Now we need a van to haul it, and a warm dry place to store it. But when I sit at a B-3, I become possessed. Still, I'd settle for the L or even a Porta-B!
Sad is what you have to read sometimes... Sad is talking about something you don't know what it is all about, or you are just unable to appreciate, while letting everybody know about your ignorance. Sad is thinking you can put Art left on the scale and difficulty on the right, so it's always better art that one which requires higher skills. Sad is closing your mind and ears to just one artist, album or style when there are lots of them "anytime anyhow anywhere". But keep trying, training is ok.
Oh for shit's sake ELP, how can you have the affrontry to not only change the time signature, thus negating the relevance of the title, but doing so wearing those horrendous outfits?? You silly, silly men! tarkus is wonderful though.
wow this is pretty terrible for ELP. you figure they'd do a better cover for such a great song but i guess they didn't know what groove was for this song

ELP were excellent!!!!💕 (Keith... our idol too♡), also Palmer!!!
The 4 Hammond Kings:
-Keith Emerson
-Jon Lord
-Rick Wakeman
-Ken Hensley
Look up Vincent Crane / Atomic Rooster
Brubeck complimented Emerson for his 4/4 interpretation..
Absolutely four out of four!
My favorite band covering my favorite tune... can you ask for more in life?

Deep Purple's THE MULE emulated this !!! RIP, Jon Lord & Keith Emerson! They're now jamming in heaven, for sure!
I think Space Trucking from the Made In Japan album...
0:37 is the third movement of Bach's Italiano Concerto. Totally recommend the jazzy version by Jacques Loussier
Buena Version , Saludos desde Guadalajara , Jalisco , Mëxico

RIP Keith :(
@ghylind
Carl Palmer is one of the greatest drummers in rock history. I'm pretty sure he's good enough to play in 9/8.
This is interesting to be sure, but one of the things that made Brubeck's music all that is was was the odd time signatures, in this case 9/8.
this is so beast. haha. i kinda like how they kept it in 4 the whole time.
what an original variation of the classic brubeck tune
I only vaguely remember that they'd done this, but comes as no surprise. I always thought I heard some Brubeck in Emerson's playing!! ;)
Psychedelic !!!
2:14 is pure magic
This is the greatest of performances

FUCK THE PURISTS!!!
knife to the keyboard! awesome!
I always thought Keith's L-100 would catch on fire whenever he did this to it.
incredible!
this is so good!!!

holy mackerel, it totally kicks in at like 1:15ish. that's awesome

Love this. Does anybody out there know what the opening theme Keith plays is from? Title? Composer?
I also wanted to know ... :(
it's from the 3rd movement of the italian concerto by bach
Roberto Russo Hi Roberto...Thanks so much!! I had given up hope on this. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!
Great Keith, Greg e Carl.
Just found this! As they used to say in the 70’s, it’s a happening.
...as stated on FFwiki
Does anyone else hear the boss battle music from Final Fantasy VII in this? Listen closely, they're very similar.
Yes!! Came here to say the same, but looks like I'm 10 years late haha
totally reminds me of the boss theme, which might not be coincidence!
@@lucasealbuquerque 10 years down the road, still kickin' and I learned that Nobuo Uematsu WAS in fact inspired by ELP as a composer. :D
Is there a version where Greg's bass is louder ? Almost cant hear it.
Maybe for the best. He's out of tune and lost for stretches of this.
The Original Black Mages
It still looks like Nice , maltreating his Hammond !
Was this not just called Rondo when The Nice did it????
Still `kin brilliant either way :)

@ThatYesGuy he can play also in 32840283/64
fuckin' noboby!!! yyyyeeaahhhhh@@@@
who dare to be better !!!!
I believe its a L-100 by the looks of it but very interesting performance its odd in 4/4 time, it loses that triplet feel
Its an L 100 actually!!!!! The other is the C3
Are You ?
not the 1st appearance
uh, desmond?
Weird. I watch the video and I can almost smell the pot smoke.
that poor b-3 organ.
Its not a b3 and its their version done their style and to critique it to the original does not make any sense.
si hendrix prendio fuego su guitarra, porq el no va a poder apuñalar su piano?....

What happened to the cool time signatures? D:
greg hadn't mastered the piece yet, he makes a lot of mistakes
Greg, being a musician’s musician, kept up and kept smiling. See him blow that kiss?
Yeah, but can you dance to it? LOL
Oh for shit's sake ELP, how can you have the affrontry to not only change the time signature, thus negating the relevance of the title, but doing so wearing those horrendous outfits?? You silly, silly men! tarkus is wonderful though.
It's sad, what they done with this rondo:(.
i dont like this elp stuff...but hell yes its a great version!
why did they change the song to 4/4? i think it sounds kind of whack in 4/4...
they have put it into lousy 4/4 and killed the song.
OMG this sounds HORRIBLE!?!?! HOW MANY DRUGS WHERE THEY ON??!?!?!
I’ve always been an Emerson Lake and Palmer fan but they sure are screwed with this tune. Not even recognizable
too bad this version is not in 9/8 like the original, this version RYTHM sucks
Crappy attempt at doing a jazz classic. Brubeck still owns this one.
+Adrian DeVore its not crappy at all, its just rock, he never said he is better than brubeck
PapunaOfficial i simply could'n't connect with it and found myself being totally bored while listening.
wow this is pretty terrible for ELP. you figure they'd do a better cover for such a great song but i guess they didn't know what groove was for this song
