Hello! Thanks for the question. The stars are point tokens. There aren't many opportunities to gain them as most of the points will come from cards and the board at the end of the game. Actually, I think the only instance you may gain the tokens is explained on page 12 of the rule book: "Each trait track has only 5 spaces. If you manage to make more than 5 symbols of a single trait type (such that you fill up the track), you gain 1 point token for each extra symbol you were not able to mark." At the end of the game, you will just add the point tokens to your final score. You may want to scan the rulebook to look for any other times where you can earn the tokens, but I think that's the only one. Hope this helps! - Lara

What are the star tokens for? I've played the game with my wife twice and can't figure out what they do or how you get them.

How do you remove the writing between plays? It’s not a single-play game, is it?
Not a single play at all! The markers are dry erase, so you just erase the ink when the game is over.
