The price difference isn;t actually that big. Yes, the regular Renault 5 starts from 25.000. But that is the base base version, regular ones with a big battery are 31-32000 and up? Pulls it a lot closer to the A290.
Agree. I find the 35K€ price tag of the "all options basic version" hard to justify when this iteration is so much better for just a bit more. This is a car I would buy to keep forever & upgrade regularly when EV tech makes progress. To commute in the city 30 kms per day, the cheap 25K€ is good enough.
@@patrickmonkman8151 New battery is specialist job, but hopefully in 10-20 years they will have more capacity, so you can chose lighter ones or longer range.
Absolutely. Black alloys suit some cars but not this. I reckon modern cars are quite tall and use black skirts and arches to make it look more squat - the black wheels doesn't make that black line stand out as much. It's a gross design compromise.

The technical upgrades sound fantastic, but think a RenaultSport 5 somewhere in between, with the mechanicals and wider track but style and simplicity is what it should really be. It's taken away some of the thoughtfulness in the 5 that's so appealing and replaced it with 'sporty' bling. The A110 looks so fantastic because it flows and doesn't have wings and angles all over it after all.
There's too many gimmicks. Nothing wrong with gimmicks, but when the cost is passed down to the customer I feel its out of touch. It should be an option to add the glass "mountain topology" thing or the fake fog lights.

Exactly!, that huge wheel only makes the range go down to the sink!. Not to mention the cost of the tyres. It looks bad as well. A 17 should be the max imo

You can't deny the French know how to make a performance car, if they offered 5 years fully comprehensive warranty and upped their customer service, I'd be at my dealer in a heartbeat. 👍
Great review… I own a lot of Renault Sport cars, even a 5 Turbo2… Unfortunately I rather drive my old cars to infinity and beyond then pay so much for the EV. Sorry Alpine…
Instead of EV, notice how they overladen every new car with more features, bells, whistles, posh niceties and premium insulation to justify the higher prices and profit margins. Higher prices and profit margins that creates the very currency inflation that reduces the value of profits necessitating further price inflation.
After they take either me away or my petrol injected car away then I will probably get a horse. No plugging in & no mot or tax. Just need a heated saddle 👍🤣
I'm sure it's just.a personal thing, but I very strongly dislike how it looks. I love the clean looks of the R5, but this looks like they took one and punched it in the face until it fell over then stuck random bits of plastic all over it.
Fantastic review Jonny, and I am so pleased that you 'get' RenaultSport, which is all about the chassis & suspension. The car looks stunning, I wish I could afford one as my daily driver to compliment my A110. As it is I'll have to keep going with the 12 year old VW Up!
Serious question: I have been seeing a trend of the smaller the battery the slower the charging speed. 50KWh batteries seldom get charging over 100kw. I have been dabbling in EVs since 2013 and apart from slightly thicker cables and different controller these cars could get 125 to 150 kw without much mark up. My thoughts are because of the smaller battery you need to charge more often so you want to reduce that time. Maybe I am missing something though… Our Jeep Appendage (I daren’t call it an Avenger) has the same set up 11KW AC and 100 KW DC.
That's just a limitation of the technology. If you have a bigger battery each cell charges slower, so you can pump up the speed. It's the same reason why you can't charge your phone at 100KW
As a petrolhead I just cant get excited about EVs. That footage of the 0-60 was depressing. EV is great as a means of transport, but not as an interest/passion. Maybe as the technology changes, that may change, but at the moment I cant imagine people in years to come going to car shows to look at a bunch of cars powered by essentially the same battery/electric motor. 😢
Thing about EV technology changing is it really won’t. To get more range= bigger heavier batteries. Which in turn means =bigger tyres=bigger wheels=bigger car overall =bloody pricey. EV pish
@@RonnieCurrie-ze1trI understand personal preference but don’t flat out lie or be that stupid. The battery technology and motors etc are continuously improving. Do you even understand battery technology improvements, literally new battery chemistry developments are made every few months or so. We continue to improve battery density to weight ratio. Battery’s are getting lighter and with more range. Ev’s are becoming more affordable gradually as manufacturers settle into making evs’s efficiently in the production process etc. dacia ev is £14,000 starting price, that would have been unheard of just 5 years ago. Obviously improvements are being made.
@@sickbozzer for an ultra car enthusiast maybe. People move on. I personally enjoy my lower maintenance costs, fewer moving parts, quiet relaxing drive(i can quietly whisper to talk to others in my car while doing 70mph on the motorway), easy driving allowing even more focus to be on the road ahead, cheaper ‘refueling costs’ (I charge at a destination charger at a local train station for £14 to fully charge and that lasts me dead on 2 weeks). I enjoy the acceleration with instant power no lags from gear changes etc). I enjoy the additional cabin space due to no transmission tunnel or massive engine up front and less body overhangs (even easier to park) and I also enjoy the fact that due to the battery being under the floor of the car it results in lower centre of gravity making the car far less likely to roll over in a crash etc.
I’m a biker, petrol head and I was quite negative when my wife leased an i3. However, regen braking is like a bike engine braking and it’s like a go kart for 4 people. I drive it like I stole it most of the time and it’s fun, grippy to a point, rear wheel drive, and so easy to thread around a city where I live, I really like it. For local driving it’s ace. Try one
I drive an A110 - this is interesting but honestly I really like the normal 5 and actually prefer both the interior and exterior design. Don't really need a quick EV to go alongside a quick ICE.
0-26 seconds in this vt was great - I was certain that it would have a 2 litre turbo or 3.6 v6 then you said those dreaded words "electric" - such an opportunity missed
I'm just so impressed by it. I'm Not a fan of modern cars, they have no soul or culture, but the Renault 5 and this ⬆️ Alpine version is absolutely everything a car should be. So cool 😎
Well.. as a 5-person car of frankly decent size (it beats A110 in size) its about as heavy as a Porsche Cayman. I would say that makes it pretty light. Especially if you then consider its an EV. I'm sure there is room to shave some off so that would be a future spec version perhaps. I hoped for a bit lighter but am not disappointed.
The new Megane is a really sharp looking car and the new Renault 5 concept was also great. This is brilliant. So many well designed features & nice details. Though it does get a bit cliched - Turbo 2 indents? Would definitely look at buying one.
I love the channel I like you a person alot Johnny but I just can't share your enthusiasm for EVs and the problem is neither do the other 80 percent of car enthustiasts I'd rather our hobby die with dignity than continue on watered down.
But your hobby doesn't need to 'die'. What's wrong with appreciating all types of car? Some EVs are good, some piston cars are good. Some people would benefit from using an EV daily, and it could in fact accelerate the appreciation and market for weekend petrol classics.
@TheLateBrakeShow I can't disagree with you there, I can appreciate they have their place, and if things were different and the outcome was that, we could all choose to drive what we wanted but as we are seeing they are deliberately trying to stop us driving which given the current route may put a nail in our coffins altogether. I have huge respect, and I enjoy all your car barn finds and collection videos they are absolutely awesome. You cater for everyone on here, so keep up the good work. Alot of people respect you as a car journalist which can't be said for the likes of Quentin Wilson who looks to just be willing to see the end of classic cars and instead taking hand outs to push the agenda. I hope I don't cause any offence to yourself but that's just my feeling on the situation and I say that as one of the biggest petrol heads that exists from performance cars to offshore powerboats they are everything I live for why I am so passionate when it may come down to losing engines.
@TheLateBrakeShow I was actually going to contact you at some point too I have a Nissan March Super Turbo with really cool rally, Nissan and Nismo history thats never been on the road but used in group n spec, the car needs full restoration one day in the next year I'm about to move house the cars not at my address its in a garage 4 miles away when I move to a house with a garage, I'm hoping to pull it to pieces and start doing it I was hoping you may be interested when I drag it out in doing some kind of barn find. I only want to feature it when I know I'm definitely starting the car, but that seemed like the best opportunity. Not sure if it's cool enough for a feature but I've got magazines with it on rally stages the Nissan plant up in Sunderland used it for promotion, a famous Japanese racing drivers son imported another one on the same ship which was done to group A spec and I have a video interview with one of the marketing guys at Nissan who picked it up from the docks in 1990. I believe it to be the first Super Turbo into the UK. Just think its story deserves to be told it's very long-winded. The car looks cool but 6.4 to 60mph is slow in 2024 the Fiat 500 Abarth petrol version will go that fast and that cars years old now , really a performance EV should do 60mph in 4 secs or less in 2024 but the car does look good

Exactly!, that huge wheel only makes the range go down to the sink!. Not to mention the cost of the tyres. It looks bad as well. A 17 should be the max imo
Love your shoes mate - proper chill
To all the Swedes watching this;
Doesn't the X in the lamps look like the symbol for XL Bygg? (XL Bygg is one of the largest lumber yard companies in Sweden)
Thanks Jonny,I love your style and presentation.I just can’t get excited about EV’s.I think I will never buy one.Man how I would love to own an Alpine 110 one day.I loved your review on that.IfGordon Murray uses one as his daily driver, you know it’s a GREAT CAR
I feel you same here as a renault 5 gt turbo owner 👍👌 well said
The more they keep announcing "EV" Hot hatch cars the more it drives up prices of old hot hatches. Nobody wants them.
Maybe focus on how they're over engineering cars with features and inflation in size and price. It's called profoteering baby
Instead of EV, notice how they overladen every new car with more features, bells, whistles, posh niceties and premium insulation to justify the higher prices and profit margins. Higher prices and profit margins that creates the very currency inflation that reduces the value of profits necessitating further price inflation.
Strange everyone is going crazy over the Hyundai Ioniq 5N , getting nothing but praise from car reviews and owners !
Well said.
After they take either me away or my petrol injected car away then I will probably get a horse. No plugging in & no mot or tax. Just need a heated saddle 👍🤣
I was hooked until mention of £37k was made.
I think the vanilla R5 makes more sense.
All in all kerb weight is pretty good! Definitely feels like they're sitting on a hyper AWD version for a later date.
Love you Jonny but not interested in EV, not for me sadly ,love the barn finds an old classics 👍
Beautiful car...I love what Renault's are doing with the comeback of famous old models... I want one!!!
I'm sure it's just.a personal thing, but I very strongly dislike how it looks. I love the clean looks of the R5, but this looks like they took one and punched it in the face until it fell over then stuck random bits of plastic all over it.
Agreed. You said it so well.
Fantastic review Jonny, and I am so pleased that you 'get' RenaultSport, which is all about the chassis & suspension. The car looks stunning, I wish I could afford one as my daily driver to compliment my A110. As it is I'll have to keep going with the 12 year old VW Up!
Lovely, but...if only it was an ICE! By the way, great review Jonny, thank you
Serious question: I have been seeing a trend of the smaller the battery the slower the charging speed. 50KWh batteries seldom get charging over 100kw.
I have been dabbling in EVs since
2013 and apart from slightly thicker cables and different controller these cars could get 125 to 150 kw without much mark up.
My thoughts are because of the smaller battery you need to charge more often so you want to reduce that time.
Maybe I am missing something though…
Our Jeep Appendage (I daren’t call it an Avenger) has the same set up 11KW AC and 100 KW DC.
@@o0alias0oeh evs are still boring
Try one
Looks great & great overview Johnny
At first glance it looks lovely, but after 20 minutes all I'm seeing is an SUV with massive wheels and a really high waistline.
What you on about, it's smaller than a clio.
Thought the same...like the 'fat' Fiat 500
I drive an A110 - this is interesting but honestly I really like the normal 5 and actually prefer both the interior and exterior design. Don't really need a quick EV to go alongside a quick ICE.
0-26 seconds in this vt was great - I was certain that it would have a 2 litre turbo or 3.6 v6 then you said those dreaded words "electric" - such an opportunity missed
The R5 was my next car to save for, now I think it might be this. Just perfection. I would like an R5 color tho.
Sorry but the X lights just remind me of Family Fortunes. (Insert wrong answer sound)
‘Our survey said…..’
So,it's noughts and crosses headlamps?
It's not a GT turbo without a small turbo charged petrol engine. They're just riding on the glory of a real car.
Love it, great review as usual
When did the Renault 5 become an SUV?
If you were expecting ioniq 5 N performace just understand the alpine is 800kg lighter!! Driving dynamics over performance is great for every day use
Looks fantastic
Jonny, they broke the mould when they made you. Love watching your reviews, whatever the car.
Thank you. Not sure it's true, but appreciate the comment!
Very simple: if I had the money in my account, I would buy it tomorrow. Or, better even, today... What a car🤗
I liked when you said the lights are x-cellent 👍
Looks more like a Range Rover than Renault 5 GT Turbo 0:53
It's way too tall and big
had a Gordini non turbo. This is lovely. Not a fan of electric cars but this might change my view
Who’s gonna be the first to make a real petrol turbo this thing deserves…probably Jamie shaw
I'm just so impressed by it.
I'm Not a fan of modern cars, they have no soul or culture, but the Renault 5 and this ⬆️ Alpine version is absolutely everything a car should be.
So cool 😎
And they’ve instantly gone against what made the A110 great. This thing is far from lightweight.
Well.. as a 5-person car of frankly decent size (it beats A110 in size) its about as heavy as a Porsche Cayman.
I've got my own channels on social media which I'd like to use when I start doing this car this is just my account I have the subscription on for the no adverts 🤣 poor boy industries is my UA-cam and Instagram. Cheers for the messages
You’re right.. I’m not into electric cars.. I like manual gearbox, a petrol engine that revs and make the sound we all love, the mechanics.. driver in charge so to speak. Yes, I have a diesel auto - It’s a LR Discovery II - and it’s perfect there.. the daily is a tuned 2018 Countryman 1,5 All4 Cooper Works inside outside and wheels. When tuned it’s briskly, close to a Cooper S when I run it on 98 octane. So the only electric I really liked is the BMW i3.. This and the Renault 4 trigger my interest. I’ve been a Renault Alpine fan, but both these two new Renaults are a revelation- Renault is back!
Look at the size of it! An EV Alpine makes as much sense as an EV G Wagen
10:20 yes, very important details.
Also good to see all those Alpine wheels are asymetrical!!
The car looks cool but 6.4 to 60mph is slow in 2024 the Fiat 500 Abarth petrol version will go that fast and that cars years old now , really a performance EV should do 60mph in 4 secs or less in 2024 but the car does look good
No one needs that for a daily car though, it’s not a supercar
@@sunthroughtheblinds Literally where i live near London the highest speed ive ever got to was 60mph lol as the streets are so narrow and theres so many turnings that its bloody dangerous to go fast here , most of my neighbours are driving those little Citroen Ami things now as they just commute to the office and back in Central London , they could afford to drive really flash cars but imagine owning for example a 911 Porsche in London ? If i owned a car like that id be scared someone would hit it or vandalise it and the waste of money on insurance tax and fuel is not worth it.
Another great video Jonny, exciting little car this one bit still love the r5
Tbh, with Chris Harris gone a bit quiet, Jonny's the best thing on our screens. He's so perky and animated and so bloody passionate about cars.
That's a big compliment to hear (even though I'm not I can compete with Monkey!)
@@TheLateBrakeShow to be honest Jonny, no one actually can compete with you.
From pulling an old car out of a barn and trying to start it, taking us on a journey of building out a country lane/byway car (and competing) to making beautiful presentations of new cars like the EV.
You are the best thing in car entertainment!
