      Totally agree Sean, would be good to get Ivan in a sea kayak to explain how we can still produce power whilst maintaining some contact with the kayak

    Many thanks for taking the time to pass on these nuggets. It’s been interesting taking your core principles and adapting to Greenland paddle. There’s chunky differences, but all the key elements are applicable. Incredibly useful stuff for long trips with an old rusty engine.

    Thanks a lot for these videos! I'm a recreational, mostly "internet taught" kayaker since I don't train at any club, and I can safely say I learned most from your videos, especially the masterclass one, while trying all the aspects of the paddling technique out on my own. Kudos for making this, stay safe and be well!

    Superb teaching, real insight and clarity, but no surprise there. I really appreciate the careful thought you've put into how you put this across, delivered with a light touch but an expert's judgement. The self deprecation and humour is brilliant, and you've reassured this middle aged male with poor posture that there is hope...... a generous gift to ALL paddlers, competitive and recreational. Thank you so much and I'll mail you some wet sandy socks right now....

  • @garycoulton2565

    Thanks Ivan. A brilliant series especially for we coaches. One thing I've realised is that the problems paddlers moan about are always a symptom of a problem much earlier in the stroke. When we focus on the earlier issue the symptom usually disappears. For example, many decent paddlers will moan about a lack of a solid catch but this is because they are starting the next stroke before finishing the previous one. They don't get to the solid top hand and so give away leverage.
    Thanks so much!
    Cheers
    Gary

    Great series ... was in the process of looking to buy a more advance (intermediate) ocean ski to see if I was ready for it. That is now on the back burner as I have a world of improvements to focus on ... and my stable ski will be perfect to put into in practice.
    Would also love to see a cut of just the exercises (although people will miss a lot of the exercise context if they miss the the theory)

    Great series Ivan, only wished I seen it sooner. I feel like I'm finally making improvements based on your explainations. I've been struggling as a master paddler when I went from a stability 4 boat to a 2, exposing many flaws in my technique and creating new ones in attempts to not tip. I know we cannot be friends at the moment because I wear socks, but that was mainly to protect my feet from fishermen lures when I fell in. Hopefully soon I may be able to ditch the socks because I will no longer fall in with my improved skill.

    In all seriousness, thank you for a great series. I originally discovered your previous video at Richmond Club when I transitioned from a peddle fishing kayak to a paddling ocean fishing kayak. 2+yrs later I'm looking to try my hand at a surfski paddling and come across this series - I've been given an Epic V10 for free as a starter so technique is going to be key...if I can stay upright long enough. Appreciate it's an advanced ski but it was given to me for free so is worth a shot.
    A great little reminder of the end to end process - this time with exercises. Thank you

    Great video's and instruction's in a very simple lay person way....especially for someone coming from a rowing background, and from Australia!!! The hardest bit is to get the blade into the water without rotating the body. Such a fine movement. Thanks again.

    I am an outrigger coach and believe that much of what you are advocating works extremely well in the small OC 1s and also in the OC 6s. I have watched the series many times and find that breaking the advice into manageable chunks of 15mins or so is perfect.
    Transfering technique to OC 1s is easier as the sitting position is not so very different than in a ski but in OC 6 the seat is much higher. Nonetheless as long as we have grip on the bottom of the canoe the ideas transfer well.
    Just one question about which I would like your advice if you can understand my query:
    With the different position of seat and the length of the paddle I find it difficult to position the top hand so far back (in line with shoulders) to engage the catch. As a result the top hand tends to be some distance in front of the body at the catch. In that position the concept of upper arm being from top hand to the opposite shoulder still works but there does appear to be an angle between the top of the upper arm and shoulder. I assume that if that joint doesn't fold and remains firm then we shouldn't spill power, Am I on the right track.
    Thanks once more for such an informative and unique look at the biomechanics of the stroke.

    Thank you, absolutely loved the series. Two questions please- how much do you believe this efficient paddling technique carries over into whitewater paddling? and secondly, I'm still unsure about the catch- in your earlier Richmond club video I thought you suggested sliding the paddle in slightly forward for a solid catch a split second stationary, before the start of rotation. In video 6, Bottom Arm, I thought you were placing the catch at the start of the downward movement and rotation- can you please clear it up in my mind ? Cheers

    • @ultimatekayaks6499
      @ultimatekayaks6499  4 роки тому

      Hi Barbara, I am certain that sound mechanics for forward paddling are transferable across all disciplines.
      The catch is always hard to describe, the notion of putting the paddle in going forward is good to have in mind, simply to stop it being brought back to hit the water. the instruction I give my athletes is to put the paddle in the water with the top shoulder. The bottom arm just drops the paddle down.

    Ok, I just had an aha! moment about why my left elbow keeps on getting a slight "tennis/golf elbow" bothering and why my left motion does not "feel" resistant from the water the same way as my right motion (and I am left handed - go figure!). Thank you! And please don't get rid of the beard - it's part of the reason I keep on watching these clips!

  • @Alastair510
    @Alastair510 4 роки тому

    Paddle position and track; you've talked in some of your coaching sessions about the paddle tracing a 'J' shape.
    Watching videos of top class paddlers, their paddle seems to trace pretty much along the line of the wake before swinging out to the exit.
    My 'lock' on the water seems to be more solid (more of a feeling of pushing the boat forward past the paddle) if I let the paddle travel out as I rotate. The 'natural' path is pretty close to the wake line. If I keep my top hand at the same height (so it is travelling parallel to the water), bottom arm elbow down, then the paddle swings out and exits naturally.
    Is that the 'J' you were talking about?

    • @ultimatekayaks6499
      @ultimatekayaks6499  4 роки тому

      J is simplistic. Just trying to stop the C!
      While the hand drops to its lowest point the paddle comes straight back then it tracks out.
      All of my stuff is adaptable to the individual. Whatever works for you but avoid the definite “ no’s”.
      The main reason I describe a J is to ensure the paddle is pushed down into the water.
