You will either be vilified or have statues built in your honour in Scotland. The whisky gravy a very nice touch. A pastry thistle décor maybe is all that is missing. I do hope when the big country hotels in the Highlands start knocking these out that they give credit to Rick's Highland haggis pie. Nice one, a brilliant creation.
Wow! Thank you. Best, Rik
Thanks, Rik! Next haggis from scratch?
Rik, you are like the Bob Ross of cooking. Really chills me out watching your videos.
Yeh without the happy little clouds🤣👍👌
Thank you. Best, Rik
Omg me too that’s why I subscribed 😂
I like his simplicity and basic common sense, if you don't like it don't put it in, its all going to get cooked so you don't need to be elaborate. Sort of something anyone and everyone can do.
Standing ovation Rik . A true masterpiece 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you. Best, Rik
I cannot smell it here in Alberta.....but OMG - YOUR RECIPES ARE DIVINE!!!!. Just finished a dozen spelt/oatmeal waffles, to freeze. Home cooking is FAR tastier and nutritious than the commercial. Watch shows like this - and change your life for the better. .
Wow! Thank you. Best, Rik
Now we're talking! We need this here in Scotland!
Worth a make! Thank you. Best, Rik
I was hungry in thirty seconds from watching this
Thank you. Best, Rik
So was I....YUM!
Coming to Scotland for the first in November and as a chef, your videos make me most excited for this trip. This has to be delicious as are all of your recipes. I appreciate you!
Appreciated, very much! Thank you. Best, Rik
That’s an absolute stoater of a pie Rik 😋😍, combined with that delicious whisky sauce, made with my tipple of choice Famous Grouse Scotch!👌 I love Grant’s tinned Haggis - which is made here in Ayrshire just around 6 miles away from where I live, (so thanks for giving them a shout out 👍), it also makes a fantastic quick & tasty filling for a baked potato. Thank you 🙏 as always for sharing your ingenious Recipies. xx 👨🍳👌🩷
Thank you, appreciated. Best, Rik
Looks wonderful. I’ve never tried haggis but I’ve seen how it’s made on YT and thought it’d be horrible, can’t wait to try it one day. My father used to kid us and say the haggis was an actual animal with long legs on one side to help it run around the sides of mountains. I know he used to make something he called haggis occasionally with a sheep stomach, various minced offal and barley but I don’t recall ever tasting it or even the smell of it. I defy anyone to pipe up and say they made your pie first, truly original. 👍
Thanks mate. Yes this is one of mine. Not many will look at this, its not just haggis neaps and tatties piled on a plate. I can tell you the two legs longer so it can run around the mountain was common over here too! We were always told that. - That is amazing!!!. Thank you. Best, Rik
I tried Haggis once at work on national dish day, wasn't keen but maybe it could be the cook 🤣🤣, she was the boss so we just sucked it up and tried some😂 must say it looks a great pie 👍🇦🇺
What a beauty that is Rik . ❤...
I use Macsweens Haggis it is very reasonable in price .
Also for those who didn't realise we call it a Swede & the Scottish call it a Turnip ..& vice versa ..
A little dunlop cheese crumbled on top before adding the pastry lid would take this to another level ..🙏..
Great tip! Thank you. Best, Rik
Its turnip in my part of Yorkshire not swede. 😊
That is the most beautiful pie I have ever seen, and the Scottish whiskey gravy! I think I'm in love! 💕
Wonderful! Thank you. Best, Rik
The whole thing is incredible and what a presentation! But that whiskey gravy, oh my!! Amazing! Thank you, Rik.
Thank you. Appreciated. Best, Rik
You had me at Whiskey Gravy! Oh, it looks sublime!
Thank you. Best, Rik
Ha ha ha. Sod the pie, lets just have the gravy.
Ha ha ha - and some crusty to dip in. Thank you. Best, Rik
I’m for that! 🏴
What I like about you Rik is no bull just proper food and simple👌👍
I appreciate that very much! Thank you. Best, Rik
I first had Haggis in Stirling in the 1980's, love it, this is a pie to die for...
Thank you. Best, Rik
What Celebration 🥳 oh my goodness These are like the pies you see in old movies Thank You 🎉
Thank you. Best, Rik
Highland pie. Looks bloody amazing! I love haggis neeps and tatties. Well thought out xx
Thank you. Best, Rik
You had me at WHISKEY Gravy. I NEED to try this!
Thank you. Best, Rik
LOOKS DIVINE 😋 I'M HUNGRY 🤦 THANK YOU FOR SHARING WITH US 👌
Thank you. Best, Rik
Being a Scotsman myself, and living in the Philippines. I must say you had me wanting to catch a flight home just to go make that pie. It looked bloody fantastic.
Cheers, mate. You are just round the corner form me - here in Thailand 20 years. This isn't bad for an original recipe. Thank you. Best, Rik
Well you really do learn something new everyday just looked up Scottish neeps and find out that they're actually turnips young with white flesh not swedes tho also a turnip derived from Sweden in the 17 century so called a swede with yellow flesh 🤔 well I never new that 🙄 we've always been brought up swedes and turnips as being a different root vegetable but are actually the same but a different varieties that has blown me away and all from watching your cooking vid 🤦🏻♂️ amazing thank you Rik 👌👍👍❤️
Blown me away too! So is it a turnip or a swede or is the swede a turnip? Ha ha ha. Cant wait for folks to pickup on this thread. Thank you. Best, Rik
1 I didn't know you could get haggis in a tin, and 2 whiskey gravy that just up my street. nice one Rik
Cheers mate - That Haggis by Grants is really good! There are others as well well there are two companies. Whisky gravy lovely! Thank you. Best, Rik
Me last message just shot off the screen Rik so I'm not repeating myself. That pie looks delicious Rik and that gravy, yummy😃👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you. Best, Rik
“End Hot” is baaack! I’ve missed that. 😂 And that pie looks absolutely amazing. 🤤
Thank you. Aye - it pops up "end hot" Best, Rik
Second comment to add so your followers know that they can actually freeze any leftover Hot water dough and use it next time they are making a pie.Just make sure its wrapped well, and put in a Ziplock freezer bag as a second layer and to keep multiple batches together. I just used a batch I made a month ago and it thawed and rolled like it was fresh. Cheers!
Thank you. Best, Rik
Haggis is proof that British food isn’t as bad as they say ❤
Thank you. Best, Rik
It's Scottish!
@@user-kt1re6ui4sScotland is in Britain 😂
Absolutely fantastic chef, I was married 49 years on the 25th January I think its also burns night I love haggis needs and tatties great recipe Rik. Cheers
Cheers, Harold. Thank you. Best, Rik.
Hey Rik, what a pie 😍
I love haggis so that is definitely going on my favs list. The only thing I’d do differently is to make a carrot and swede mash and add MORE haggis, LOL!
I absolutely love carrot and swede mash, butter and black pepper. Thank you. Best, Rik
The Scottish and 'English' names come from same origin. The veg is called a "Swedish turnip" to distinguish it from white turnips. (it came to UK from Europe in late 18th C). English dropped the 'turnip' part of name. 'neep seems to an Old English word from which "turnip" may be derived. Oxford English Dictionary says neep used to be used outside Scotland in wider Britain as dialect word for turnip.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Rik you are the king of pies for sure. I eat a fair bit of Haggis and use it in many dishes just like corned beef.
Love my pies. Been making them for a couple of weeks. Thank you. Best, Rik
Rik, you are a crazy mad food scientist for this absolutely epic looking creation! This will be on my bucket list to try, once I source that canned haggis. Another great video! Thanks for doing what you do!
Fantastic! Thank you. Best, Rik
That's some pie.😃
Thank you. Best, Rik
That looks amazing mmmmmmm
Thank you. Best, Rik
Wow. That pie looks amazing. Warm and filling. Just what they need in the cold weather, in Scotland. Thanks again for sharing another great recipe, Rik.
Thank you. Appreciated. Best, Rik
That looks delicious Rik. Yum yum. love Debra xxx
Thank you, Debra. Appreciated. Best, Rik
Oh! That looks wonderful.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Rik you always inspire to be creative and enjoy, thank you.
Thank you. Best, Rik
I just use plain whiskey sauce, usually on my ice cream; Put ice cream in a bowl, open the bottle and pour all over until the desired amount is around the dish. That pie is super, thank you.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Look. At. That!
Thank you. Best, Rik
Love your little bit of butter🤣🤤🤤💜🇦🇺

All I can add is OMG!!!❤❤❤

Thank you. Best, Rik
That looked really scrumptious Rik 😋👍 well I never in my 59yrs a Welsh man heard of swedes called neeps before you learn something new everyday thanks Rik 👌👍 like all your vids keep them coming 👍 ❤
Thank you. Is it a turnip that looks like a swede or rutabaga elsewhere! Best, Rik
It’s so beautiful it almost brought a tear to me eye 😄
Wow! Thank you. Best, Rik
I'll be giving this a go. I make veggie haggis neeps n tatties pasties (without the nice layering that you do) but I've never thought of the warm water pastry or making an actual pie. This is another one that I'll be copying now 👍
Enjoy, J. I make pasties too! Different to the pie. With not making haggis myself I have to use the tin - I like Grants and McSweens all easy to use. Thank you. Best, Rik
@@BackyardChef for veggie haggis MacSweens is my favourite, followed by Simon Howie's. I wish I could acquire a taste for the real thing but ot's not happening, so the veggie versions have to do me. 😀
Subbed! Came here from the corned beef hash! What a star sharing this. I hope everyone watching subs!
Thanks for the sub! Thank you. Best, Rik
That looks abs delicious Rik and that gravy, wow.😃👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you. Best, Rik
Never thought I'd ever say this, but you've made me want to get a can of haggis. Or at least make that whiskey gravy to use with something beefy. Or maybe a similar bourbon gravy to go over ham. Ah, the ideas. Genius, Rik!
Thank you. Best, Rik
Perfecto! Ive been watching La Herencia de Las Vuidas and it's all in Spanish so I'm learning Sonoran Mexican dishes AND studying Spanish at the same time all while waiting for Backyard Chef video to post this morning. Your pie is exquisite as always. The jury is still out on the Haggis part.😂 Thankyou Rik!
Thank you. Best, Rik
That haggis at the back of my freezer is coming out at the bank holiday weekend.
I prefer my whisky in a glass though.
Have a wee dram when making. Lovely! Thank you. Best, Rik
Oh this looks fantastic. I love the concept...... I could happily live on haggis n neeps, minimal mash for me... Call it pie from heaven!!! I am watching this at 14.30bst and I know my dinner today is good old fashioned Scottish chilli con carne but this pie is what I want (husband hates haggis....) Thank you Rik.
You are very welcome, Liz. Thank you. Best, Rik
Another fantastic pie. You can't beat a good haggis, don't ask what it's made from, just eat it. My wife doesn't like the whiskey sauce though. Other than ordinary gravy, I don't really know what to serve it with?
Serve with Mashed carrots, little butter and a shake of pepper, and some cabbage on the side too - Just have the gravy over the top - delicious! Thank you. Best, Rik
Brilliant, Rik!! I immediately loved haggis for the first time while touring around Scotland from "across the pond." Thus, I appreciate your translating the English 'neeps' to English 'rutabagas,' but I HAD to find out if tins of haggis be available here in the States. Amazon carries "Grants." But I was flabbergasted to see that Amazon carries "Vegetarian Haggis" from Caledonian Kitchen. Incredible as it seems, there must be former lovers of real haggis whose doctors (?), wives (?), whoever got them to go vegetarian!
Thanks for sharing. Good luck! Thank you. Best, Rik.
i would try this gut we dont have haggis in malta ...hubby would love this....
Thank you. Best, Rik
I - THINK I have had Haggis once. It was a long time ago ang I am fairly certain that was the only time. I am not sure if I was impressed, probably not. It seemed to be just like a Scotch Pie and I have never been overwhelmed by them either.
I thought Swede and urnip were two separate vegatables. As a child I recall Sweede being used to bulk out Mashed Potatoes but I did think that Neeps was the Scottish corruption for Turnip which I believe cook out white whereas the Swede cooks out orangy. I like both/either.
I am going to try this. As much for the fact that the last time, also the first time, I made a deep Pie like this I did not know anything about pastry and the instructions said something like, "Line a 8 x 4 inch Springform Pan with Pastry" etc. So I did, A bit like wall Papering. Naturally it leaked a little but the pie was good and I shall use my new found information to do it properly this time.
Thank you. Best, Rik
man I could almost smell it!
Thank you. Best, Rik
Omgoodness this is a must try! Thanks
Thank you. Best, Rik.
Wow, looking really good❤
Thank you. Best, Rik
What a stunner!
Thank you. Best, Rik
OO - You could have used the excess pastry to make cow horns to go in top.🤠
Thank you. Best, Rik
Haggis don’t have horns (well, only the near extinct Sutherland Haggis….)
@@tornagawn But Desparate Dan's pies do 🤠
Well done Rik😊
Thank you. Best, Rik.
❤a beautiful pie❤
Thank you. Best, Rik.
Gosh that looks good Rik!!
Thank you. Best, Rik
I have never seen haggis anything here in Indiana USA 🤣and I am a Campbell.
Oh Wow! I buy in tins - its easier than making! Thank you. Best, Rik
Haggis traditionally contains lung and other offal. For this reason, it is illegal to import by American food standards.
I'm thinking I'd substitute scrapple. Don't know what's in that either but it is tasty.😊
@@yvonnefarrell1029 Love scrapple, sounds good great idea.
Had no idea you can get canned haggis. We can get it fresh here although not with lungs. That pie looks delish even though I don't care for haggis. That whisky sauce is a great touch.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Looks good .
Thank you. Best, Rik
Wow. I have never heard of tinned haggis here in New Zealand. I looked it up and I can get it online from a NZ website. It is the same as you have here, the Grants.
I have never tasted it and I am quite curious. I am tempted to get some.
This looks absolutely divine.
Its worth a taste just once - Then its decisions if you like or not. Thank you. Best, Rik
I am surprised you arent getting mobbed, with that smell coming out of your kitchen Ric.
Ha ha ha. Thank you. Best, Rik
Excuse me,but what is haggis ? I’ve never heard of it before, I do love all of the other ingredients and love to try different foods! This looks great. I like watching your UA-cam channel
Thank you. Best, Rik
That looks really nice 😋, but I haven’t seen haggis in a shop yet. And I have to look what neeps is, can’t see this from the cubes. P.s. Searched and found it, neeps is called Steckrübe oder erdkohlrabi in German. Delicious in stews 😋
Wow! Thanks for sharing. Thank you. Best, Rik
We can't get haggis in the U.S. :( Dumb ass law. I'm thinking maybe tripe, liver and onions, chopped with some ground meat? idk, maybe we can get the canned stuff, I'll have to check. English pies are world class. This is a good creation. The hot water pastry is so simple. Whiskey gravy...how highland is that? Thanks Rik :) good pie :)
Thanks for sharing, appreciated. Thank you. Best, Rik
❤❤❤❤😊
Thank you. Best, Rik
Hi Rik, sadly Haggis is not my thing which is bad as we have Scottish relatives. Great take on a traditional dish though mate, well done. Cheers, Norm.
Thank you, Norm. Appreciated what a proper gent you are. Thank you. Best, Rik
@@BackyardChef Wow, thanks Rik. I appreciate that. From one Yorkshire gent to another, cheers buddy 😄
A little bit more whiskey! 😆
Thank you. Best, Rik
Shepherd's pie made with haggis ( or haggis and mince lamb/ mutton/beef) and a layer of neep under the spuds is brilliant. The traditional seasoning is white pepper. (Works well with root veg particularly tatties and neeps.)
Just one question Rik.. Did you use enough butter?
Could do with a ta more. Thank you. Best, Rik
Took my DNA test last year. I'm from mostly the Highlands! One thing I think I'd have a hard time eating is Hagas.
Thank you, Its all in the mind - it actually tastes amazing. Best, Rik
Do you ever sleep Rik? That pie looks amazing! Can you recommend a vegetarian alternative to Haggis?
Vegetarian Haggis as it happens! That's in a tin also. Thank you. Best, Rik
@@BackyardChef Ah, should have seen that coming. I wanted a different option, I don't live in the UK so veggie haggis isn't available. Also, I try to stay away from tinned/processed food.
I was only 17 seconds in and started to salivate.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Now I need to find haggis and Dunlop cheese🙄
Thank you. Best, Rik
Maybe just a whimpy Sasanach, but, I can manage kidneys and liver, but lung is not on my horizon. 😂
Thank you. Best, Rik
Hi Rick. Are you in Thailand? If so, where did you get the air fryer oven from?
England or USA. Thank you. Best, Rik
All you can get here is canned food for adult dogs called lamb haggis, or stuff you make yourself (which I heard is quite a hassle). A lot of rare foods are available to buy online, so haggis is not among them
Thank you. Best, Rik
Haggis, 🤔🤔
In a tin. Thank you. Best, Rik.
Is there a rice version for those who think that oats should be given back to the horse???
Not out of a tin. Thank you. Best, Rik
What’s wrong with the lumpy sauce ?
Thank you. Best, Rik
I don't like tinned haggis, it's nothing like the proper stuff and it's very fatty. If I make this I would use real haggis and more of it.
Good on ya. Thank you. Best, Rik
For the uninitiated, haggis is a traditional Scottish dish (usually served on Burn’s Night - 25th Jan which celebrates the Scottish poet Robbie Burns). It comprises a mixture of beef or mutton heart, lungs and liver chopped up with oats and a load of aromatic spices that are then stuffed into a sheep’s stomach and then is boiled until cooked through. For me, personally 🤢
Thank you. Best, Rik
Why does your pastry always looked undercooked?
This is not undercooked its Hot water crust pastry - Thank you. Best, Rik
