You will either be vilified or have statues built in your honour in Scotland. The whisky gravy a very nice touch. A pastry thistle décor maybe is all that is missing. I do hope when the big country hotels in the Highlands start knocking these out that they give credit to Rick's Highland haggis pie. Nice one, a brilliant creation.

That’s an absolute stoater of a pie Rik 😋😍, combined with that delicious whisky sauce, made with my tipple of choice Famous Grouse Scotch!👌 I love Grant’s tinned Haggis - which is made here in Ayrshire just around 6 miles away from where I live, (so thanks for giving them a shout out 👍), it also makes a fantastic quick & tasty filling for a baked potato. Thank you 🙏 as always for sharing your ingenious Recipies. xx 👨‍🍳👌🩷

Looks wonderful. I’ve never tried haggis but I’ve seen how it’s made on YT and thought it’d be horrible, can’t wait to try it one day. My father used to kid us and say the haggis was an actual animal with long legs on one side to help it run around the sides of mountains. I know he used to make something he called haggis occasionally with a sheep stomach, various minced offal and barley but I don’t recall ever tasting it or even the smell of it. I defy anyone to pipe up and say they made your pie first, truly original. 👍

Thanks mate. Yes this is one of mine. Not many will look at this, its not just haggis neaps and tatties piled on a plate. I can tell you the two legs longer so it can run around the mountain was common over here too! We were always told that. - That is amazing!!!. Thank you. Best, Rik

What a beauty that is Rik . ❤...
I use Macsweens Haggis it is very reasonable in price .
Also for those who didn't realise we call it a Swede & the Scottish call it a Turnip ..& vice versa ..
A little dunlop cheese crumbled on top before adding the pastry lid would take this to another level ..🙏..

Second comment to add so your followers know that they can actually freeze any leftover Hot water dough and use it next time they are making a pie.Just make sure its wrapped well, and put in a Ziplock freezer bag as a second layer and to keep multiple batches together. I just used a batch I made a month ago and it thawed and rolled like it was fresh. Cheers!

The Scottish and 'English' names come from same origin. The veg is called a "Swedish turnip" to distinguish it from white turnips. (it came to UK from Europe in late 18th C). English dropped the 'turnip' part of name. 'neep seems to an Old English word from which "turnip" may be derived. Oxford English Dictionary says neep used to be used outside Scotland in wider Britain as dialect word for turnip.

Brilliant, Rik!! I immediately loved haggis for the first time while touring around Scotland from "across the pond." Thus, I appreciate your translating the English 'neeps' to English 'rutabagas,' but I HAD to find out if tins of haggis be available here in the States. Amazon carries "Grants." But I was flabbergasted to see that Amazon carries "Vegetarian Haggis" from Caledonian Kitchen. Incredible as it seems, there must be former lovers of real haggis whose doctors (?), wives (?), whoever got them to go vegetarian!

I - THINK I have had Haggis once. It was a long time ago ang I am fairly certain that was the only time. I am not sure if I was impressed, probably not. It seemed to be just like a Scotch Pie and I have never been overwhelmed by them either.
I thought Swede and urnip were two separate vegatables. As a child I recall Sweede being used to bulk out Mashed Potatoes but I did think that Neeps was the Scottish corruption for Turnip which I believe cook out white whereas the Swede cooks out orangy. I like both/either.
I am going to try this. As much for the fact that the last time, also the first time, I made a deep Pie like this I did not know anything about pastry and the instructions said something like, "Line a 8 x 4 inch Springform Pan with Pastry" etc. So I did, A bit like wall Papering. Naturally it leaked a little but the pie was good and I shall use my new found information to do it properly this time.

Haggis traditionally contains lung and other offal. For this reason, it is illegal to import by American food standards.

Had no idea you can get canned haggis. We can get it fresh here although not with lungs. That pie looks delish even though I don't care for haggis. That whisky sauce is a great touch.

Wow. I have never heard of tinned haggis here in New Zealand. I looked it up and I can get it online from a NZ website. It is the same as you have here, the Grants.
I have never tasted it and I am quite curious. I am tempted to get some.

That looks really nice 😋, but I haven’t seen haggis in a shop yet. And I have to look what neeps is, can’t see this from the cubes. P.s. Searched and found it, neeps is called Steckrübe oder erdkohlrabi in German. Delicious in stews 😋

We can't get haggis in the U.S. :( Dumb ass law. I'm thinking maybe tripe, liver and onions, chopped with some ground meat? idk, maybe we can get the canned stuff, I'll have to check. English pies are world class. This is a good creation. The hot water pastry is so simple. Whiskey gravy...how highland is that? Thanks Rik :) good pie :)

Shepherd's pie made with haggis ( or haggis and mince lamb/ mutton/beef) and a layer of neep under the spuds is brilliant. The traditional seasoning is white pepper. (Works well with root veg particularly tatties and neeps.)
Just one question Rik.. Did you use enough butter?

For the uninitiated, haggis is a traditional Scottish dish (usually served on Burn’s Night - 25th Jan which celebrates the Scottish poet Robbie Burns). It comprises a mixture of beef or mutton heart, lungs and liver chopped up with oats and a load of aromatic spices that are then stuffed into a sheep’s stomach and then is boiled until cooked through. For me, personally 🤢
