I'm 21 and I secretly want to be a fn pro but I know that if I go back to playing 6+ hours everyday, I wouldn't do well at work, id spend less time with my family, and my health would take a massive hit. It's just not worth it.

It's not worth it. Also Fortnite competitive is full of DMA cheaters. It's a shame, because zero build FNCS would captivate the world and overshadow og mode.

      @simplyeyeronic1443 2 місяці тому +5

@k.a.8725 I wouldn't say it's less reaction time per say - there's absolutely players that use excellent reactions and anticipation to succeed, even if the combos and sequences they do are suboptimal.
That said there isn't really anything in fighting games that does near instantaneous damage like shooters so being able to react as quickly isn't as important.

    • @feersided
      @feersided 2 місяці тому +13

@@mAny_oThERSs Oh it’s definitely reaction time all the way. For instance: in sf6, getting hit by DI will put you in a vulnerable state in the corner, and you have around 1 second to react and counter it, otherwise you are in trouble. There is also something called Whiff Punish, which is you reacting to your opponent pressing a button, find the right distance for his attack to slightly miss, and counter punish that missed attack for a massive combo damage. Muscle memory deals mostly with the continuation of the combos or trying to come up with the most damage combo at the moment, but not much about the neutral game.

Maintaining a lead at 18+ when you are at the top, nothing left to prove and all that money to enjoy and other things to do, while talented teens in their thousands with nothing but time on their hands are drooling in front of their screens for 10 hours a day wishing they were the guy on top, completely hungry and consumed by the idea of being the best, that's a tough position to be in and no wonder these best players come and go so quickly.

I just turned 18 and I started placing well when I turned 17 but just quit with about 1K pr a year later, let's just imagine this, when you start playing fortnite it's usually on a console which sucks to compete on, next you might get a slow pc at 15-16 yo and only when I turned 17 and got a job was I able to afford a pc with a 3070 to run the game well. Now I turn 18 and I'm studying engineering in uni working 2 jobs and have no spare time. I love the game and was ranked top 50 in my country for a while but it's just not worth persuing even though there is nothing I love more than playing fortnite I have 12000 hours played on the game and still love it but chose to quit because of my mental health. and also from age 13-17 man grow in length and are skinny and agile. I'm 18 6ft and 80kg and growing in width, It is so much harder for me to move my arms which are 3 times the size they used to be over my mouse pad than a 13 year old.

the thing is tho. fast paced online gaming is relatively new. the current 30-60 year olds making up the data on the graph never experienced playing online games like we do today. We don't have the data on people who grew up with gaming vs people who didn't because games like fortnite (and other fast paced games that train reaction and look time) are not old enough yet.
maybe in another 10-20 years we can have a look at this topic, but for now the data you referenced is not accurate because there are other variables not discussed or taken into consideration. like obviously an 18 year old that has grown up knowing nothing but technology and games and has been on screens since they were a child, is going to be faster and better at it than a 40 year old who never grew up with them, and never really played games as a child.

I think most things described to genetics and age factors have minimal impact on performance, the main cause is the emotional stress that comes with growing up and society pressures which you described that take hours of training away. It's nice to see someone your age talking about this and it adds credibility. Also idk about fortnite but pro players don't make their money only from tournament winnings, in others games it's only a small portion when you're in a good org

One thing I wanna mention that may have an effect is called “hyper vigilance” it’s a thing your brain does as a response to trauma but I also suspect it has some effect on your look doing latency, like for me (yes I’m 17) I notice more stuff than my duo does in game partly because of that so that may also have an effect on your skill as you get older

The topic is far too complicated that it doesn't even make sense to publish a study on it because it has so much to do with how a person eats or whether the person does sports - these are things that have extreme effects on the reaction time and how quickly you Information is processed and we humans don't all live the same way, so you can only apply this to the majority of the general public who always live unhealthy lives or who only live healthy lives, but these statistics only show the unhealthy general population for the most part and if you look at athletes The prime time is often 30 and if you look at athletes there are enough athletes who are even faster at 30 than younger people who are under 20

Spent about a year and a half playing other games, I just didn't care for it anymore (like. I would play occasionally if a friend asked but not often. Came back and I feel like I'm playing peak performance which I hadn't had since Chapter 2. If you don't enjoy it don't try to improve your skill, you'll be slow to improve even if you're trying. Emotions play a big part.

Most people that retire do it because of changing life goals. Not everyone wants to be a pro, can’t play as much anymore, and some became one purely by accident and just used that to make money for their true careers and aspirations.

Bro i'm 21 and i thought i was gonna become a pro player as well but didn't realize that i wasted alot of years just playing for fun and never got serious about comp fortnite and now i'm 21 thinking about making earnings but the more research i do the more i find out that 21 might be a bit too late to make earnings but in my country there's literally only 1 guy that is a pro and he's 24 now i believe so maybe i can just become the best player in my country....are my reactions time gonna be bad? Can i just start streaming and play casuals my goal is to just earn by playing games and the only reason i'm getting serious about fortnite because that's the only game in which i can get the lowest ping (40-50) i tried PUBG but the lowest ping i get is 100ms so i just gave up....i started this channel when i was only 17 and i just wasted these years just goofing around but now i play creative everyday and trying to become good but everytime i see all these pros are like 15-18 just demotivates me so much and i see myself doing shitty in games just because of that.
😥 But i see alot of older players like reisshub who's like 31 now and Martoz is 26 and i thought he was in his teens but his game is so good so that motivates me again also i have college as well but i don't need a job so rn so i can play after coming home from college. I only have these years to do something because when i complete college i won't have any time for fortnite and i would have to do 9-5 which haunts me I LOVE GAMING AND I CAN'T QUIT IT!

It's because when you turn 18, you tend to prioritise different things, with Fortnite not typically being very high up on that list... There just isn't the time there was as a kid to spend hours a day on the game

I've always referred to reaction time as meaning more "look-doing latency". I know that that latency has significantly increased by watching my old videos of playing MW3.... I would constantly check how many kills I got (how far I'm away from a MOAB), but the scoreboard is only up for a few frames... Lol literally can no longer read it in that timeframe.

When you're younger, your brain is more adaptable and absorbs information more easily due to neuroplasticity, which is most pronounced during childhood. I often think about Mongraal, who at 20 is still highly skilled but perhaps not at his peak anymore, possibly hitting a skill cap. Then there's Ninja, at 33, who has definitely reached a skill cap but can still transfer his abilities to other games effectively.

Imo i dont think its anything to do with degrading because of age, but rather the people who do are just too comfortable. People like bugha, clix and others arent as good now when they were 16/17, probably cause they have so much money that improving isnt necessary and its not a big deal anymore. I think any 18 year old who wants to try out competitive would still have a good chance even if they are starting now.

I grew up in this community and the fighting game community and I defenitely agree with most of your skill or "reaction time" being built up in those prime years but defenitely still sticking till atleast 40-50 . im 20 now (not too old) but my reaction time although a stupid metric has only gone from 163ms average to 172ms average and thats just with just an overall decline in gaming time.

well... yes, when i was 18 ish i could easily 180 headshot someone in Counter Strike. I kinda still have the skill. But not as sharp or something. I think at the age of 17 the body and brain is still learning and connecting some inportant things in the head. And that can make you realy agile. And in the moment focused.
I think my brain focuses on just different things right now. I am so much better at just general strategy. And would 100 percent strategicaly outplay 18 yearolds, who just dont have the brain for it yet. I am 37 :D
Dont play much games though. With practice i still definetly have the skill. But i think nature just works this way, the older you get, and more adult i guess, you tend to go more in the backline away from the frontline and just call the shots. The skill is there, and now it can be combined with tactics... It all does make sense. And 18 year olds still have to have theyr time in the frontline...

I must say I have always hated the genetics argument, from my experience as someone who has ascended the academic ladder to the highest rungs from the lowest bars, the genetics argument is largely always a fill-in-the-gaps explanation. Oh your really good at Art/Science/Video games etc? That must be because you were born that way. Oh you learned a language? Your brain learns languages so easily when your younger you couldn't do that now. Like no, either I worked my ass off to get here, had great mentors or experiences growing up, or came from a rich family. I can do dance, just because I didnt grow up in Ballet class or "Have the right genes" doesnt mean I can't learn to do it as good as, if not better than anybody else. All those reaction time etc arguments are made up by losers who don't want to challenge themselves, or elitists that want to gatekeep their favorite hobby because they are too insecure.

most people as they get older have different responsibilities. The average 30 year old is far more intelligent than the average 16-18 year old. Smarter players can create strategies quicker which should result in more wins. However, my quick strategy when I play an hour a day maybe, can't compete with a 16 year old who plays 10 hours a day. That doesn't account for understanding the game better, knowing the latest meta, cheating, understanding technologies that help with the game, etc

I'm 35 professional at fighting games, MOBAs and FPS and I still have the skill.
There main issue is that alot of us don't have the luxury/luck to game for alot of their adult life.
I've been gaming since I was a toddler and alot of skills i've learned from previous games have transfered into modern games also I have alot of the time to learn something new and git gud at something new.
It's common for a new trending game for it's pros to be younger as the new thing is commonly aimed for that new audience even games I once grew up with must appeal to new generation, while others must tell aging fans that times have changed and you can't always have the old stuff all the time.
I jumped into fortnite around 2022 for dragon ball, before this I didn't like fortnite n was very ignorant towards it. But after I got joked into playing the game I started to understand the appeal of the mechanics to the point ti's not some cringe meme game but a complex fast twitch reflex shooter with some parkour mechanics, building, advantage points, stealth, understanding of the map. this is where it just clicked with me and fortnite became very fun, I'm guilty of prefering modern fortnite ngl but once in a while I do enjoy the retro style of fortnite.
It also helps that I do have a healthy routine to stay healthy mentally and physically.

If anyone wants to go pro in any comp game you need to start early and be at that level by the time you are nearing your 20s more likely by 18 because once you break into your 20s there external factors that start to enter your life such as jobs relationships family issues etc that will distract you from going pro.
And if you miss that boat by the time you are in your 20s if you thought it was hard when your mom was bitching at you to go to bed at 2am in the morning for school the next day wait till you are unsure where you are going to be living or how you will feed your self If your parents kick you out by your 20th bday and even if you have a job you won't be able to make the excuse you need to go home early or miss a day or 2 for practice to your boss.
Not to mention it gets hard to fight off negativity from people if you are not making money from your gaming by then time your in your mid 20s to 30s at that point you really are looking washed out.
I think at this point, if you have millennial parents thar grew up in North america, they probably will understand what you might be trying to do but there's limits to that support and schooling will always beat playing a video game because your parents will not give in hedging that you won't make it pro and u need to have a real back up plan that is more likely to pay off.
If you don't have parents like that then honestly you are fucked and you will need to work 1000% harder if you want to even attempt to pull it off.

I was 11 when i started fortnite and id say my peak was 12-13 with doing triple edits and having insane aim ( on controller ) would average 12-20 kills per game and win 1 in every 3 games . From there it only went down , as the lockdown ended my friends stopped playing fortnite and i too started playing less and less . Now my skills have degraded to almost 0 , mid aim and i dont even edit anymore

tbh i don't think its that deep i don't think it really has to do with age unless you pass over 35 then it might affect u a bit but the reason isn't even hard to figure out why fortnite pros "get worse at 18 years old" is because of life everything after highschool is just a different step in life and everything just becomes complicated to the point of not even having enough time as and adult to try to play.
