That "4th" building material you showed us is actually an upgrade to metal in STW. You can upgrade the strengths of materials in stw, with metal and brick becoming more dark, and wood becoming much more smooth.

I think the biggest change or the greatest skill gap started when you could first cone someone because that was genuinely the first time you could outplay your opponent close range without using weapons. That one play probably brought so many ideas and was the reason we went to build fights, box fights and piece control at an exponential rate.

I heard and read a lot of people slagging fortnite off because of how popular it is. I put playing it off for a few months after getting out but just started this week. It's such a fun game whether solo or teams and I'm getting used to the gun play on solo no build and have been on creative to practice build play and I'm loving learning the meta. It's so good. It was honestly a good move for game as i was never good at building even when i got better in late chapter 2 so now i will play a few matches of Zero Build and then if im feeling luckily jump in to a build match or just play rumble.

Same here, FN buddies would laugh at me when I said a no build mode would be more fun, at least for the casual players. The trajectory of the game where being good at building would become by far the most important skillset within the game, it became more and more clear.
It was quite obvious - spending hours to practice edits, farming materials between fights, high intensity builds. Playing this game was a cognitive overload at its finest, and people were tired af after playing it for couple of hours. Moreover, playing it with high ping, or lower frames, would be also extremely disadvantageous.
Not everyone wanted to become a pro, FN started eating up itself, because without casuals, the pro scene can't exist, but this is a thing most wannabe pro toxic kids and streamers wouldn't understand. Good move by EPIC. Now I can play few no build games, just as I would play some Battlefield or CoD.

But with fortnite players have created something that couldn't even be mentally considered in 2017. Its like how humans cant imagine how space started. Nobody could imagine how building and movement would be used in just a couple years.

Last week I decided to give the game another try, this time queuing into Zero Build and I've been hooked since. I do still want to learn how to build at least a bit, because I'd like to try out Arena. But I'm fine playing Zero Build for now, the game is so much fun.

I'm an old noob playing build modes with my teenage son who's light years ahead of me skill-wise. My advice, is don't jump into Arena (or currently 'ranked mode') straight away - it will just discourage you as pretty much everyone will take you on like you don't matter at all. Start with bots and creative maps, then play in 'non-ranked' mode. Learning building and editing can be fun but the skill gap in Arena will be too much for you to handle. Good luck.

If you go by the outline he provided in the video by first developing the muscle memory to build a wall in reaction to getting shot at it goes a long way to get an upper hand on the opponent. If they are god tier then I recommend building up a ramp like you know what you're doing and they will tend to do the same in return and then run away as fast as you can once they loose sight of you. lol.
I just practiced placing one type of piece defensively and offensively until I could do it instinctively and then added the others as needed from there. After getting the palcements down, go to creative for a few minutes before queing up in BR and practice wall, floor, ramp and cone edits. You don't have to be amazing to take down a pro player, they all tend to be overly aggressive and if you box up and wait for them to come in your box you can tend to win often by using a cone or ramp in your box and editing it out of the way to take a shot as they break the wall, just watch the health bar of the wall/ramp/come/etc and time the shot.
I'm like the guy he mentions on the video, I don't play 8 hours a day. I play for maybe 2 and since Season 5 Chapter 1, the skill's have come slowly but surely

I couldn’t disagree more about them removing or increasing the time between builds. I loved that update, made the game far more thoughtful and tactical and they only had it for a couple of days and so many people moaned they switched it back. Personally I thought that was the best thing they ever did. Turbo building should never have been put in the game, that was the beginning of the end. Changed building from tactical placement of defensive builds to who cam spam more/ who has the better ping.

sadly, right before it was reverted, players started to bypass the change by binding building to scroll wheel so they could continue to spam or literally spam clicking as fast as possible.

Zero Build mode is the only reason I still play Fortnite. I stopped playing in late 2020 because I was good enough at building so that I wasn't in bot lobbies every game, but was not good enough to compete with those player that had mastered the mechanic by spending countless hours each week to practice it.
With building removed, the accuracy and game theory that I have been perfecting for the past 15 years shines through and I am able to compete with even the sweatiest of players, even as a casual who only has time to play a few hours each week.

I'm way too old for Fortnite (shaky hands and slow reflexes) but my son dragged me in and he hates zero build. So, I'm trying to learn to become a better casual gamer (no aspirations to become a pro or anything) but, the skill gap often is crazy big. The skill gap depends on the lobbies you join, so for your first attempts at BR, you'll probably face mostly bots. I remember the first time we played with my son we got 14 wins in a row with an average of 10-20 kills per match. But the moment you start playing against more/less experienced players with game sense and decent mechanics, they pretty much destroy you instantly. I won't deny it - it's discouraging. One thing I can recommend, go to creative practice maps and spend more time there. There are tons of tutorials on YT. Some of the practice maps let you play against tons of bots. For the beginner, might be less discouraging... IMHO, Fortnite build mode is probably the most complex game mechanically that I've seen, and I've been playing shooters since the very first PCs. But it also provides you with tons of stuff to constantly learn and improve as it is not just point and click .

    • @avuci
      @avuci 5 місяців тому +2

the problem is that building in Fortnite is so complicated and deep. and it's purely built by players who have played for years. kind of like rocket league mechanics. the devs probably never saw this coming. which is what makes the game so special. it's a natural skill progression driven by the players drive to get better. it's not some fabricated competitive games. so a tutorial on building won't really help that much

I don't know if it is still relevant to you, but here's my take. As an adult with a wife, two children, a marketing agency to run, and a relatively slow mind when it comes to FN BR, I'm not naturally gifted and no one would peg me for 'next Bugha', and I struggled a lot. For about 2 years I couldn't kill a single real player in BR (zero builds are more forgiving), and, obviously, it was very frustrating. Yes, it was that bad. I just simply 'don't get it' when my son 'just gets it' and learns/improves super-fast. Less than a month ago, when I was fed up with feeling like a total 'cushion' in this game where everyone just kicks me aside, and moves on like I don't exist. In my profession (SEO, digital marketing), I'm among the best in the world, but in FN BR I was a total bottom feeder. Many times I said "I'm done with this s#it! I'm not improving at all" but my son and his teenage buddies have always been encouraging "You'll get there Business... you are getting better Biz". I just enjoy the bonding and team comradery in this game. Also, there's plenty of time for a good giggle, and just having fun around. So, I made a decision to hire a coach and learn the game step by step. With the help of coach Zykoma, it took me less than a month to start feeling comfortable in the game. Two days ago I beat 1v1 in the Pit one of my son's teenage buddies (18:9), who's been casually playing FN BR since Season 1, and is currently grinding towards unreal with my son. I don't want to hijack ReissHub's thread (much respect to Reisshub and his expertise), but I suggest, checking coach Zykoma's videos as well. If you can afford it, go for coaching. For me personally, the two biggest breakthroughs that ACTUALLY catapulted me forward in terms of progress were buying some extra gear (Azeron Cyborg, 200hz monitor and VGN Dragonfly Moba edition mouse) and working with a professional FN BR coach. I've watched tons of educational videos on this channel and many others, and there's a lot of great advice, no doubt. Somehow, for me personally structured, step-by-step approach to practice the right things at the right sequence was necessary. I only regret not doing it earlier. Don't give up, just find the right advice, practice and celebrate small wins, and don't beat yourself up (I know I've been guilty of having very harsh self-talk). If I'm not mistaken, you are young, you won't need two years, I'm sure ;) My son was decent in 2 months on default FN settings, a 60hz monitor and my old laptop, haha.

@@avuci yesterday I accidentally walked in on a PUBG Mobile championship in a mall, and I thought to myself 'Geez, this game is mechanically so ridiculously simple'. Camping, peaking and shooting, that's about it. Master these two things and you are king. I got bored watching the best in the region, seemed to me like they were just camping all the time, and occasionally shooting. Obviously, it's most probably not the case and actual PUBG players wouldn't agree with me, but one thing that I love about FN BR is that it feels like there's never an end to improvement, there's always some new item, new thing to learn. I love progress, improving, getting better, so I'm not giving up, even though most kids are more skilled than old uncle Biz...

I quit in may and i came back some days ago and i was surprised to see that even "mediocre" players in low divisions could predict my moves and counter many of my techniques(that at the time were unknown). Its kind of overwhealming to see that the "high" level of 2 years ago is now below mediocre

At season 5 or 6 I don't remember exactly, editing a wall started being inside the player's pc and confirming the edit is the only one thing that goes to the server, before that update opening the edit menu was going to the server which causes a lot of server lag and delay on editing.
