The love for the late Rutger Gunnarsson in the comments is melting my heart like an ABBA vocal harmony. A true unsung hero that deserves to be way more well known and appreciated. Thanks bassowman for this fantastic playalong and tribute.
What I can't understand is why despite Abba, Rutger was still so hysterically Underrated and relatively unknown! I rate him right up there with Jaco for his unbelievable melodic basslines at a time when bass wasn't really played that way yet!
Because only US/UK-citizens get world famous, with few exceptions. Europe (and Latin America) has so many great jazz-rock-pop musicians, but they are generally unknown in the anglo saxon world.
Bravo Bassowman. you nailed it . Deceptively hard , timing is so critical in Gunnarsson's basslines. You even got the slurred triplets. You look ice cool, but your smile and funky nodding says that you feel it.
It takes a free mind and hearing to aknowledge that the songs of ABBA were written and played AND SUNG by geniuses! Even Bono (of U2) said that in that time it was very uncool to like ABBA but now aknowledges that Bjorn and Benny were one of the best songwriters ever! And he said that the songs are so strong that they will be remembered forever! And I think he's right.
I've loved them since I was 8. I'm grown up now, studied music and it's obvious how great they really were. Many other talented musicians acknowledge them as well. To me, they will always be the greatest pop group of all time.
OMG! I have tears in my Eyes. You do it the right way, you have the Groove. Many people talking about Players like Bernard Edwards from Chic. Unfortunately, Rutger Gunnarsson is an unknown genius. My God, I was so young and already when I heard him (ABBA) the first time, I was thrilled by the bass groove. For me he has played some of the most beautiful and legendary bass figures ever!
Hey! Very, very well done - Rutger Gunnarosson as well as you! Just had the pleasure to visit the ABBA Museum in Stockholm today (my wife and I like it very much) and was once again fascinated by the quality of their studio musicians. I will share your video for my fb friends. Keep on rocking :) !
It's because because here bass line was created as a separate composition embedded within the main song. No effort was spared to make it separate complete melody line only accidentally supporting the main line.
Wow bassowman... that was fantastic!! I watched/listen to it with chickenskin on my arms and the hairs were standing up in my neck... I always said to people around me that this song has one of the best basslines ever played: the little twists and twirls of the notes, the notes that are deliberately NOT being played (the ghostnotes), the timing etc... All charactertistics in this structure of this bassline that make it a masterpiece of music in itself.
Great job on the bass.. Thanks a lot for performing and sharing this.. It really illustrates the individual quality of ABBA´s musicians - all bricks in the ABBA-magic..
Glad you too appreciate the small Pastorius flavour in Rutger's playing here. I though about that too in the early 1980s (as I discovered Weather Report at about the same time this LP came out).
On one of his Super Swede signature basses, no less! Good to see some love for Rutger Gunnarsson in here, a fantastic bassist, and a fantastic tone off this instrument.
i learned more about melody+feel from rutger than anything else.i love all music from clasical to metal i can always take something from his melodic lines.any musician who has problems learning their own bass lines listen 2 abba and listen, your bass will come alive, theory can only take you so far,and speed without feel has no meaning.give him a listen, while they sound simple they are very detailed and tricky..class player and such a gift to bass players no matter your style.thanks for the video
Now and then I come back to watch this video because it really touches me. I would be very happy if I could see it in a higher resolution. Thanks for this beautiful performance!
Even though the music of U2 and ABBA seems miles apart, they both have several things in common: originality, lasting power, great songwriting skills and fantastic singers! Thanks bassowmann, for shining a light on this fantastic track and bassline!
It was always hard to decipher/figure out how it was played. Millions of credits to you, bassowman, to bring it so wonderfully to the forefront. And indeed, as somebody else stated here: a great sneer to the ABBA-bashers!
Importance of bass is such that some highly successful songs rest on very powerful bass lines (Another one bites the dust by Queen, Good Times by Chic and Lessons in Love by Level 42, just to name a few).
Brilliant, as usual... One of the things that amazes me from you the most is your ability to nail the tone of the original recordings. This particular bassline is a great composition and you did it justice. Also, I'm really starting to love this Hagstrom bass. My five stars of today; keep them coming!
Just brilliant, I revisit this vid year after year. The playing skill, the Hagstrom tone, the occasional wry smile knowing you've nailed it 😆 one of my fave basslines, and played so well 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Watching endlessly. Awesome playing. Enjoying your skills, facial expression and body language. You are well into it and it shows. Such a pleasure for the eyes and the ears.
Great bass tone too ! - very, very well played Bassowman - and what a legend the sadly departed Mr Gunnarsson was ( true recognition better late than never) RIP RG.

For sure Rutger is an institution here! Much love man!! ♥️♥️🇪🇸🇪🇸
I'm 11 years late and I don't even know if you're still here, but man, you did an amazing job on that bass line.
I could listen to this all day.
+1
So could I!
yes, Mike Watson IS pretty good, could almost play for ABBA
I should
I never realised how bloody funky Abba's basslines are until I started listening to these bassline videos on UA-cam.
That was the greatness of
Rutger Gunnarsson. You think this is great? Listen to Dancing Queen, now that's both funky and intricate.
Listen to them with headphones, if you don’t already. The textures are amazing. 🇸🇪
What I can't understand is why despite Abba, Rutger was still so hysterically Underrated and relatively unknown! I rate him right up there with Jaco for his unbelievable melodic basslines at a time when bass wasn't really played that way yet!
McCartney calls you!
Because only US/UK-citizens get world famous, with few exceptions. Europe (and Latin America) has so many great jazz-rock-pop musicians, but they are generally unknown in the anglo saxon world.
Most were probably distracted by the ladies' legs...
@Won Sik Ahn Pardon?
Not too many folks could figure out these notes, let alone replicate the feel. Stellar tribute to an under-rated muso and song.
Awesome, just awesome! Big thumbs up! This is one of the greatest bass lines in musical history. Deep bow to the late Rutger Gunnarsson.
RIP, Rutger. The music lives on.
Bravo Bassowman. you nailed it . Deceptively hard , timing is so critical in Gunnarsson's basslines. You even got the slurred triplets. You look ice cool, but your smile and funky nodding says that you feel it.
EXCELLENT! Great choice of bands to cover bass from, Abba's bass lines were absolutely kick ass.
A bass line just could not get any better than this!
Who would have known that such an innocent pop song would have such an intricate bass line behind it, wow. Nice job breaking it down too.
It takes a free mind and hearing to aknowledge that the songs of ABBA were written and played AND SUNG by geniuses! Even Bono (of U2) said that in that time it was very uncool to like ABBA but now aknowledges that Bjorn and Benny were one of the best songwriters ever! Spot on 10 years later and ever more!
Who cares what Bono says? Abba's greatness doesn't need acknowledement from Bono or any other has-been.
RIP Rutger Gunnarsson
Amen, he gave so much!
He did! Doesn't get what he deserves!
This song has one of the most beautiful bass tracks
One of my favourite bass lines ever😊

WOW!!!! never thought that bassline could be so beautiful. I can listen to it over and over. Thank you!!! R.I.P Rutger Gunnarsson
I do listen to it over and over.
Luv your comment about Rutger! He was amazing!
He was amazing ☺️
It's because because here bass line was created as a separate composition embedded within the main song. No effort was spared to make it separate complete melody line only accidentally supporting the main line.
Nice job! The bass line jumped out at me immediately when I first heard this song.
Watching this in 144p makes it look like just one thick bass string... he-he... by the way nice job!
One of Rutger's best.
Same here!
I keep watching this over and over again!
So am I. Cant¨t get enough.
BEST BASSIST IN THE WORLD: GUNNARSON, RUTGER............ HEAVENLY MELODIC BLISSFUL BASS TUNES
Wow bassowman... that was fantastic!! I watched/listen to it with chickenskin on my arms and the hairs were standing up in my neck...

what a beautiful song
Fyi - He is using a Hagström-bass that was used on the albums
I've liked this bass line forever. Nicely played.
12 years late but this is an early Christmas present for me, and is going to get me through a second Covid winter. Thanks for cheering me up :)
Love the smile at the end when you're turning the camera off, knowing you pulled it off. Ace work.
Fabulous one of abba`s best songs
And one of the most underrated!
Brilliant bassline, beautifully played! Many thanks.
My favorite ABBA bass line. Thanks for posting!
That's an insane tone, let alone a great rendition. Surely not purely the sound of the bass!!
Simply splendid! Rutger would be proud!
Great job on the bass.. Thanks a lot for performing and sharing this.. It really illustrates the individual quality of ABBA´s musicians - all bricks in the ABBA-magic..
12 years later and I'm only just watching this now. Nailed it
Ohhhhhh nice, the Rutgar sound indeed!
Glad you too appreciate the small Pastorius flavour in Rutger's playing here. I though about that too in the early 1980s (as I discovered Weather Report at about the same time this LP came out).
Incredible job, man, so detailed. Super
Incredible feel, swing and precision
Rutger was a great bassist. I'm a guitarist, but when I'm listenig to your bass playing, I wish I could play bass like you do.

It's my favo(u)rite among all bass lines of ABBA songs.
