    Architect field buddy is a cheaper alternative especially if you make your own sheath.But even with their good kydex sheath it'll save you about $100. And they have magnacut, 3v, s35vn, and 1095, not to mention every handle material you could want, and a lifetime warranty. I got their 3v 6.5 inch a while ago, and it was $170 without the sheath. Fantastic knife.

      I also appreciate the Architect knives solution. Still, if money is not your first consideration, why not go for a Reiff knife if it fits within your defined parameters? They are proven to the point of being nearly beyond reproach in quality and efficacy. I priced out an Architect knife for myself and it ended up being about the same as it would be for a Reiff. It's a personal preference thing to me. I have two Reiffs and will probably buy an F5, but I will also likely opt for and Architect soon too.

      @@brettmorrical6978 One could rationally argue the reverse is opposite: If all things and price are equal, why wouldn't you go with the Architect to customize it to your exact preferences (which include scale material, colors/patterns, etc).

    That 5" Reiff, with the high saber grind, Micarta scales, and steel selection, literally hits everything on my checklist for what I would consider to be the perfect knife. I hope these guys have a booth at the Atlanta Blade Show so I can put my hands on one of these. Thanks for the rundown.

    I prefer the flat/high saber grind knives that I use for hunting. I also use them for my camping chores as well and work great. I have several scandi knives and I found them limited due to chisel type grind. Reiff is great knife but here in Australia you need to take a mortgage to get one. The F4 is $AU700, for that price I can get 8 knives that will last me a lifetime.

    When it comes to grinds I’m choosing full flat almost every time .Full flat ground knives outperform Scandi ground knives in every single metric except wood carving . Saber grinds kind of bridge the gap between the two . The only time I reach for a scandi is when I’m doing a lot of wood carving .

  • @eyeofthetiger4184
    @eyeofthetiger4184 9 місяців тому +2

    G'day Aaron, I am well aware of Reiff, fantastic designs from what I've seen ....... at a price ; )
    Price aside though; the term "camp knife" to me = car camping, or at least not far from one's vehicle; because; I'm far more likely to do more carving and general utility with a 4 to 5 incher, (of whatever grind and steel), hey even an Opinel is good for much basic LD stuff ....... and I'll have a shipload of options to play with for HD wood processing chores.
    Hiking deep into the sticks though; .... different equation. What some might consider a primary, "survival" knife around the 5 to 6 inch mark, I consider a secondary to a big effective walloper of some description : )
    And for me thats where a scandi stays behind too, sure a sharp "anything" will do the business, but given a choice, a sabre, or "sabre-vex", is far more versatile I reckon. cheers Duke.

    Very nice, I don´t mind the size though for carving tasks a smaller blade like the Reiff 4 is probably more useful. But for the price I´d expect a dangler included and the sheath wetformed out of the box. Still I´d love to win one. :-D The CPM 3V Ursus 45 at DLT is 255$. Slightly smaller and thinner handle though. The Reiff guarentee is neat.

    Great company, great knives. Go figure. I'm so glad they went with a higher grind.
    As far as a 4" vs 5" Scandi, just due to the nature of the grind, I think I'd stick with the 4" assuming I can't get the level of finesse and control from the 5" variant that I can with the 4" blade. They are almost two completely different knives. I just can't imagine the 5" feeling and being able to operate the same way as the 4. I've been wrong before, but only once. :))

  • @kentfreier5705
    @kentfreier5705 9 місяців тому +2

    I'm not the pro you are, but how I found out about the differences was to slice an onion. The Scandi can't cut thin slices. It separates as it goes. The Saber grind or a flat grind can slice the onion thinly. The differences became very apparent to me. Not that slicing onions is important, it just showed the differences. Therefore, I think the Scandi is good on wood, as it separates the pieces well, not precision thin, like feather sticks. The Saber is for food prep. Please let me know what you think about that conclusion.

      Great question. That’s a tough one. I would say that if you want more “tactical” applications and more lashing options with the sheath then the Demko is the way to go. If you think you’re gonna be using it 90% of the time camping in Bush crafting well then the F5 is going to feel a lot more comfortable in the hand for a lot of different task.

    First I love your channel!
    I must however disagree with your statement that “Scandi” is not as good as “Saber” for splitting wood!!!
    Scandi by its very nature is a “wedge”, which blows wood apart!!
    Also “Scandi” is more durable than “saber” because there is more thickness behind the edge!
    My assertion is based on 1000’s of pieces of wood processed using both grinds!
    However I do agree that “Saber” is more slicy with food, simply because of thinner blade behind the edge.
