      Does the cartridge draw water inside it for lubrication ?

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily  2 роки тому

      @@lito11111940 Interesting question.
      No it does not. The cartridge is sealed towards the water side.
      I would assume the cartridge has plastic or brass bearings/bushings, both are self lubricating. Water is more of a coolant rather than lubricant. Also the cartridge manufacturer does not know what you are pumping. In our case it is a mixture of water and corrosion inhibitor in other cases it may be water and boiler antifreeze.
      But there is a big chance that some debris may be floating in there since the boiler is an open system, such debris would do just the opposite of a lube.

      @@RMTFamily Thank you very much, I appreciate you fast response. The cartridge that pulled from the pump was filled with water. I was sure that it wasn't right, I wanted to ask just to make sure. On a forum someone posted water lubricates the bearings. God knows in the strange world of plumbing. I have some experience but have miles to go.
      Again thank you, very much appreciated.

    Thanks for video, I have to replace the pump tomorrow, my boiler is making the same noise. I think I will buy the whole pump, remove the old cartridge and swap in the new cartridge and have the motor assembly as spare parts.

      Thank You for watching. Good idea this way you have a spare motor just in case. We have a total of 4 pumps, two of them started to make the noise, the other two are still going but I suspect they will need the cartridge replaced sooner than later. 🙂

    I priced the pump ……motor cartridge ….the cheapest was more than the entire pump…..go figure…..

      It is weird how that goes. A year from now it may be the other way around again. One would think a cartridge would always be cheaper. Not sure how that works, but I guess you're going to buy a whole new pump this time and keep the old one for spare parts😉
      Thank you for watching👍

    Hi, where do you buy your replacement cartridges? The ones I see for sale, aren't much cheaper than the whole pump. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi, You will have to do some shopping around. Prices vary all the time. And yes you will find pumps just about the same price as cartridges at times. If currently pumps are about the same then just go for a whole pump. Keep the old pump and keep looking for cartridges every so often, and you may find one at a reasonable price that makes sense to buy and rebuild the old pump at that time. This way you have a spare pump around.

    Lots of trouble with the oring? The secret is that the oring profile is not perfectly round. One side is slightly flatter. Flip it and try again.

    My pump keeps getting hot and I have to bleed the air from it so you think if I buy a new Carthage that’ll fix this problem

      The pumps do get pretty warm and if your circulating hot water they get hot. But if you have air in there than you have air in the system and need to bleed the system. Best place to bleed is at the highest point of the system. If it is a heating loop you can also install automatic bleeders. The cartridge needs replaced only when it makes unusual loud noises or fails to run completely.

    Anybody know why the Taco replacement kits include both a round and a square edged ‘O’ ring?

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily  3 роки тому +2

      Not sure. But I assume that some of the Taco pumps were designed for round and others for square edge seal. So you would use whichever type was installed.

    I’ve had problems with both the round and square ‘O’ ring replacements on a Taco 008 pump. The gasket apparently shifts out of position when pressurized. But in both cases, I’d lubed the ring slightly with silicon grease. On rewatching this and other videos, I don’t see any silicon grease. I wonder if the gaskets need that bit of friction to stay seated. Maybe third try will be the charm.

      I only use grease to hold an O-ring in place if it does not stay in the groove by itself during installation. Even then I just use enough to hold it in place, sometimes just in two spots.
      I would have thought even greased the would stay in place.
      Good Luck. Third time will be a charm! 😉

    Price of the cartridge is almost the price of the pump.....may be easier to replace the entire pump.....

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily  3 роки тому

      I noticed that prices seem to go up and down on pumps and cartridges quite a bit, you may be able to obtain a whole pump at about the same price. But that said, there is no wear parts in the rest of the pump and replacing the whole pump also requires the seals on the flanges as well as the electrical wiring going to it replaced. It's much easier to just replace the cartridge. There are other issues you can run into if replacing the whole pump, I experienced some of those issues when I replaced the whole pump on my boiler as you can see in this video: ua-cam.com/video/JG9bpBqNgO8/v-deo.html

    Some idiot is going to do this with the power on cause dude never told then to turn off the power.

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily  3 роки тому +1

      You’re right I did not mention to turn the power off. If somebody pulls the motor off the worst that can happen is the rotor is spinning at that point one would know to turn the power off for sure. In my case the pumps are not hardwired, they plug in and as visible in the video the cord is unplugged with motor on the table when I replace the cartridge. But I guess you’re right there is some idiot out there that can get the impossible done.
