2021 Tesla Model Y Review. Model Y vs Model 3. Is Model Y better or just different?
We finally got a chance to drive a Model Y. It is a used 2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range with around 45,000 miles on it. We have it for 10 days and take it to Whistler BC on vacation with us. This gives us a good idea of this electric cars capabilities, with the three of us along with luggage on this about 1500 mile trip. Here is what we think about the Model Y.

We got the EVBASE running boards for our Rivian R1S where they were desperately needed to get in and out of the Rivian easy. Now EVBASE also has running Boards for the Cybertruck. The Cybertruck overall is easy to get in and out as it lowers way further than the Rivian's do. But frequently it is in a higher setting for trailers or off roading and some other times. Its Berlin plant has made quite a stockpile. But auto overproduction is affects all makers and even the most patriotic VW buyer is looking at them same same cars out of its plant in Europe. With Elon got it down to 100 man hours to assemble one model Y, VW needs 300 hrs for their base models. I was hoping they would refresh the model X, given the rhd version had been sold out for ages.

      @@LawpickingLocksmith Tesla sure builds cars very efficient. They got rid of the RHD in S and X due to the limited production of these models, not very efficient to build making these more expensive. Not sure if they ever go back to build them RHD. I think Tesla’s focus is on going to a lower priced car, robotaxy and there was a third something under cover at last meeting, which may be the Roadster. You may have to settle for LHD. It just slightly inconvenient 😂. Can’t imagine how much that sucks when everything is on the wrong side.

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily 5 днів тому

      You can. The front bracket is over the jack point. You have to loosen the two nuts on the clamp for the board and remove the 13mm and 10mm head bolts holding the bracket to the truck, then you can slide the bracket out of the way. This can be done easy with the supplied tools. No need to remove the boards.

      To be a bit more exact, it takes anywhere from 1 hour to 1.5 hours to charge from 0% to 100%. A 20% to 80% charge takes about 30 minutes. The Bolt only has a 66kWh battery pack. These charging times are basically the same for older Model S! The Model S charges just a bit faster than the Bolt but has a larger Battery.

    You never said how much time you wasted on the total trip charging this thing. None of these types of videos ever do. Sure frequent bathroom breaks are a fact of life when you hit a certain age. Believe me I am there. However, it does not take 35 minutes, 45 minutes or even an hour+ to empty your bladder.

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily 7 днів тому

      In my videos when I arrive at the Supercharger I usually give the stats and show the time on the screen and then I do it again when leaving the Supercharger. I also show the time the truck estimates to charge. As an example the first stop was Butte MT after a two hour 150 mile drive we had to charge for 20 minutes. Getting the coffee and bathroom stop took all of that for the three of us. There was no time wasted😉. Usually when you arrive with this truck people come from everywhere and want to see it and ask questions. Yes bathroom and coffee doesn't take very long but showing the truck having interesting conversations with people from all walks of live takes time. Thus we usually charged more than needed to continue to the trip. Unfortunately in Montana we don't have to many Superchargers yet, like in other places. So even with charging more than needed we can't usually skip a Supercharger. And because we have more than needed we arrive with a higher SOC at the next one and that can lead to slower charging (less kW). In general the Cybertruck requires about 20 to 25 minutes charging for a two hour drive. This has been my experience so far. Not sure yet how it will be in winter with extreme cold. Winter is coming so stay tuned for those winter videos.

    There goes the Supercharger network...

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily 7 днів тому

      Why? There are not enough "other" EV's out there to affect Tesla owners charging experience. The huge amount of Superchargers added to the network is ahead of the amount of non Tesla cars added. Many Chevy Bolt don't even have a DC fast charge port. Allowing others to charge at the Supercharger network also creates revenue to build more Superchargers. The way the Tesla app is designed it will bring more people to switch to Tesla, which again brings more money for more Superchargers. And just hanging out with Tesla owners and seeing the throughput of Teslas at Superchargers will bring more people to Tesla and again the network keeps growing like that. The majority of EV drivers don't even DC fast charge. They just charge at home or work for daily driving.

    I was wondering if that was your old Bolt but saw the interior and knew better. The advent of using the supercharger is great as an alternative to other places. They also seem to be consistently more operational. Granted, I have only used DC charges twice since I bought my Bolt in Dec but would like to look into more road trips. I feel a NACS to CCS adapter is going to be a necessity anyway since it sounds like NACS will be the standard. I am glad you said something about a non-monthly account option because I heard you had to sign up for the monthly plan. I did set up my Chevy app to use them. I kind of feel like I may have to get the adapter quick since I could test a week from Friday if I want. I want to thank you for all the EV information you have posted. I really love my Bolt. I would have to say in hindsight I should've went with the heated seats/steering wheel option.

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily 7 днів тому

      Tesla Superchargers have an uptime of 99.9%! In over 6 years of driving Tesla I only experienced one location that was completely down. But if I would have looked at the Tesla Navigation at home, I would have know already as it was clearly marked as closed. You are probably right that eventually the adapter will be necessary, but that is at least a decade away I think. Tesla's V4 Superchargers seems to have the Magic Dock build in, no adapter needed. Chargepoint also started to install a similar adapter type like Tesla. Currently car maker have not switched to installing NACS yet. This will start with some next year. But with the adapter you can use most V3 Superchargers right now. With Electrify America the monthly plan is $7 now. If you go on a road trip it maybe worth to pay that for one month as you could save more than $7 in charging cost. I have done it before and it worked out in my favor to sign up with EA for one month. Now Superchargers are cheaper, at least in Montana, so instead of using EA you possibly could just use Superchargers without the monthly fee and still save over using EA. But it requires the adapter. You better hurry to get an adapter. I'm sure there are many that want one right now. Use Tom's discount links if you get an aftermarket adapter:Use the "STATEOFCHARGE" coupon code to save on your NACS to CCS1 Adapter: Save 10% on the A2Z Typhoon Pro adapter: a2zevshop.com/?ref=lsh8xAcYPb... Surprised you like the Bolt. I had 2 GM built cars in my life. An Opel Kadett and later a Holden Commodore with the 3.8l V6. Everybody was relieved when GM left Australia with a few freaks still dabbling in HSV gas guzzlers. Out Electric Highway that runs the East Coast is neither cheap nor kept up well let alone not Tesla friendly. Also mounting bikes here is rather a nightmare with compliance. I wonder if Montana is suitable to have some bifacel panels to get some of your own power?

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily 7 днів тому

      We put almost 20k miles on the Bolt and the only thing that failed was the radios😂. There is not really to much GM involvement in the Bolt, at least not until they had to have an Bolt EUV. That island you're on is just to far from everything😉😂. I thought Montana is behind but we are way ahead of Australia. In the US you can mount anything on a car you want. Doesn't matter. Unless it falls off and someone gets hurt. Compliant or not people just do it and nobody says anything. In regards to bike carriers, the law requires the taillights and license plate to stay clearly visible. One can interpret that in many ways😂. Not sure if that is good or bad!? I think bifacial panels would do great here. Unless one has a tracker, panels are really never facing the sun. I think a mix of panels would be best overall. Bifacial panels installed vertically, facing east and west and regular panels facing south would work pretty good. Or even use bifacial panels to face south, because they would pick up the reflection from the snow in the winter. It maybe a matter of price. One maybe able to gain more with bifacial panels but ROI maybe way longer. Do you got solar?

      @@adobo1976 The price was not really "promised". I checked out other trucks (ICE), and could not find one that when similar equipped is less money. Most of them can't be bought with all the stuff the CT offers. The off road capabilities are great without needing any modifications. Most people will never need 500 mile range. For the few there maybe an option one day. A larger battery pack gives more range but makes the truck less off road capable being even heavier. Without a trailer behind it the truck's range is impressive for the battery size. Smaller battery and bigger truck than the Rivian but same range. For me it works great as I tow usually within a 50 mile radius. As technology improves there probably will be a 500 mile range truck some day.

      @RMTFamily 8 днів тому

      @@snapper69996666 Sorry but you couldn’t be more wrong when you talk about EV’s. The truck towing a trailer makes a trip longer due to longer charging times. But when driving a car you only stop about every 2 hours for 10 to 20 minutes. A 1000 mile trip we did to Las Vegas in one day didn’t take any longer than it would have in a gas car. And it was not stressful, we got there and were not all worn out because we stopped about every two hours stretched our legs, went to the bathroom, maybe grabbed a coffee, had lunch etc. In any event the charging was faster than we were. Still waiting on coffee the notification came that the car is ready to go for the next two hour stretch. At lunch it even charged to full and I had to go move it before we were done eating. More frequent stops is better for your health and decreases total travel time with an EV. Driving longer stretches without stopping is unhealthy, makes you tired and stressed and at the end you maybe a few minutes faster but completely worn out.

I didn’t look at the navigation that clearly stated the charger is out of service, before I even started my trip. For people with other EV’s that require a CCS plug for fast charging, it is a bit more difficult. There are fewer of those and they are from different networks or even belong to a store or gas station. For the different networks you need different apps or RFID cards. Only very few have a credit card reader. Then it depends on the network or owner how well these chargers are maintained and how quickly they are repaired. Obviuously you are pretty clueless about EV's and their costs. I'm glad you found this channel, because here you can see what really is possible, not FUD. Traveling and charging on the road is in general 10% cheaper than gasoline. Charging at home is 90% cheaper. The Cybertruck can tow about 150 miles on a full charge, that is about a two hour drive, and that is when everyone is supposed to stop and stretch anyway. Now the truck takes about 30 minutes to charge, but a Tesla Model 3 takes only about 5 to 15 minutes to charge. And we have not even talked about all the other savings an EV has over ICE vehicles.

    • @adan7182
      @adan7182 9 днів тому

      I’ve owned two Teslas that’s how I knew the technology wasn’t ready for a truck. A 100% charge (which isn’t good for the battery) 150 miles for a light load in perfect weather. Not exactly the definition of a truck for most people. I like the video, don’t get too upset. I just don’t believe it’s a practical vehicle. There’s a lot of excuses for its shortcomings that I find comical. We haven’t even began to go into all the panel gaps and the poor build quality of your truck. Driving that thing in serious winter conditions will also destroy the range. It’s a niche item. Not a mainstream truck that’s going to replace a F150.

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily 9 днів тому

      100% charge is not a problem for a battery if the vehicle is driven within an hour or two of reaching full charge. No harm, no more degradation, nothing is done. Even people that have not followed that rule have not experienced excessive degradation. For most people a 1/2ton truck is a commuter/daily driver not a long distance towing vehicle. It makes a great work truck too as it has enough range for towing a work trailer without charging throughout the day for many contractors. I'm one of them! Shortcomings? Specify these shortcomings. Range is not one of them since most 1/2ton trucks never drive that far daily and for the once in a while when you visit Grandma you have to charge on the road and maybe loose a few minutes compare to a ICE truck, that is not a shortcoming because you make all that time up by not going to get your regular and expensive oil changes, tune-ups and repairs that all ICE vehicles have. Panel gaps? It is not 2018 anymore when Tesla was ramping production on the Model 3. Our Cybertruck has no panel gap issues and all those that I've seen don't either. Panel gaps in "production" Cybertruck is not an issue. Explain the poor build quality. Without owning one you can't even judge build quality. You can't judge build quality based on videos you maybe watching from pre-production models. Driving in serious winter condition will not affect the truck more than any other EV. And if you watch all the EVC winter driving videos on our channel you will see that there is no affect on daily driving and very limited change on road trips. It's not a niche product. The more people will see how capable this truck is what it offers for the money the more people want one. Yes there are a few hick-ups in the first series of truck, just like with any vehicle that is brand new, not built on a previous chassis. But unlike legacy car makers, Tesla doesn't wait a model year to improve the vehicle, they continuously improve as changes are needed. This truck will in a few years take a chunk of the truck market share. You certainly right it will not completely replace the F 150! Many people will buy Ford's electric F 150 Lightning instead of the Cybertruck. I just met one of those people today. He got the F 150 Lightning because they were almost giving away and he needed a truck now and couldn't wait until his Cybertruck reservation turns into an order in a year or two. Stick with our channel so you can see how the Cybertruck really does, we have real live videos and will be driving it in the serious cold winter here in Montana too. And who knows maybe I'm completely wrong, but I doubt it. In any event thank you for watching.👍

Majority of EV's obviously were Teslas, but seen Hyundai Kona EV, Ionic 5, Kia EV6, VW ID4, Cadillac Lyric, multiple models of electric Mercedes, Rivian, Ford Mustang Mach e and F150 Lightning and many more. No China EV's.

    Mike I was in Breezewood PA trying to use a Rivian charger for my chevy bolt ,it didn't work.....any Ideas why? (it looked like a regular CCS plug)

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily Місяць тому

      @@wayne1559 You’re right it is a regular CCS plug. Unfortunately Rivian that is supposed to open their network to all brands, is a little slow. I don’t even know if they actually opened any of their chargers to other brands yet. When I plugged into a Rivian charger with the Bolt it showed “only for Rivian vehicles” on the display after a couple minutes. Across the street at Travelers Oasis is a Tesla Supercharger that is open to non-Tesla vehicles. This one does require you to have an adapter. Then you can activate it from the Tesla app.

    Sooner or later it is going to be cold up your way. How high is the snow going to be?

      @@LawpickingLocksmith The higher the better! I would love to have 6 feet here. But I probably have to live with about 1 to 2 feet. It’s definitely not as cold as it used to be and thus snow doesn’t hang around to build up high anymore.

    Super impressive. Could using a pallet jack make this easier?

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily Місяць тому

      @@masterofnone7876 Thank you. A pallet jack would only work on a flat solid surface. You would have to stack multiple pallets on top of each other since the end where the hydraulics are on the pallet jack would under the car most likely. That would the require the car to be raised much higher. A pallet jack can only lift a pallet about 6 to 8 inches of the ground, this may not be sufficient in this case. Two low profile transmission jacks would maybe be another option, but also requires a flat solid surface. For me this was the easiest solution with the equipment I already had. Certainly other ways are possible depending on the situation. Thank you for watching👍

    I know this is an older video, but did you have the MCU 1 or had you already done the upgrade to MCU2? I have a 2013 Tesla Model S P85 with MCU1 and am wondering if i need BOTH MCU2 and this TPMS upgrade in order to see psi per wheel. This is a "new" car for me and trying to move to 19" wheels and need to know what to do about new TPMS sensors.

    • @RMTFamily
      @RMTFamily Місяць тому

      Hi, This car had and still has the MCU 1. No need to upgrade to MCU2 to see the tire pressures. Just have to retrofit to the Continental TPMS. Tesla introduced the Continental TPMS with the pressure read out several years before the MCU2 came out.
