All depends on what your going for. There is no hard set rule for portrait work. You can make a good portrait from a 14mm or a 600mm Personally I stick with the traditional focal lengths 35mm and 85mm but have occasionally used a 135mm as. But the one thing they all have in common is fast 1.8 primes
