    When I got my budgie Indi, unfortunately he was weaned onto seeds. I knew this wasn't an adequate diet, so after he'd settled in I made him chop and would mix it with seeds to entice him to try it. He would always eat the seeds and not the veggies... I also offered him lots of different leafy greens which he would nibble on, but he could never actually break through the leaf! I did teach him to eat broccoli as he was bonded with me, and I ate some in front of him so he tried it! I was very proud aha.
    My other budgie at the time, Storm, loved eating a variety of veggies, herbs and some fruit... Indi learned to copy him and did eat a little but still couldn't quite figure out he has to bite THROUGH the veggie to actually eat it..😂 I mixed some seeds with quinoa, and he picked some of the seeds out but didn't eat the quinoa! I was disappointed because quinoa is expensive and cooked it up and everything aha.
    The only things he consistently eats other than seed is native Australian seeds from my garden, which are obviously better, and also just green grass seeds!
    Now that Storm has unfortunately passed away, Indi has stopped eating veggies completely! He won't even eat broccoli anymore, he seems to forget he used to eat it, silly birdie! I have been making chop for him and mixing it with seeds every day, but he just doesn't eat it! It's so frustrating, I know it's a long process and I will keep trying, but he's literally the fussiest budgie I've had yet! Storm would go crazy for anything green!

      Hey there,
      It certainly sounds like you go to lots of effort to give a good diet to your little ones! Have you considered sprouting the seeds? It's a good way of making them a little healthier for fussy eaters! Herbs and flowers are also awesome!
      If you get a moment check out my video on herbs and my partner (BirdNerdSophie's) videos on sprouting and how to get your parrot to eat veggies! They may be useful, although it looks like you do lots right already!

      @@TheParrotTeacher Ahh, yes I have considered it and done lots of research... but I just haven't gotten around to trying it, I don't know why! I'll have to try asap!
      Storm loved herbs, he ate parsley, coriander, rosemary, basil, mint, and he tried sage too but didn't like it. Indi did try mint when Storm was eating it but he hasn't eaten it at all recently

    Hello there! First of all thank you SO much for all your informative videos, I just adopted a 4 month old green cheek conure and I’m trying my very best to provide the best care for her!
    Her breeder told me to provide: Fruit and vegetables in the morning, which she eats very happily!
    But also told me to leave in her cage at ALL times two bowls, one with pellets and one with a seed mix. What should I do instead? 😢 I’m very lost and I really want to give her the best diet I can!!

      @TheParrotTeacher  Рік тому +2

      Hey there, thanks for the kind comment!
      So fruit and veg in the morning is good (although be cautious how much fruit you provide) you can also provide sprouted and soaked seeds along with fresh herbs too!
      I’d disagree with the always two bowls thing though. Food should always be available but we provide our fresh in the morning and swap it out for a dry mix in the afternoon!
      We don’t think pellets are an essential part of a parrots diet and I have videos exploring that topic on the channel!

    Hi I would love to get some advice from you, I've recently rescued a cockatiel from bad conditions and has been fed nothing but seed his whole life and is about 3 years old... I have been trying my best to get him to eat his vegetables but do you have any advice for me to get him to eat vegetables? Everyday I have tried so far but he seems to want to starve himself when veg is in his cage and I have also tried mixing some seed in with the veg chop but still doesn't want to eat it! I understand vegetables are key for a healthy diet and really want him to eat them but he refuses. Any advice would be strongly appreciated 🙏🏻

      Hey Frances,
      It can be tough converting rescues on to seed but it is possible!
      My fiancé Sophie has a great video on her channel (link in description and my channel page) about helping parrots eat their veggies that will help you!
      I’d also recommend trying herbs and flowers with them along with offering veg in different ways!
      You could also try soaked and sprouted seeds to transition him!

    Hi David, I wanted to ask your opinion about something. Recently my avian vet told me I shouldn't offer any more seeds to my cockatiel, not even for training. This is because he was on an all-seed diet for the first 12 years of his life and his liver isn't completely healthy. I only do one 5 minute training session per day where he only gets a little millet. I feel bad going against my vet's advice but it keeps him so motivated to do his training! Is there another healthier reward I could try?

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Julia,
      We don't tend to go against vets advice, so I wouldn't disagree with him if he says his health will be improved by restricting seed.
      Advice wise, you could try a treat hierarchy test with your little guy. See if he is potentially motivated by things like dried fruit, herbs or certain types of vegetables. Cockatiels tend to be most motivated by seed, but one of ours; Fish will sometimes train for a little banana!
      If you do want to continue giving millet, make sure you only give the tiniest amount, like break off a bud and let him have one bite of it per behaviour. This will reduce the risks. You could even try sprouting the millet to reduce some of the fat content!
      Something else just occurred, you could try nuts. Although I'd be selective as to which ones as they can be as unhealthy as seeds!
      An out there idea Sophie just reminded me of is peas too! All our parrots love them! Just cooked or thawed standard garden peas!

    My cockatiel doesnt eat veg unless its been through a blender and has a teaspoon of seed mixed in.
    The thing that irks me is the prices of seed. I switched my bird to tidymix because the ones he was on before tripled in price within 3 months.

      Hey there,
      That's a good plan! You're basically making chop! Adding a little seed to help diet conversion can be so helpful.
      They are expensive, it's one of the argument I don't understand from those owners who have all seed diets for their birds : " It's cheaper!"...it really isnt!

    What breaks my mind is the people who say they feed only seed to their parrots, and they live 30 years. This was a cockatiel. Maybe they were just a liar. Who knows.
    My birds don't care for fruit. Buddy will nibble on banana chips, but I don't want him to have much of it, cause they are so sweet.
    I always recommend sprouting for people who are on all seed diets who never shut the hell up about their birds never wanting anything else help help help. They of course tried nothing, or did it for 2 days then gave up, cause oh well. I never understand why people ask for help when they never take it. Just hopen someone else will agree with how stupid they are I guess. Plenty of stupid to go around luckily for them!.... Can you tell I am getting sick of parrot chat groups?
    At least some good stuff in this channel! To bad you cant make UA-cam take down all the shit bird channels that show nothing but wrong info, dated info, or seriously dangerous info.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 роки тому +2

      It does happen! But yes a good diet is much better for them!
      Also sensible. Again it's like the seed, a little in moderation is fine but too much can lead to hyperactivity (like a toddler on sweets lol)
      Sprouting/herbs seem to be the ultimate conversion tools for getting parrots onto veggies or at least onto a better diet. Sadly that's always going to be the way. We live in a quick fix world, so if it isn't easy or quick then it's often not worth doing!
      Well according to my latest troll my channel is one of the worst for info and is just like all the others/worse lol!

    • @angsfeatheredfriends
      @angsfeatheredfriends 3 роки тому +1

      I quit every parrot group / discord / reddit I have been in now (I am much happier now for it). I seriously just hate un educated bird people. I think people just go to them hoping someone will validate how stupid their choices are, or look for free vet care.
      It is sorta hell trying to find good parrot recourses online. 90% of them are so out of date, or spouting their own holier than thou gospel and wont listen to anyone. I spent months looking up info. Weeding out what wasn't correct was the hardest part. Most people do not want to put in that time or energy into their own lives, let alone some pet.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 роки тому +2

      Definitely true. It's always so useful to do research before getting a parrot. Makes things so much easier!
      Also similar for us An. Sophie still belongs to a couple as some of the groups are horrid. Not just for dangerous or outdated advice but just for abuse if you dare disagree.
      Finding parrot courses is also v.tough. Me and Sophie want to do some more but they just don't exist. I'd really love to do a degree in the animal welfare field to expand my knowledge but the money just isn't there for that! So we stick to reading lots, practicing hands on techniques and attending seminars where we can (once covid settles)
