  • We explore the 19th-century Lyceum movement, a decentralized public lecture circuit where some of America's greatest thinkers earned their livings. In some ways, the burgeoning world of rogue academics and independent creators today feels like the old lyceum network. But in other ways, it pales in comparison. What are the current impasses and what needs to be built to unleash another great lyceum movement?

Thank you so much for this! I live in New England, and many towns still have these old buildings which were the local "Lyceum".

This caught my eye bc I’ve done a course or two with Dr Bryan Kemple’s Lyceum Institute.

Excellent presentation, Justin, and I appreciated the chance to learn more about the Lyceum movement and how the problems faced back then are re-emerging now, though Urbit might be a game-changer to help those problems be overcome. Looking forward to seeing how this conversation develops and grows.

i could see realm and other life creating a decentralized a prestige network that operates like a university, my two cents is it needs awards/grades/certifications and ceremonial events, mixed with creator tools like a market to publish to, communities to engage, etc. i think it could be a great tool. brilliant, cant wait to see what u do.

Nope, this is what makes communities artificial and ick, introduces low quality beurocrats, this very system is good for fake grift communities, ask if you would be apart of a community that does this bs from day1. Will bring in low iq people tho

once markets/employers circumvent accreditation and certification is decentralized, universities explode and revert to relatively monastic institutions with strict entry requirements. Living on a campus will be considered as unusual as joining a convent
