At least until MK11, which had a ridiculous amount of retcons, plot holes, and continuity errors (granted, the previous installments also had all three of these, but here it's more blatant than usual). The new kharacters are shoehorned into the story as if they were there from the beginning, two kharacters that have absolutely nothing in common with each other (Jade and Kotal) are revealed to be long lost lovers, and the main villain, along with being the mother of a pre-existing kharacter, is revealed to have been behind everything from the very first installment, a plot twist that (much like everything else) comes with zero foreshadowing. It even turned two heroic kharacters (Kabal (yet again) and Sindel, also Cetrion if you believe that she was originally intended to be a benevolent character when her first scene was created) into villains for the sake of being edgy.

Well MK9-12 have a great story and Scorpions Revenge is an excellent adaptation They just have to respect the source material and not focus on self insert characters or creating a franchise
I didn't hate it but it Cole Young's character turned this movie into a fan fiction with a budget for me, which really brought it down. Still prefer the original 90s version which is more true to canon. Though, one thing they did get right this time around was the Scorpion / Sub Zero rivalry
The opening scene and the ending fight is incredible...everything in the middle was putting me to sleep...They really made us follow a character that doesnt exist in the game for 2hours...a weak cant fight undercard character at that🤦🏾♂️ This really could have been EPIC
They should reboot Rush Hour starring Josh Lawson as Kano and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero. Just two dudes getting into all sorts of shenanigans carrying out Shang Tsung's bidding.
Nitara was my girl, but she didn't have any oomph in the movie. My son still beat the sh*t out of me with any other characters, but I had a blast being stabbed in my face with my own bones by my kid🥲

Ok so, unpopular opinion. This movie was just mediocre. The opening scene was exceptional, but after that it basically nose dives lol. It's like a better version of Annihilation, and that's not really a compliment. The fights was mediocre, the special effects was mediocre, the acting was bland to mediocre. I think the only person who showed any real acting depth was the guy that played Kano. Sonya and Jax was ok, Lewis Tan did a decent job with what he was given, but Cole was clearly a character that was shoehorned in (according to the script writer it was mandated by the studio 🙄😒🤦🏾♂️). I also didn't like how they re-written the lore. Especially regarding fighters getting their powers. The chemistry between the actors in the original film is much better. And the fight scenes in the original is also miles better. I'm not lying there's not a SINGLE fight scene that holds up to that original Scorpion & Johnny Cage fight from 1995. After all of the bad ass martial arts films we got over the past 20+ years since the original film, this movie doesn't even hold a candle to ANY OF THEM!!! @@Zikk0_o Let’s be real - this is a bad film...but it’s entertaining as hell, because there are a few saving graces. BUT...it’s not nearly on the level of MK: Annihilation. Honestly Scorpion’s Revenge is the best MK film. Yes, even eclipsing the original ‘95 film (once the nostalgia glasses are removed).
@@tajcee It's a step above Annihilation, but that's not saying much. The story is just pointless and we waste time on Cole when it should've been on other characters. Everyone that died was pointless based upon Shang's line at the end about being able to revive them. The whole Power Rangers shtick of unlocking powers was laughable and stupid. Jax magically growing mechanical arms was almost worth closing the HBOMax app. Scorpion's Revenge was decent and at least stuck with the lore to an extent. However I'm tired of Scorpion being the focus of everything because Ed Boon has such a hard on for him.
@@Zikk0_o Agreed. I don’t understand why this game and its universe is so difficult to translate to live action. It’s really not that hard! Cole Young.... errrgggh this character could’ve been scrapped all together. They should’ve absolutely focused on Scorpion’s journey to revenge by seeking out Bi Han, and along the way he comes across Sonya, Jax, and Liu Lang... “Scorpion’s Revenge” executed this story in such a solid way, this live action film could’ve totally followed this template. And yeah, the scene with Jax’s arms... Stupid as hell. I literally went... “What?!!” Kano, apart from Scorpion and Sub Zero, was hands down the only thing keeping me interested in this film, the actor did a dope job. And I was never interested in the game character to begin with!
I'm really surprised at how badly Martin scored this - granted it wasn't perfect, but this movie gave me more than I expected, and I didn't get bored and enjoyed it a lot. I'd honestly give it a 7/10 - and for a Video Game movie? That's incredible!
“Made for the fans”..... kind of? There’s some good fan service but to be honest it’s all very surface level and easy stuff to kind of get right. Cole is SOOOOOOO BOOORIINNNG and the only characters I ended up caring about were scorpion, sub zero, and Kano who stole the show. The rest of the cast could have been a hell of a lot more entertaining and enjoyable to watch as characters, but there really isn’t much there.
Sub-Zero and Kano carried the movie. Sonya and Jax were fine but they didn't have to be there, and the rest were awful actors. Some good bits here and there, but otherwise it's a dull and cheap looking film.
It sucked. It was astoundingly boring for a movie about fighting. Nobody had any character or charm to them at all, cept maybe the guy playing Kano. And even he was annoying as hell after a bit.
But it’s all in execution. I think that’s where the ‘95 movie succeeded more or less. This one is somehow cheesier than the actual world the MK universe is based upon.
my fav thing about this was taslim vs sanada.. everything around those 2 coulda used more work followed by doing the leo dicaprio/pointing meme every time i saw my neighbourhood (the first 20 min are all 20 mins from my house), where billys bro got his arms ripped off is where they shot bad boy bubba
No not made for the fans it’s more for people who like those resident evil movies. Because this movie doesn’t follow any game or any of the lore at all
This movies' two biggest problems were the forced inclusion of Cole, and how they tied the powers/abilities to the dragon marking. Far too much time was wasted on giving Cole a backstory and training the fighters so that they can finally use their powers. It would've been so much easier to just say, yes, Liu Kang can control fire through his training as a monk or that Jax's new arms are state-of-the-art military prosthetics. All that shit with the dragon markings and arcana made things far more complicated than they needed to be. Sonya, Jax, and Kano didn't have any magic. They just had access to hi-tech weapons and equipment. In a post-Iron Man Hollywood, it shouldn't be that hard to explain their stuff away. As for the other characters, fuck it. It's magic/chi. The movie quickly established that literal gods exist. At that point, magic is a given.
Honestly I liked it. It’s not perfect but I had fun with it. They didn’t have to make an original character. They could’ve cast Lewis Tan is a character that already exist.
Yeah, even I was confused with Jax's arms when I first seen them. Like how in the hell can monks living in the caves afford the tech to rebuild Jax's arms. Then, I remembered the whole "arcana" concept the movie introduce. Jax's arcana manifested in his mechanical arms like Cole's plot armor!
Actually, that would've made a lot of sense. She did have a story arc that would be more fitting for a main character. And they could have expanded her relationship with Jax some more, make them more relatable. Cole was completely unnecessary...
I had low expectations, but this was better than I thought. It was definitely better than the original only due to this film actually being bloody. Cole was boring, they should’ve had Johnny Cage as the main. Kano and Kabal were funny.
"It was definitely better than the original only due to this film actually being bloody." So story, structure, camaraderie, atmosphere, and acting - everything the original had, but this doesn't - is second to a bit of blood?
@@Syklonus Take those nostalgia glasses off man. This was way better than that cheesy ass 95 movie. And I grew up with it and the games. 95 movie is just about fighters fighting in a tournament. Enter the Dragon already did that better. I like that this new one is a prequel before the tournament
To be honest. The fact that there is no mortal kombat was super disappointing. Was honestly thinking wow they are gunna cram that tournament... oh... ooohhhh... danm that sucks. Maybe in the next one we get the actual thing. They can still call it mortal kombat. Because we didn't actually see it. They could have called this one practice mode or something...

I like how they had to cut out Johnny Cage because they didn’t feel comfortable having a “main white character” yet they put poster “of him” in at end to try to sell us on the sequel. You can tell they added that at last moment because of fan backlash
Idk I kinda figured when I first heard he wouldn’t be in it I thought “ahh they’re probably wait to do something with him in the sequel” I gotta say tho I was pretty hyped when they did tease his character in the end
The fights were solid but they relied too much on tight closeups and annoying editing, but the gore was cool (when it wasn't cgi blood) The casting for Scorpion, Sub Zero, and Kano was pitch perfect, the rest of the cast ranged from passable to bland. The lead protagonist was pretty boring, he's literally what I expected him to be. Just a guy to explain exposition to for people who aren't familiar with the games, even though there's a million other MK characters they could've done this with that would've been ALOT more fun to do this with than he was.
Deep isn't exactly the right word.
I love mortal Kombat, but just because it has a lot of lore, doesn't make entirely deep.

Honestly it would make more sense if Cole, a former champ as states in the movie, was paid to lose fights after he retired. Maybe this was the case at one point or its in the 4 hour Mortal Kombat Kut.
That could've at least been interesting but the dude is a studio mandated character, no one was going to go through that much trouble for him.

Mortal Kombat is one of those properties that is so widely known that i feel if you are brand new to the series all you have to understand is that it is a fighting game, then youre golden.
Kano was almost too fun in this to where he would have been a perfect anti-hero for this.
I felt tricked because I thought he was gonna be that anti-hero but he switched sides. Without a clear motivation I may add.
I knew he could switch at any moment. He's a Merc. They go where the money is at.
But the misdirection was that they made him so likable that you almost forget that he could switch sides.
Or a villain protagonist.
@@asdfghj13579fly Plus, Kano saved Sonya and Cole's lives when they're attacked by Reptile prior to switching sides, which made his decision more unexpected.
Mortal Kombat seriously has so much potential, but nobody has struck that perfect balance between dark, brutally epic & tongue-in-cheek self-awareness. Honestly, I bet someone like Tarantino could make it work.

There's no need for Cole Young as a self-insert because that's who Johnny Cage is supposed to be.
Bingo!
I didn't like Cole...
“What?!!”

The rest of the cast could have been a hell of a lot more entertaining and enjoyable to watch as characters, but there really isn’t much there.
Sub Zero was the bomb. He's a serial killer.
Let's be honest, Mortal Kombat always had a cheesy ass story.
But it’s all in execution. I think that’s where the ‘95 movie succeeded more or less. This one is somehow cheesier than the actual world the MK universe is based upon.

I’m telling you Martin is hilarious 😂

They didn't show his face cause they knew there wouldn't be a sequel.
He never had to be the lead, just someone the casual viewers can connect with. I don't see how they couldn't do it with Liu Kang though.
I cannot believe how bad this movie is.
You'd think the fight scenes would be good, but nope, they're bad too. Couldn't follow most of them for shit.
Hey man. Here cause of the incredibly respectful way you treated Chris Stuckman during his interview. Classy dude.
They Made Liu Kang Obi Wan, and Kung Lao Qui-Gon
The fights were solid but they relied too much on tight closeups and annoying editing, but the gore was cool (when it wasn't cgi blood)
The casting for Scorpion, Sub Zero, and Kano was pitch perfect, the rest of the cast ranged from passable to bland.
The lead protagonist was pretty boring, he's literally what I expected him to be. Just a guy to explain exposition to for people who aren't familiar with the games, even though there's a million other MK characters they could've done this with that would've been ALOT more fun to do this with than he was.
Overall I think this was a decent film that definitely gave me what I was looking for as a fan of the games. But I also felt like a lot certain areas could've definitely been stronger.
