My mom is from Ashtabula, it was once a very beautiful city, It went downhill around 1985, it tries very hard to hang on though, but that's only because of a couple large companies still there. The Ashtabula harbor was one of the largest coal ports in The USA, all that coal would come up from Kentucky and West Virginia and would feed all the steel plants, like those in Gary Indiana, Detroit and other states. There used to be mountains of coal there, plus lots of international sailors, which brought families to Ashtabula from other countries.

There's nothing but cookie cutter, copycat businesses you can find in any other liberal copycat neighborhood. Nothing original. Just a couple of overpriced street businesses trying to get the tourist $$$ "heads on beds" shithole city. 1 block off the beaten path is ghetto fabulous TRUTH.
      It's just low class sad.

As a fellow Appalachian growing up along the Ohio River it is the same story. These were prosperous areas until the 1980's when American companies started to set up shop in China so they could make a bigger profit. Our country needs to invest in Appalachia which is the forgotten part of America!

Sad really, even though I grew up in Lake County I visited these sights quite often and remember when the Mall first opened and how busy it was.. I remember stopping at the Flying Saucer gas station as well way back when and thought it was so cool.. Life goes on unfortunately and some things are gone, rotten or forgotten.. Some bright spots though through the area so its not all bad news.. Thanks for the video..

I remember when downtown was bustling and busy. When Sears closed. Slowly every one left. The mall came to town. Like in many small too. And wiped out small businesses. Now the mall to is about done. Sad.

I remembered your walk around with your friend of Century III Mall, if Ashtabula mall did not have the Hospital, Dunham Sports, Shoe Dept and Jo Ann the Mall would have been shuttered and suffered the same fate of neglect and vandalizing of the property. The nicest and best kept property on the wrong side of the bridge is the rehabilitation clinic FYI folks. I probably have already mentioned it before but the Shenango Vally Mall and the JC Penneys will be closing May 31st and it was kept up and clean like the Town Center in your video. If you do get a chance theres a Mall in Ontario Ohio just West of Mansfield off 71 South/30 West called the Richland Mall head even more West you could possibly do the Round Robin of the Lima, Findlay , Marion, Defiance and Bowling Green Malls heck you could even hit the Sandusky Mall on your back home just a thought. Oh let us not forget that Midway Mall and personally I do not think that some of the Malls I mentioned will be around after 2024/2025.

But nah, i guess they don't care enough to do that.
