  • The 380 men of the 147th New York Infantry suffered heavy casualties west of the town of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. They would retire through the town and help defend the wooded slopes of Culp's Hill for the remainder of the battle. During the 155th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, numerous living history volunteers came together to retrace the steps of the 147th New York to help tell their story to a new audience.

I have 2 relatives that fought those 3 days with the 147 ny, the oswego regiment. One of them being wounded enough that he never fought again in the war. We make at least a couple trips there every year to see the battlefield. One of our 1st stops is always the oswego monument on the 1st days field, by the railroad cut. They had one of the highest casualty percentage rates of the battle at 74.7%. From the city of oswego where I proudly live, God bless them all

David, as a living history participant in this event and Brewerton, NY native...thank you for the kind words. We are beyond grateful to the other participants and NPS for allowing us to retrace the 147th New York's steps.

Just have some respect for all the men who gave their lives. South or North, brave men. 😔

Murat NY I dont have any respect for any man who fought to uphold slavery. And no matter how you twist and turn it in the end no matter their primary motivation, on a soldier to soldier basis, the CSA fought for upholding slavery in the south as the backbone of their industry. They where traitors and racists. No respect for them.

PartisanGamer Core of the war is not what I’m showing respect to. Men who walked on those fields and died do deserve respect. They were all Americans, yes I’m glad North won, but to this day we can not heal and close the wounds because we never learned to respect each other. Knowing that you will killed but still hold the orders and charge ahead! Just live that moment for a second.

I repeat: there cannot be given any respect to man who (for whatever individual reason) fought for an army that, at its core, was fighting to uphold slavery.
There is no healing with those elements of society and no acceptance - there is only one side who is right here and that is the side that calls them out for what they were: racists by participation. I dont care for the individual "bravery" of a man who supported the cause of upholding slavery by fighting within the CSA. We dont need any "healing" with those elements all we need is making crystal clear that the ideas they fought for are deplorable and disgusting and are not accepted in todays society and that those who are trying to relativize what they stood for by shifting the discourse away from their role in upholding slavery to their "individual bravery" are also not welcome here.
Any man who fought for the CSA was wrong in doing so and we shall not remember them fondly the same way we shouldnt remember members of the Wehrmacht or the Waffen-SS for their "bravery" (coming from a German).

PartisanGamer That type of thinking brings more wars, more killings..Are you ready as an individual for that storm? World is heading towards a Great War because we can’t learn to heal. You must respect your enemy to win wars. Must learn from the mistakes! lesson are written in blood at battle fields too bad dead can’t pass it on. Don’t wish it upon us. You are right about racism, education is key and starts with respect. By the way after all those horrors of WW2 Nazis are on rise in Deutschland And racism is on top level BECAUSE didn’t learn a bit

Nope sorry. Nazis are on the rise because of separate problems not because we didnt make them our buddies.
Nazis are also wrong in pretty much everything they think and say - their fear though doesnt come from the lack of "healing" but because they fear to get the short end of the stick economically - which is a totally separate problem generated by capitalism. The same capitalism that gave rise to warmongering for oil and to neoliberals that would do anything for more money and power - which in turn created unnecessary wars and instability all over the world and then lead to millions of people being displaced due to economic hardships and the very relevant fear of dying, cause western nations turned their countries into warzones and pillaged their natural ressources, or left their nations in disarray after colonialism ended - and now those same people have to - quite naturally - flee those circumstances and nazis over here in Germany see them as the economic enemy for their well being and future (also the one of the main reasons for the several influx of people into the KKK during its several itterations - there was a massive first wave of the KKK right after the civil war, fueled by the fear of having to compete with the freed blacks for the same jobs and then a second massive wave came during the 20s and the depression era again for the same reasons - the root cause for racism and nationalism is almost always economical in a capitalist society) - Once we have a running post-capitalistic society its just a matter of 1-2 generations and I guarantee you there will be almost no racism or nationalism be left.
That is what gave rise to nazis and far right wingers .... not the lack of healing ... whatever that might be when talking about nazis.
We dont need to forgive them or "heal" anything we just have to make clear that they and what they stand for are not welcome here and cast them out as a society. And the same goes for everything soldiers of the CSA stand for. Nothing they have to say, none of their ideals and ideas are of any worth to society and our collective future. They are 100% wrong on everything and we dont need any of this. Thats all there is to say - we cannot accept them in our socities and in our middle cause they are cancerous to everything a free and equal society should stand for - they add nothing to our society but perpetual fear and hate and are by definition a much greater threat to the actual healing that needs to take place. They and there ideas are like a festering wound, if we allow them to remain in our midst they will grow and grow and grow.
Nazis, nationalists and racists can only face one thing: being shunned by society, as their ideas are wrong in every regard and we need to rid ourselves of them and what they stand for - so no "healing" for them. For their sick and twisted ideologies there is only one answer: make them feel that they are not welcome and that we dont need them or anything they stand for.
The only option there is for all those elements is to realize how wrong they are and then we can talk about any sort of healing. There is a certain order to those things and that is 1) stop being a nazi/nationalist/racist 2) we welcome you. For as long as they do not accept their being wrong this order is 1) be a nazi/nationalist/racist 2) be unwelcome in our society.
