- This Yamaha YZF1000R Thunderace rebuild has taken the best part of a year to complete. Through all the pain and heart break, all the sets back. We eventually completed the rebuild!. And in this upload we finally get to take the bike out on the open road!. But first it needs to pass the MOT test....

You need to put teflon tape on the threads of your compressor fittings.
When using ptfe tape make sure you put it on the same way on the thread front to back anticlockwise or when you tighten down on it, it will unravel. Good Luck.
100%. All air line fittings need to teflon taped for a proper seal.
Was going to say it, but you said it, spot on!
You beat me to it too. Definitely will solve the leak. Excellent video!
I was recently told that you roll it like spaghetti then feed it into the valley of the thread. I had always wrapped it round like paper.
Great work on the restoration. Regarding the rust in the tank, I did the following:
Filled the tank with Apple Cider vinegar and left it 24 hours
Drained it out, then rinsed with water, to loosen the rust.
Drained the water out then sprayed lots of WD40 in the tank.
Drain this, then fill with fuel and put an inline fuel filter.
Change the filter after 2 months and I never had an issue.
Oxalic acid is by far the best for rust . I tried apple cider, sulphuric, hydrochloric, commercial products and a host of other products and so called remedies. Definitely oxalic acid looked like a new tank inside, shiny metal.
@@davidvanhinsbergh2444 on point.. oxalic acid used in dry cleaning & commercial painting for removing metallic stains.. doesn't harm clothing or paint nor hands & doesn't attack clean steel but destroys rust/oxides
Well done your perseverance has won the day great update.
What a great video and fantastic to see your old man swing his leg over it. Love the colour by the way, it looks amazing. I’m calling this a win for you 🏆
Thanks 👍
The thing that you still have your old man to see it and ride it. Thanks good sir.
I'm so proud of you! What an amazing series this has been! Congratulations and treasure that beautiful YZF1000 for many years to come.
“Impressive that you have come this far; your perseverance and dedication are commendable. Your videos are interesting and enjoyable to follow. This Thunderace looks beautiful once again.”
A mate of mine had one of these from new. Still a great looking bike after all these years.
Lovely journey, great bike, used to ride with a buddy who had one, I nearly got the 600 version, Thundercat 600, went with the CBR600 instead. Priceless indeed to restore you dads old ride :)
Nice bike, well worth all the effort to restore it.
The Thunderace was the 1st big bike I ever rode , after having an NSR 125 RR , the Ace belonged to a work mate who had purchased it new , he'd only had it a month after getting back into biking , he let me have a go and I absolutely loved it , fantastic machine , it was the same silver and red , great memories 👍🏻
It's a proper bike with no mothering features. I prefer bikes like these as they make you a better rider rather than letting the bike take you for a ride 👍🏼
Good on you mate, brings back memories of my old 'Ace, loved that thing!
Ptfe tape around the threads or couplings will work a treat boshhhhh
Teflon tape works wonders for sealing air leaks on couplings for air compressors and more. Great vid and job well done! Amazing Job!
The guy who does fuck all apart from complain about others will be along shortly no doubt..... Congrats on getting it through the MOT
Well done Ryan, now go out an enjoy it, I can start driving again on 1st August so I'll be getting mine out 🙂
Thanks mate!! Yes riding it as much as I can 😎
i'll join you both, if you'll have me that is 😁
Its a bike you will never make money on after a full rebuild, but thats kinda the point isnt it.
You get it 😉
Well done! Priceless!❤
Yes your old mans correct.. You get a bike and stick with it! Its Fazers for me. Absolutely love the ending ! No broken engine had me going. Definitely correct about total price for bike
i drive a ace haha stil my first bike though can’t sell it and drive a newer r1 this is just u and the machine no abs or that kind of help just pure raw emotion
greetings from the netherlands
Well done saving it 👍🏻
a YZF 750 six speed gear cluster will fit straight in
Well done wrap plumbers PTFE tape round the threads to stop your air leaks top effort
I've owned an 'Ace since new in 1999 when I was in my 20s (it's now relegated to old man semi-retired status as I replaced it with an MT10.) A bit of history... Yamaha's flagship sports bike in the mid 90s was the ageing FZR1000 EXUP. The Honda Fireblade changed the game for litre class sports bikes (smaller size and lower weight) and whilst Yamaha was developing the YZF-R1, as a stop gap, they updated the FZR with the sportier swingarm from the YZF-750, went to semi-ecu controlled ignition with EXUP value (speed, load/gear and rpm sensor based), uprated the suspension, gave it a new "posh frock" fairing and styling and called it the YZF1000R Thunderace. It was their halo model sports bike at the time (for 2 years) to try and compete with the Fireblade and Kwaka ZX9R (which IMO it did well and was a litle bit better than both). The R1 changed the game again, and the rest is history... It got reclassified at this point as a Sports Tourer, which it did fairly well as for a few years. I did about 54k on mine, doing track days (both in the UK and at the Nurburgring), rode the TT course and did 40 or 50 euro trips to the Alps/Black Forrest and places like that. It's still a great bike, if a little dated.. ;) (and the riding position isn't very good to small, older men, which I have now become (MT10 is a worthy replacement for old men who are still hooligans at heart... :D )... ;) )
Nice to see you out on the bike after all your hard work mate!
Amazing paint job
I'm surprised your dad didn't nick your leathers & helmet & go for a blast on it lol, looks great though & if I were you I wouldn't part with it as I feel it needs to stay in the family. I had the FZR Exup which had pretty much the same engine & I totally agree about the 5 speed gearbox a 6 would have made it a totally different animal.
As for the airline PTFE tape will cure the leaks.
Great video, your dads cool. Good job with the bike.
Well done Rye
Gritting from Eastbourne
Dad seams
to be proud
Nice Haiku
You need PTFE or Teflon tape on all threads
PTFE tape for the compressor joints
Absolutely loved this video👏 Great work Rye!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good vid. Shame you missed a few items for MOT
Still got mine from brand new in 1996 - £9050 at that time doesn't look like bike prices have gone up with inflation! However although it's been neglected and left in the garage at some stages I'm using it again now and what engine doesn't do is rattle like this one seems to
Chase out the water with methylated spirits - then empty a can of WD40 into the tank - before use give a swill with a gallon of petrol ( keep it for the lawn mower) and you’re ready to go
PTFE Tape m8......
Like your videos fae the Highlands of Scotland. 😊
So Rye, does your Dad still ride ? Imagine that 13 year old kid would grow up to restore the very bike he took you on as a young pillion ! 🤩
He also has a VFR1200 😎
Well done man
I've watched your videos and sometimes have questioned these way you do things but ... This vid is the best one you've done. Just taking it round to your dad is fantastic. Look after your dad♥️.
Be careful of the bike though. If you aren't familiar with having no electronics it will bite. Look after it, it looks great👍
That part where you went to show your dad, that was pretty special mate.bike looks awesome and this series of videos was brilliant.well done BOR....keep up the good work.
Stick a bit of Teflon tape around the threads, that will stop your air leak
So, you going to give it back to your dad. So you can go for a father and son ride 👍🏼
That made me think; what does his dad ride now, if he still rides?
Had same issue on my fazer caliper, bought cheap copper brushes to fit on drill, made cleaning the grooves the seals sit in much easier using brake cleaner aerosol
DEOX C or POR 15 for the fuel tank
Huge respect.
mk2 astra gte came out in 84 so A B reg
Air Compressor Fittings sealing, use some plumbers Teflon tape on the threads, but look up the proper way how as their is a wrong way
great job shame you didn't have a picture of your Dad on it back in the day. 👍👍👍
Rapid with PTFE tape
Geez, it sounds like the cam chain is loose on that bike. Might just be the audio from the camera. The rust in the tank, I used white vinagar (tesco about 20p a bottle) then dried the tank with a hairdryer. After sloshed some acertone in the tank. Next, I put a cup of 2stroke oil in the tank and then filled my tank up. It's been great for over 6 months, just have to make sure I fill up on my way home from a ride to limit the rust coming back. Good luck, it was a absolute pain in the assssss😅
They call it the yamaha tick,.
I bought exactly the same bike in 1998. Italian model as well, as a parallel import as they were known back then. At its first MOT, the testing station stuck a beam deflector on the headlamp for me! Kept it until 2018. It was Yamaha's stop gap bike between the FZR1000 and the R1. In fact I think the first R1's had the same engine? Might be wrong on that one. Still, it was and still is today an awesome bike.
The thunderace was more or less the old FZR1000 with a new set of clothes. Always seemed like a stop gap model while Yamahe finished off the R1. Still got plenty of go though. But yes, more touring than sports. As others have said ptfe tape on your airline fittings.
It was a stop-gap model that Yamaha released while they were developing their new flagship bike. I don't think it was supposed to live so long, but it seemed to become popular.
Plumbers white ptfe tape when you wrap over the thread wrap it clockwise over the thread
Well I can maybe understand you missing the brake disc and headlight . But everything else is plainly obvious ,so why put it to fail? I guess it’s just to do another video. So engineered content.🐒
I was aware of the binding brake, just didn't have time to sort. The chain is debatable, if I rode the bike to the MOT station it would have stretched massively. As say what was important was to find out issues I didn't know. Learnt a lot though 😉
Wot a great video and bike. Top job. Nice to see ya dad. Ptfe tape does the job for air leaks. Cheers.
On the air compressor, have you got seal tape between the connectors?
Well done on getting it back on the road. Maybe in 30 years time one of my kids will bring my current bike around to me all clean and tidy. (unlikely)
I think bikes, and probably engines in general, are known for getting better as they get warmer. Too warm is not good though.
I had 96-97, it will lift the front wheel at 60mph. Despite the engine angle and forward weight bias. It has plenty of grunt !
Restoring and riding on the bike you used to ride pillion on as a kid with your dad is really special. Glad he’s still around to see it. Great job, well worth the effort.
Sounds amazing. Less aggressive than mine, as the wool is my exhaust is burned away so she sounds violently angry.
bike sure are actually good i was paying 1600 for a 125 and now i pay 550 full comp
That looks stunning, im actually thinking of buying one from a friend of mine, i drove it some kms and loved it, love the engine, its so smooth, and more confortable than my SV650s as it stands.
Congratulations Rye, it was a hell of a good job 😉
Yeah PTFE plumbing tape from Screwfix and Toolstation.
Good video mate keep up the hard work.
Thanks, will do!
You've done a great job, as for the downshift try blipping the throttle on the downshift. It's something I do and it works bloody well. Great video.
Rye, you bloody legend!!!
Hardly
@@ziondanny7081it’s a metaphor.
What a personal journey for you bro 👌🏻 you need to record your dad riding it or at least taking off on it or even reverse the roles of 25 years ago you now ride it with your old cheese on the back 👌🏻👌🏻
Well done Rye. Only use E5 or less in the bike. E10 will screw it up. It’s hydroscopic due to the ethanol. It will degrade the rubber in the carbs/lines etc, and make things rust!
Absolutely.... anything after 2002 can use E10 etc without concern (though it degrades quickly, so maybe not in anything that will be laid up for more than a few months); 1992 - 2002 "some" can use E10, anything prior to that you should definitely stick to E5 or less (PS the word is actually 'hygroscopic'...... another couple of words are 'pedantic' and 'bastard', which can always be applied to me! :D)
@@WoBlink1961 I was fairly inebriated when I wrote my comment, to be fair.
Proud moment between Father and Son, you did this. Ride it with pride. Well done.
Video on your dad riding be cool, and you were saying power range Well you can always play with cog ratios to suit your feel.
Hope your not still using a split link on your shiny new chain.
All my fond memories are with 5 speed gear box. Suzuki RF900 & Honda Transalp 650. Inline & Twin and always love the meat of a 5 speed. Mate you are on one of the most underrated bikes on the planet. ❤
Congratulations! You should be right proud.
Great video and well done. Dad is gonna borrow that often methinks....
Marvelous!
Absolute quality... You've done a cracking job with the bike and especially taking it around to see your dad... Good job mate 👍🏻
well done.
Would be great to see your dad having a blast , be like meeting an old friend. 😀
Old school is cool. I would say that having owned a 92 Gixxer since 92.
To clean your Tank use a product by C Wylde and son's Leeds, it's called Bio Rust remover. It works 100% I have used it many times, never failed. Just get a bucket, fill with hot water mix biorust in with water, pour into your rusty tank, top up with more hot water right up to the fuel filler neck. Leave for 3 days. Pour out into a container that has a lid has you can put other rusty metal parts, bolts and such in container and treat them too. Your tank will be gleaming. Put a litre of petrol in tank, swirl around, empty into separate container to be disposed of at your local waste management site. Refit your tank and fill it up to stop rust returning. Honestly biorust has worked brilliantly Fo me on many occasions on some of the worst rusty tanks I have come across. It leaves inside of tank rust free and like new. Lovely bike by the way, seriously thinking of getting one in blue and black, same colours has my ZZR1100 C1. I own a YZF750R in cocktail colours too. Great engines those 20 valvers. 😊😊😊
Fantastic effort getting your dads bike back on the road for him.
You will have lost a bit of midrange torque getting rid of the EXUP Valve. Wonderful invention. The Bike I'm sure would ride even better with it on. The Five speed Gearbox suited the EXUP valve setup perfectly due to to Torque changing with the revs.
Great job, great review of the bike and seeing your dad's reaction was class. Fair play fella
Thanks 👍
I've been riding since the late 80's and had an immaculate '96 Thunderace for the last 5yrs that's still only got 13000 on the clock. LED lights all round including angel eye headlights, black screen and scorpion exhaust but pretty much standard apart from that. Arthritic back forces sale and that's it pictured... West Midlands
Great video and what a job you did, good on ya mate 😊
Fantastic channel 😊
Brit bootlicking is insufferable. I can't believe you guys that that level of BS to get on the road. The Thunderace, however, is absolutely beautiful. Had a YZF600R for a long time and always wanted an 'Ace, settled for an FZ1 instead.
Well done that man, and well done for listing the faults
I had both bikes. The first year of the R1 saw their gearboxes breaking a shaft from memory and by the 2nd year they had it sorted and a new paint livery that was awesome. I bought mine within 24 hours of seeing it. The difference was huge. Your bike is way more rideable and they have excellent handling, The R1 was a real handful. It was a race bike and required 100% concentration. I had an exhaust fitted and the carbs rejetted to suit and it had 145hp on the dyno.
Keep going mate, I stumbled across a little fan group of yours on Facebook who didn’t seem to have anything positive to say… 🙄
They’re probably jealous you’re making a go of something they wouldn’t have the nuts to do 😂
Blimey there was so much to do to get the bike safe, what was actually rebuilt ?
oxalic acid for rust removal In a petrol tank is by far the best. I've tried other acids such as sulphuric, hydrochloric and commercial products. The inside of the tank looked like new, and needed to be done outside l found out when I opened the garage door l was met with tools with a light layer of rust on presumably from the fumes, bit of a shock to be honest, but the tank was spotless, it came off an old triumph trophy and was heavily rusted.
I'm so glad we dont have motorcycle MOT in the netherlands. Its a big enough hassle to keep your car okey when you're not able to buy something less than 15years old let alone have someone else fix it for you.
Marvellous video...great to see the old man on his old bike.
Well done for getting Griff Rhys Jones to play your dad!
liquid rust remover should do the trick
Very competent and underrated bikes. As a result they go for silly cheap prices. I’ve got one sitting at home but having trouble finding the time to fix it 😔
That bike has aged so well. Still looks so good
🏍👍👍👍
Very underrated bike I owned one back in the day fanatics took and the brakes are better than what are on my ktm1290
