    • @brianmreschke3441

Thanks Mary and thanks Tim (loved the Beato interview about the vanishing middle class too ( used to have a montage print of wolf head sketches called “The Vanishing Wolf” where the sketches fade into the background and the yellow eyes are the part that's coloured in) but as the wolf is making a comeback- hopefully the Mexican wolf too (there is only one!!! )- so shall the middle class and all the other people that were part of the music industry.)
By virtue of Rick’s video and one simple statement of Tims from the very beginning of your interview Mary, I have had a bit of an epiphany about practising and also begin to understand the importance of collaboration. I’ve been sitting at my piano pretending for years and once in a while I get something I like happening but I was often in a trance playing passively- slowly mostly pushing myself to see possible harmonies and how far I could go. I hope to say Little did I know, I was a ghost to myself until I discovered the idea of riffing all the time It might bring a more specific focus to the task of understanding harmony and finding my wings. I've been a perpetual wanderer through accidental harmony and find myself either doing repeated chords like in dime store ballads singing in the style of Paul McCartney - always on the look out for catchy lines (-I love singing- ) or I’ll play musical hinges one after the other (dramatic ones) and spaghetti Italian opera melodies made up on the spot. I think I'm going to do an additional thing from now on where I pick a key and practise riffs AND write them down so I can be a R E A D E R. .
Sail on Mary! I am looking forward to watching yet another of your intriguing videos but actually I am going to run this pay dirt through the sluice a few times so I won't miss anything. Awesome!
P.S. Thinking out loud... The fear of making a mistake lay hidden under the habit of sitting down to escape the world by pretending (it's actually kind of an act of diplomacy.) ...and being limited by constantly being on the search for something new and never stopping much to analyse. However, now I have mindful, energetic, purposeful riffing! What more could a person ask for?

Tim Pierce has been doing this forever, he has played with everyone, he knows all the technical jargon. Still, when he describes something, he uses simple words, simple analogies that everyone understands, including non musicians. He's up there with all the superstars but he seems to be a very humble guy who would take time to talk with everyone. I really like this man!!

I was in an up-and-coming Albuquerque band when Tim and Traveler were hitting their stride. (As an example. we were the second band up at a five band outdoor concert at Speedway Park...Traveler was the headliner.) We still have a lot of mutual friends, but were only acquaintances back then. He and his buddy Bobby Unser Jr. dropped by one of my band's rehearsals on night and Tim sat in with us on a Steely Dan song. Hearing Tim and our other guitarist nail the solos on Kid Charlemagne in unison is still one of the best moments in my musical career.

He has some sound knowledge and understanding of the music industry, technology but doesn’t lose any of the creativity, which goes back to your video about being many things beyond being just a performer. The more I look, the more I believe those who are just creative and just play are actually in the minority. So many musicians these days are multi-talented or perhaps multi-disciplined is the better word because it’s not just about creativity. Thanks for another great video! 😃👍

I think these "unsung heros" are now well known thanks to internet/you tube. I did not even know Jimmy Page and Steve Luckather were studio guitarists and had never heard of f.i. Tim Pierce or Larry Carlton. I was a fan of Jean Luc Ponty and Holdsworth in the 80's. I had one tape (enigmatic ocean) a friend copied from an album for me. He had bought the record abroad. My local music shop did not even know the names. I looked for years for an album of Luther Johnson recorded in the 70's in Paris. Found it in Paris in the early 90's. Now I can listen to everything they ever recorded on you-tube or spotify. I wish we had internet back then in the 70's-80's.

As someone who does “pub” gigs on the reg Ill say that, even though those chops are super important imo, it doesnt translate to the stamina of a set in which every tune matters. Party bands, bar band sets have a ton of throwaway built in but when you have an hour to make a mark, every second of every song counts. Artist gigs have way more weight for me than any 4 hour gig for that reason. Sometimes the hardest thing is just sitting there, in wrapped attention, where you can hear a pin drop, playing a delicate finger picked pattern behind a singer

Musicians would ask me what kind of guitar I had. It started out as a Strat copy and I made all kinds of modifications to it such as locking tuners, a roller nut, a Wilkinson bridge, jumbo frets, a compound radius, and a humbucker in the bridge position with switches for single coil and in/out of phase. It was wonderful to play but now needs new frets. I used to live not too far from Warmoth, which is where I got my parts and ideas, such as the compound radius.
I have an actual Floyd Rose guitar and love the staying in tune part but don't really like how it feels under my hand when I palm mute and such and recently acquired an Epiphone SG which is great except I prefer jumbo frets. I got the idea from SRV and added them after I developed carpal tunnel syndrome from playing outside in the cold for too long during Christmas. Doctors wanted to perform surgery and told me I might never play guitar again, so I got on the internet and asked musicians for advice.
My favorite amp was my Peavey Classic 30. Then one day, I turned it on and smoke poured out of the top like fog. Now I have a 100-watt Marshall that only has preamp tubes. Generally, I play through my Line 6 PodXT that has every model pack I could get, including bass.

Tim is extraordinary, not only because of his extremely eloquent guitar skills, but his ability to explain his skills in such a relaxed manner without being pretentious. Far too many UA-cam guitarists are extremely pretentious - one guy drives me nuts. The only reason he has so many subscribers is because of all the guests he interviews; nobody would watch otherwise. Tim also has an amazing smile.
There is one guitarist who is probably more versatile than Tim because his brain is off the charts - Guthrie Govan. Here are a few quotes from people on Guthrie - "Guthrie has sheer mastery of almost every guitar technique, and a fantastic grasp of the English language. He is a brilliant instructor and is truly modest." - "I can't think of anyone who has such a grasp on various guitar styles." - "Ridiculously versatile, " - "Technique is beyond earth"
For the record, Mary, I appreciate your videos.

Heritage makes great guitars (some "old guys" at Gibson's Kalamazoo factory started Heritage when Gibson left in 1980-something). I have owned two 575's (think ES-175) and currently own a 555 (a bling version of the 535, think ES-335). I just bought the 555 about 6 months ago. I tried about six 335's and I chose the Heritage. I also own a real mid-60's 335 12-string that I bought on July 3, 1976 (I'm 63). You never forget your first Gibson. I just played it last night. Oh, great video Mary. I am a fan of yours. Thank you.

Tim looks like a bloke in a pub having a quiet Guinness in the corner. Unassuming, but, oh man, what a provenance he has. Very enjoyable to watch this, Mary. 🦓🦓🦓

Re: Playing pub gigs: If that can help you prepare for your tour, here's a suggestion. In the seventies, I worked in a small club north of San Francisco. The club happened to be closed on Wednesdays. Van Morrison, who was living in San Francisco at the time. liked playing small clubs, so on several Wednesday mornings he'd call Greg, the owner, and say "I'm coming up!" Greg would call two people and have a full room that evening for Van's gig. Perhaps a similar approach could work for you.

Even though I'll never have to do anything remotely close to this, it was awesome to watch this to see what it takes to play for the Grammys. Thank you for making and sharing this!

I never think about the people who play the background music for awards shows, Paul Schaeffer from Letterman's band was another one who you always see at awards shows like this. Vast musical repertoire needed.

TY Mary for highlighting Tim Pierce who is one of my favorite musicians. He's the modern version of what the "Wrecking Crew" was back in the day. He's 100% correct in that only "sight-reading" musicians were/are allowed in some circumstances akin to how sometimes orchestra musicians were chosen. I can read music but to be able to "nail the part" via sight-reading without rehearsing is nearly impossible although there are those that can. Tim's experience, credits, and pure skill allows him a kind of "work-around" in that regard. Excellent interview. He really opened up to you. And I've seen a lot of his videos.

Shame on me for not knowing who Tim Pierce is prior to this video. Thank you for educating me (as usual). I could listen to him talk all day about guitar stuff far beyond my understanding b/c he's so incredibly likable & down to earth. Also fascinating to learn about all the prep that goes into the Grammys for the "unsung musician heroes' behind the scenes. Another amazing interview. Thanks for sharing!

Really cool video, very nice of Tim to break down his setup (through the lens of the show) for you (and your audience). Someone should tell Tim Laufey's name is pronounced Lay-vay (rhymes with that defunct jazz club in L.A. called LaVelee).

Amazing interview with an amazing person by an equally amazing person. 80 songs is insane, although, I do recall an interview with Tom Morello recalling the time he became a member of the E Street Band for a while and he says The Boss made him learn an equally frightening number of songs for the tour. Might not have been 80 but it wasn't far off!
