The 'common sense' guide to meditation - Part 2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 чер 2024
- In the first part of his 'Common sense' guide to meditation John Butler emphasised stilling the body. In Part 2, he covers other aspects of his common sense approach, including discrimination and dealing with 'monkey mind'.
(Note: this was recorded in John's home in Bakewell and it becomes very quiet at the end so you may want to adjust the volume).
You can now listen to John on Spotify and other audio platforms. Here is his most popular recording 'Common sense guide to meditation' (1m views) - ffm.to/commonsenseguidetomedi....

Finally it all makes sense to me. The body cannot still the body. The feet on the ground stills the body. The mind cannot still the mind. The heart stills the mind. Once the body and the mind are still, the turbulent clouds of the monkey mind are moved away, the inner spirit is now open to the blue sky of higher awareness above the clouds. Now the radiant sunshine of God's love can be received into the openness of the empty cup resting on the stableness of the ground below. Beautiful.
Amen 🙏
Well said
Feel this is at the right time for me. Feels like coming home. Thank you John.
Yes, it does for me too. Since I was 13 I've been returning Home...it's been fascinating filled with deep diving into presence and at times very challenging, difficult for the body Journey.
I am not religious in any way, however I've been loving all of these videos and the advice given in them.
Loved you in Crouching Dragon Hidden Kitty
Jackie Chan I’m so happy that you love these videos and I do love them so much as well. You don’t need to be religious to enjoy them because what they convey is beyond any religion and it is universal to everyone. This also shows how much the church ( any church ) has missed not being able to pass these simple truths to the humanity. Spiritual development and progress has nothing to do with being part of any organised religion. Love and Light to you ❤️
Jackie Chan Christianity isn’t just about religion. Im not a religious man either, but there is most definitely a lot of ethical and advice based information on how to lead our lives in the works

One day, just when the Zen-master was about to commence his teaching, a bird started singing. The master and his pupils listened for quite a while until the bird finished his beautiful song. Then the master said: This concludes the teaching for today - and left.
The secret of meditation is attention. Anything that points your attention away from the active mind will do fine. Listen to a bird, the ticking of a clock, the sound of your breath, the silence between two thoughts. The inner Self (which is the One) will start shining through immediately. Then just rest in the light of that shining and do everything that you must do from that perspective. You can meditate all day without effort like this. You don't even need a chair.
Tell me more. Please.
@@OSKARSY11 What could I possibly ad to this? The answer is not in the telling or speaking, but in the stillness. So you could ask yourself: "To whom is this question for more information arising?" (to me) "Who am I" ? Follow this thought back to the source. It is the One. Rest there. And do this to every mind activity that arises. This is the most basic advaita vedanta teaching available. It is the most simple, the easiest and the most difficult (to the mind). For restless minds that can't follow, there is meditation or yoga. But stillness is the most direct teaching. If you can do this, you need nothing more. It's from the Indian sage Ramana Maharshi. John Godman has many good books and youtube video's about him. A living sage that also teaches this in an available form, would be Mooji. Or Eckhart Tolle. Or Rupert Spira. And of course John Butler. His method is meditation, but as all great sages, he points to stillness.
@@paulmetdebbie447 dude walk me through step by step how to meditate, thats all i want, i want stillnesd but i need you to tell me what to really do because if I master this... my oh my
@@paulmetdebbie447 please reply please
Paul met Debbie Exactly, meditation is listening to God.
This man knows where the elder scrolls are hidden.
@Gary Mcguckin Fortnight? The Elder Scrolls only exist in Euro Truck Simulator you dolt
legendariersgaming Although you bring up a good point, we all know the elder scrolls are hidden in the GTA world.
Edit: You are not a dolt you dolt, you’re just misguided.
And he DEFINITELY knows how to read them
I can barely describe how my face lit up on seeing this video appear in my subscriptions!!
He is the voice of a timeless, simple & natural wisdom which speaks to the 'part' of me that feels more real and true than the alienated construct of 'me' that conforms to the unreal ways of unconscious humanity. These videos are very precious.
The invisible friend. Thats very comforting John thank you. I will practice what you have taught in these two beautiful videos. Thank you both for your kindness. .
Thank you so much.
For me The Invisible Friend is the most comforting, most helpful thought ever. For me personally it is the Holy Spirit whom I feel present in my meditations (on the occasions when I manage to really quiet my mind and focus which as you might imagine is not always the case ;-)
*Physical body has left the chat*
Rambunctiounus 06 It does that the moment John speaks. My mind leaves as well. All that is left is spirit.
Well this was an unexpected treat, I'll probably end up watching this 20 times! Thank you so much John and Phil for the amazing videos, they've helped me so much with finding peace within myself
thumbs up to John and Phil and the help these videos give, on many levels.

Simply wonderful...what a pure blessing it is, to witness the kind, loving, gentle and warm wisdom of someone with a lifetime of learning. Grateful beyond words John and Phil ❤
John Butler is a modern day Brother Lawrence ( The Practice of the Presence of God) Love you guys! Evoking God's blessings upon you all
Thank you, Crystal. Brother Lawrence's 'Practice' was my very first spiritual book. It's still beside me, in the book case.
I became the watcher of my thoughts without emotionally reacting to them it’s a beautiful thing
Since early childhood, I have been a "seeker". I suffered from psychosomatic disorders such as stuttering and had my body full of eczema, was a social wreck. At an early adulthood, I realized that I was responsible for my health. Meditation became an important tool for me to help myself. Today (50 years later) I am completely healthy for ten years and I have found the "answers" that have been important to me in breaking many physical blockages which in turn led to breaking mental barriers. Something that has been a strong guiding star for me is that if you just do things with your heart, it makes sense, even if you can't see it from the beginning. Just be true to yourself, listen inward and trust the inner voice, be open to God for wanting His part in your development.
Many thanks for sharing this lovely experience - clearly you have followed your heart and it has made all the difference to your well-being - and so it well for us also. The practice of meditation of course helps enormously. Phil
"When the student is ready a teacher will appear" - Me thinking "oh, i wonder who might play that role in my li-WAIT A MINUTE" i love this man
exactly!!!!! The same thing crossed my mind

It's just the voice.Plain and simple. The rest is just a placebo. That's why no one else can find what John hasn't found.

Thank you John. You are a blessing to me.
Thank you with all my heart Mr John Butler❤️ discrimination in Spiritual Life is SO IMPORTANT. Discrimination and discernment can make spiritual progress so much more profound...I love you Mr Butler 😊

Love this very wise man. Keep making these videos John. God bless you xx
I feel like a wise old man came back from Aladdin in real life but cleaner, wiser and nicer. And hes hypnotizing me with his presence. Love you and thank you! For this
Happy to see you again!
Great questions. Great answers. Wonderful genuineness from both of you. Blessings and love to you.

Beautiful simplicity. The eloquent expression of that which is inexpressible. 💚
A balm to weary wounded souls, keep bringing these videos, they are much needed. Loved the change of venue, well done Phil and John, keep them coming.
Loved every part of this. Will be watching again to take notes. I'll be ordering your books soon! The lens of love really speaks volumes, and I love it. Fan service aside. God bless you both more so than he has before. I'm grateful for what you both do.

I smiled all the way through this video. Thank you John butler for that. 🙂
My feet have been off the ground all week, lost my stillness and then poooof' just like that another new video of yours pops up 😁 thank you John & Phil 💞 love, light & stillness to you both 💞💞 sending Love from the other side of the planet 🇦🇺
I feel like John looks deep in to my soul, in a very kind way
Thanks for your videos. You two are making a great contribution.
The last 5 minutes are gold. Wisdom filled.
Thank you again John and Phil!!
We shouldn’t try to get out of the body. We can’t. As St. Paul said, the body is the temple of the Spirit. We feel Life itself when we pay attention to the Presence that lives in the body.
John is a true inspiration
As Always with your conversations, I feel soaked in the presence of God. I love the symbol of the chair at the end for bottom on the chair, feet on the floor😊
Wow absolute gold..stillness is always here.. love this man
I LIKE THE IDEA OF OPENING THE HANDS MEDITATING ON THE LET GO, LET GOD...AND TELLING MYSELF DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE MIND....FORGET THE MIND...BUT I HAVE A VERY LONG JOURNEY AHEAD OF ME TO QUIET MYSELF REGULARLY. WHAT I AM MOST FRUSTRATED WITH IS I'M GETTING UP IN YEARS AND FEEL LIKE TIME IS FLEETING AWAY...I WANT THIS SPECIAL QUIETNESS, BUT I HAVE TROUBLE GIVING MYSELF THE QUIET TIME ROUTINELY...TOO MANY DISTRACTIONS......MY OWN FAULT FOR NOT GOING WITH THOSE RHYTHMS OF TO BED EARLY AND GETTING UP EARLY ENOUGH. I HOPE I CAN DISCIPLINE MYSELF BETTER. I DO THANK YOU JOHN AND PHIL FOR SHARING THESE WONDERFUL VIDEOS. WHAT A BLESSING THIS IS TO ME. I'VE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING LIKE THIS AND REALLY LISTENING AND BEGINNING TO PRACTICE THIS STILLNESS AND QUIET.
Thank-you John and Phil.
Enjoyable but a different feel to the first. I loved the interactive meditation that John did throughout the first and end of second part of this guide. I liked the quiet approach to John's voice in those moments.
Very good video. Good work! This helps so many people.
Blessed be John! So delighted to meet you here on youtube. Your explanations of this grounding part of meditation is so clear, so skillfully told that it makes it so easy to follow. Everything you're saying feels has a solid fundamental +experiential knowledge and you have a gift so remarkably tell about it and keep it grounding. This ability is rear nowadays. I also enjoy you British English, I enjoy the true knowledge of this language. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!
Such a lovely calming video.
Good to see you again!
Beautiful souls! The both of you!
......and finishing up with my comment as you finished up with your summary, John, yes I know what you mean about our "invisible friend"....that was a great summary of this video.....I will continue in this quest because it is never too late!!!
Excellent videos by John and the team. Hope to visit All Saints sometime when John is there.
Great work
This is gold, Thank You🙏🏼
A very relaxing watch.
Thank you again John.
I watched part 1 when I was going to bed, but I remember I had no idea where time went. I watched it for a few minutes and next I knew I was awake for a moment seeing the video had finished... I have absolutely no idea how much time had passed since the video ended
Thanks Mr. Butler.
Love the message. Love brother John...fire the sound guy :-)
Gosh I love John so much. I wish I could meet him
You can. Come to Bakewell. You can register interest here - spiritualunfoldment.co.uk/retreats.html. Phil
Thanks for doing these video clips... just wanted to share my mantra I created for myself... while I breathe in through the nose I have this thought 'stay positive' and while exhaling through the mouth I have this thought 'have trust'
Hi John and Phil.
Wonderful as always! I so need to come to Bakewell to meet you.. I have a very stressful job, this helps me so so much to find peace and support me to put things into perspective xx
Come!

Somebody has commented that common sense these days is (unfortunately)not that common. I see John as a modern day Alan Watts. I'm sure that in years to come more and more people will appreciate his words of wisdom.
Phil you have no idea how many people these videos reach...stunning
World Walker view count 👍
So much wisdom
Thank you.
This really give me good insight on many thing
I'm sad to learn about the amount of purging i need but at the same time i am grateful upon this realization. The teacher has appeared.
I'm sad that someone who's never met you - and whom, in turn, you only know from your computer screen - has, deliberately or not, eroded your self-confidence to the point where you think you need to revamp your entire life and personality. If your flaws are, in fact, as serious as you imagine they are, then I'd hope you'd have had the good and universal, innate common sense to address them without needing to be prompted by an internet guru. But I'm sure they're not, so don't do battle with yourself; it's not a sin to read, watch telly, or have friends.
Thank you mr Butler. May the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob be with you. One-derful instructions. 😇🤩😊
Thank you Both
WOW that was a beautiful feeling when you said something & looked deep into the camera.
Thank you for all
A new video from John...all is well :)
Hi, I'm really enjoying these Video's, they have helped me tremendously! I think you should both have your own TV show, without a doubt! (I do, however find it frustrating at times to hear John, as he is so quietly spoken sometimes and the sound seems to be muffled, with too much bass) Thanks so much for your words of wisdom!
Thank you. Sharing🌎
What a thoroughly pleasant gentleman
was waiting for this
This is really the essence. Pure simplicity and opposite to the complex mentality of our culture. Isn't it simple :-)
❤️ that was / is a meditation in itself 🍀
Wonderful as ever. So, when John says to "look" does he mean meditate with the eyes open? It sounds like that...Please clarify.
Where are you if you are not at the church also love the video thank you for the guidence
Thank you
Great video:)
Was wondering if you had any FREE to watch meditaions?? I cant watch any of these with out the membership fee..Thank you for you wisdom and love!!💜🤗
can you do a video on "the zone" in sports and other activities, and what you think it is?
This man is a genius.
Ian what is your background /how did you get into all this? Maybe we should turn the camera round haha
This is a long shot but is there anyway you can contact John? To write him etc?? Wether be via email or any other way??
Is that a phone with a cord hanging on the wall? What an antique!
Love your videos absolutely love them but just a question or observation per say... Why does your audio sound different from the other videos. Like it doesn't sound as clear. Just wondering. Sorry if i sound ungrateful, that is definitely not my intention.
Simple meditation works 🙂
I'd love a vid 3 hours long...plop the headphones on and float away. It is strange but even if I fell asleep part of my brain can still listen if I ask it to before I close my eyes.
Have you ever seen the movie Being There ? It's all I can think of when I hear the farming reference over and over. Farming instead of gardening.
18:20 Peekaboo! Phil's chuckle is also infectious.
Don't forget music. Music that speaks to you is amazing at keeping the mind from wandering. The key is to have music end at certain point and just stay immersed in silence.
If a glass of warm milk and honey had a voice it would sound just like John Butler.
That's like Maurice Merleau-Ponty's Phenomonolgy of Perception. (It may be the most essential book of serious philosophy of the 20th century, all things considered. Of course, it'd be recommended to expand outside of it. As it would always be. John Rawls, Thomas S. Kuhn, Wittgenstein, [Schopenhauer], Kant, all classics etc... Give Plato's Apology a shot, it's short, and Meno. They're pretty good for introduction to the whole schtick of it. Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics may be better for introduction than his difficult "Metaphysics".)
Hey guys I just had a quick question if not already answered before, but how did you guys meet?
