@@JamesWithee Hi bro, is a year too long for a touch up? for example i want to touch up a black line but the tattoo is a year old will the contrast difference of that touched up line going to be big compared to a year old tattoo?
I think I speak for everyone when I say we’d like to see a day in the life of James in the tattoo shop, or sometype of video to display you doing all of the things you’ve spoken on in your vids
So glad to have another video! Always learning from you! 👌🏼 I want you’re opinion on something. I got my sleeve done last year, and my artist was a guest artist. Loved the outcome of the sleeve but there’s a part in the sleeve where he had to work around another piece from another artist (the tiger if you go and watch my videos) I feel the blending of the two tattoos from the tiger to the acropolis doesn’t blend nicely and it does bother me abit. Since he’s not going to be back for awhile do I go to the shop that I originally got it at and talk with them about a touch up or wait until he comes back and have him touch his own work up again. (I don’t mind paying if I have to because it’s been over a year) Thank you and hope you’re able to shed some light and your professional opinion 🙏🏼👊🏼
That’s a unique situation with no definitively correct answer. If I were u I’d just go with your most regularly visited artist and ask them to blend the tattoos together. They’re more likely to do it for u even if it’s not their original doing since you’ve already collected from them multiple times (if u do indeed have someone like this that u can ask). And it’s convenient for u cuz u don’t have to wait for the other artist to come back. Maybe contact the artist that guest spotted first though and ask them if they’ll be back soon that way you at least give them the chance to do it for u if possible

Got a piece 2 weeks ago and some of the pink in the color didn't get good saturation. I asked the artists if we could just do a darker color over it. Making my appointment tomorrow but he also said he guarantees his work and its free. Edit the piece was fixed yesterday came out great and the artist owned it. He said he tried going too light with the color tone and it just didn't stick.
As a artist no matter how much of a good painting you do you always can comeback and touchup the artwork even after years pass because we see new advances in our art. 👍
Oh you're back! I always enjoy your content :) I can't imagine not wanting to do a free touch-up. I finished a six-session full colour sleeve last winter and after the 5th session, a small but very central part of the piece healed completely wrong (basically the eye of a monster, the first thing your eye is drawn to on my shoulder if I'm wearing a sleeveless shirt, made it look blind instead of a glowing neon blue iris on a dark black cornea, looked like complete ass). I usually heal very well and don't fuck around with new tattoos, so this was a surprise. He fixed it during our last session and it healed just fine on the second try, but had it gotten fucked on the last session and he charged me to fix it... idk man, I probably would have paid anyway because I don't want a shitty-looking tattoo, but I would really question his pride in his work if he was perfectly content with me running around with an obviously fucked up tattoo. I wouldn't want my name attached to something like that and since so many artist recs are word of mouth, well... he'd be ruining his own reputation IMO. I've already had multiple strangers admire the sleeve and ask who did it and this is only its first summer. The artists you talk about at 03:26 sound like arrogant assholes tbh. Blaming the client for something that didn't heal 100% flawlessly... it's skin, not paper, you can follow instructions perfectly and still get a heal that needs a small fix. That's a really good way to encourage your clients to not recommend you to anyone.
aquana I feel u. Yeah it’s always possible for small things to go wrong even if it’s not anyone’s fault. Shit happens. Luckily, most artists care more about the heal than the client does so a free touch up is the norm
I would love to see a video from you on how to keep your tattoo healthy and happy. There are a tons of videos about after care but nothing on long term after care. I invest good money on my tattoos and want to get the most longevity out of them.
You’re always very thorough and concise, much appreciated! I only have a couple tattoos atm but I plan on getting decent coverage and it helps to know what to expect.
Thanks a lot for this info. I hava a question: a friend of mine wants me to rework the line on her freshly made tattoo(2 weeks old) is it safe to do this exactly after the tattoo healed or do i have to wait 3 months? Please answer 🙏🙏
When my husband got his fingers done he was told about how they would probably fall out some. The artist said general shop policy was free touch up until 6 months after, but for fingers they give a free touch up until a year after.
When my artist did my elbows he gave me free touch up up to six months after that I pay. Makes sense though It's a tough spot in general to tattoo but also constant movement will distort it a bit.
Yeah they are but some blowouts are best left alone. Sometimes thickening a line to fix one is worse than just living with it. Especially if it’s in an area where blowouts are common and it might just blowout again with a thicker outline on the second pass
I don't get how someone will ruin their heal. I just sat for 5 hours for my very first tattoo. I love it. The money time and energy on the tattoo is too great to mess this up
I'm late but I clicked right away! Welcome back! Great video topic. My tattoo artist does offer one free touch up within the first year of completion of the tattoo. I'm still a beginner so I know during my healing time, I did cause a few minor scratches. The tattoo is on my right wrist so I'm constantly coming in contact with the area.
My original artist is in the wind...are you able to suggest an artist that is comfortable in touch up. The tat is fading out from age. It's my most favorite
I dont get it...if you know the hands and fingers dont heal properly...why do you charge money for a touch up? I mean..since you know it;s not the clients fault...that seems kinda weird to me. And also..if i pay someone for a tattoo..im expecting them to do it at their full skill potential...not a mediocre tattoo compared to the rest they do. My opinion tho.
Advice for what to do when you get a tattoo from a guest artist but you need a minor touchup from the healing process but said artist is back home across the globe
I have an appointment to start a sleeve. I am a hairstylist so my hands are constantly in water to shampoo my clients. How soon after getting tattooed near lower arm/wrist can I get the tattoo wet? I’m wondering how much time I’ll need to take of work (if any). I’d really appreciate suggestions! :)
My artist does kind of a middle ground. There's like a $50 buck setup fee and then however long it takes it takes. If its 30 minutes for a small tattoo or 3-5hrs for lets say a sleeve touch up it doesn't matter. Just have to cover the shop minimum.
Perfect timing with this video! Do you think it's a good idea to ask your artist to do a touch-up (doesn't matter if it ends up being free or not) when you are already there getting another tattoo from them? I figured it would save breaking down and setting up again down the line, but I was curious is there is something I'm not thinking about that would make it tedious for them. I'm getting my 2nd piece next month but the first one has a tiny spot that didn't take the color and I would love to kill two birds with one stone.
That’s actually my favorite time for clients to ask for a touch up. Like u said I already have all my stuff ready and don’t have to spend money on another setup or schedule a separate appointment. The only exception to that is if the touch up will take a decent amount of time and we’re doing a one shot tattoo that is going to take all day already. If that’s the case I schedule a separate time rather than touching up one tattoo and failing to finish the new one. Still stands that that’s the best time to bring it up though
I've been wondering about this. Mine would benefit from one. It's nothing that noticeable to anyone else but I feel like tiny bits of ink fell out. It's probably slightly my fault cause it went kinda like when you get so sunburnt it peels and i fiddled with it a bit absentmindedly.
I have a tattoo that needs a touch up and I asked the artist about touching up the tattoo. He has yet to respond. I really hope I did not come off as rude when I messaged him about it. If I do not receive a response in the next couple days...would I be wrong to ask another artist in a different shop who has done another tattoo for me to not only touch up some spots but possibly rework the tattoo?
Personally I prefer grey wash, by far. A lot of great color artists do opaque black and white tattoos from time to time, but I suspect it’s simply because they’re more comfortable with the method of application as it’s the same as color. I do a lot of color and a lot of black and grey though, and while it might be fun to do opaques I’d rather just use grey wash cuz it ages better, isn’t as susceptible to adverse effects from sun exposure, and works on more skin types. Opaques are better for cover ups though for sure
i feel like it's pretty arrogant for an artist to say it won't need a touch up period. biology isn't always predictable. also just a nice courtesy to give the client peace of mind and maintain a good relationship... i'll do my absolute best to heal correctly and i'd hope that the artist gives me the same courtesy in keeping it looking good. the fact that it isn't 100% required makes me appreciate it that much more and want to invest more money in them if they do. also always tip your artist, especially for a free session! (extenuating circumstances aside of course) PS welcome back and let dat sweet kitty boi in!
lol I can’t let him in when I’m doing stuff like this. He doesn’t even like when I’m reading or looking at my phone. To him my hands are for petting and playing only, and my voice is only meant for praising his developing athleticism and flawless use of the litter box. Better that than the type of cat that hides all day coming out only to eat though haha
How often do you get touch ups ? My colour tattoos are almost 3 years old while my black ones are 4-5 years old. I often wear sunscreen but before / after swimming I don't bother because the chlorine washes it off. I swim a lot. I do exfoliate and shave my tattoos. So my tattoos are in good condition. How often do you refresh yours ?
@@JamesWithee I am genetically Indian so of the tattoos I have, the white (lightsabres: Palpatine vs Yoda, eyes: Gohan) and the black (Gohan's hair, the background of the Sidious - Yoda duel), and yellow (Sidious' eyes) have a slight brown tinge to them. I'm not as dark as a South Indian or an African but I look Arab. Tattooist said people with darker skin need multiple applications
I was wondering what was taking the guy so long and when he would start . So I finally look and he is a few lines deep and I didn't know because I couldn't Feel it
Great video. Awesome tattoo shop, from the quality of work to the overall vibe. I’ve got 8 tattoos done here and I plan on coming back for more. Looking forward to the next video!
I just got a Berserk's Brand of Sacrifice as my 4th tattoo on the side, on the ribs. Overall it looks great. But on one of the lines in the middle it just *looks* odd, like the whole straight in the middle can look a bit crooked even when my body is straight. This is rather small imperfection, but do you think i should ask for a touch up somehow? Or you think we can blow it and i should stop being such a perfectionist?
what if your artist is booked out months in advance and the touch of you require is of multiple large pieces. My tattoo aritist doensnt live in the country i live in
Thanks! That’s means a lot. Although the idea that these videos are helping to shape the industry in some way kinda scares me lol I’m not the best ambassador by any means
I have a tattoo that needs to be completely gone over not a touch-up I started this tattoo years ago with a homemade gun on my knee cap I gaulded part of the skin and it wouldn't take ink now that it's healed over so many years will that gaulded skin take ink now
Can you do a video on how to find a good artist in the Clients area? How a person of color should go about looking/picking a tattoo artist when most artists don’t always have or show their work on a person of color? And how to map out or plan a leg or arm sleeve?
Aniyah Carr I‘ve talked about some of these things in my other videos but I’ll make note of the stuff u mentioned that I haven’t covered yet and try to get em in somewhere
James Withee thank you it’s kind of hard looking for a artist that can work on my skin but doesn’t show that they can and I’ll go look at your older videos for some info.
This is a fantastic question! I’ve been finding it fairly difficult to find someone and I just got the tattoo based off of their word that they’ve had experience tattooing a Black person.🤷🏾♀️ I opted not to get color in my tattoos though because I don’t want tattoos where the color is muted.
I just got a tattoo last week and I work outside working with propane cylinders in the heat of Texas. The first day felt like it was horrible since I was sweating so bad, but a week later I think I can say that’s starting it’s coming along nicely.
If u wanna be really safe, a week so it is finished peeling and sweat / bacteria from attics and ladders don’t ruin the heal. I’d say minimum 2 or 3 days though so the wound is at least sealed with scabs. Wear loose fitting clothing that covers the tattoo and try to take it easy if u gotta work though. Just be the guy that drags ass for a few days as long as it won’t get u fired
Theres so many more variables than people realize too. Everyone heals so differently. My arm ditch was so weird, every single line that was hit 2 times or maybe 3 times would have so much ink fallout. Happened several times and only in that spot.
This helps me a lot since I did get my first tattoo three weeks from when I wrote this comment. I am going in for a touch up this upcoming week and it is free, and I was wondering if I should tip them or not. If I do so, how much would you say I should tip my artist? It's a decent size tattoo on my right inner forearm (a Cross paint brush style).
Who WANTS to get a touch up? When it’s necessary sure, but I would never neglect my heal bc a touch up is possible. Why put your body through two heal processes when you can just take care of it the first time? Honest question
I dunno. I’ve noticed that when I mention that there is a free touch up included ppl have a higher frequency of bad heals. Knowing that there is a safety net makes ppl tread less carefully
Let's say after a long time, my tattoo has faded quite a lot and by that time, my artist has retired. Do you have any advices if I want to do a touch up?
Great to see you back bro, quick question I got an awesome tattoo sleeve done and I’m very happy with it. The only issue is that most of the white lines / white highlights have turned to a brown color. Is this normal? Can it be touched up? What could be the cause? Love your videos man! Great to finally have you back!
It’s prolly cuz your skin produces melanin to bring itself back to its normal tone to protect against uv rays. Happens on ppl with tan skin or white ppl that get in the sun a lot soon after the heal. U can go over the white again but the same thing may happen. Hard to say
Might be off-topic hope u don't mind: Just wants to ask for your own thoughts on a session i did with another artist (no names here) , since all your videos, I think your opinions are pretty fair. Drove 2 hours from LA to SD, worth, since i love his work, was informed he charges $150 / hr, or, (about $700) for 2 cats portraits (3" x 3"). Get there, end up we agreed on doing just one as he said the other cat he wants more time on the design, cool, as he will be in LA soon, finished the first cat, 3 hrs passed included breaks here and there + drawing out the design in the beginning, the first cat's done, he asked if I wanna get another small flash of his for what we agreed w/ 2 cats, $700, wasn't thinking much so we did, flash took 30 mins, had him kept the $40 deposit as a tip, left nicely. Understood it's my responsibility for agreeing before starting the 2nd flash, just that afterward I feel like its kinda tricky for the whole session. It went from $700 for 2 cat portraits => one cat + a flash that takes 30 mins and because he wants more time on the design even we had talked about the design in DMs before me making the drive. long story short, here's the question, do most of the time 'drawing out designs', breaks etc are normally included in a hourly charged session? Ended up getting other ones from other stores, artist have me wait in a lil wait area before going in, for them to draw out the design before starting, quote before the session, getting a price range ($250-280, ended up 280 which is totally cool with $50 tip) love how it's straight forward, simple. love the art, price ok, lets do it, good time, done. Last, just wants to get your opinion in this if possible. "is it tricky, or am just being a lil b... be honest please, i can take it haha. Btw loves your videos, and all the tattoo advices.
It’s hard to say what’s right and wrong here. Maybe the artist should’ve prepared more ahead of time and didn’t realize that until it was too late and delayed the second cat cuz they wanted to do their best on it. Maybe they sold u on the flash to try to make your trip worthwhile. As far as the hourly, some artists charge for the whole process, most only charge for tattooing. Hope that helps
Good to see you again James. I have a question regarding touch ups. How picky can a client be without pissing off the tattooer? I went in to have my second sleeve finished (or was supposed to be anyways) by the same artist a few weeks ago, but there's about 5 spots that I'd like to get filled in a bit more/darkened up cause they just don't look right after the heal. The last session was already a bit of a touch up one, along with finishing off the top of the shoulder. So he only charged me for the few hours he worked on the shoulder. Would I be asking too much by wanting another touch up session? Defiantly not satisfied by how it's looking right now, but at the same time don't wanna be the client who's super picky and a pain in the ass. I did tip the guy pretty good on both sleeves
It kinda depends on the circumstance. If you’ve already done a touch up session, there’s a good chance you’re artist already thinks your tattoo is as good as they can possibly make it. As long as you’re polite when u ask and the things you are talking about will actually help the piece, you’ll be fine. Just be prepared to pay if you’re artist decides it isn’t really a touch up, but another pass that enhances rather than restores

Can you talk about white ink on dark skin? (If that’s even possible?)
He did that already
This was informative. How effective can a cover up actually be at bringing the tattoo back to 100% when you have a rough heal?
I want to get a tattoo on the upper left corner on my back do you think it will hurt?
I was wondering what was taking the guy so long and when he would start . So I finally look and he is a few lines deep and I didn't know because I couldn't Feel it
i fucking love cats.
When you say “fingers”. Do you mean like when girls get a stupid word on the side of the finger, or the front knuckles?
Hey James good job man. Do you have any video referring to how to avoid and recognice overwork? Keep up !
Dropping Knowledge!! 💪🏽
It's nice to see the you're back!
Great video. Awesome tattoo shop, from the quality of work to the overall vibe. I’ve got 8 tattoos done here and I plan on coming back for more. Looking forward to the next video!
Nice who’s your artist?
I charge full price for fingers, hands, ellbows, palms and feet. Most times the clients decide not to get the tattoo on those areas because of this
I just got a Berserk's Brand of Sacrifice as my 4th tattoo on the side, on the ribs.
My tattoo aritist doensnt live in the country i live in
Yet again, another good video. You've done so much for the industry. Thank you.
Thanks! That’s means a lot. Although the idea that these videos are helping to shape the industry in some way kinda scares me lol I’m not the best ambassador by any means
informative videos, but i don't get why hes so serious...especially with tattoos... It doesn't hurt if you smile here and there
I'm subbed and it didn't notify me you posted another video. Had to press that bell icon. Hopefully that works.
What about a realism tattoo that healed really light compared to other tats on my forearm? would that be a touch up?
Strange how the algorithm sent me this when I'm about to get my touch up later this week.
If you were tattooed by someone who isn't licences and works from home can you get a touch up by someone else who works in a shop and has a licence?
can i touch up 2 times? please answer because my tattoo doesn’t look the way i want it to look
Im an Electrician a physically demanding job that makes you sweat. when i get a new tattoo how soon should i wait to go back to work?
@@JamesWithee thanks james
It baffles that people would spend thousands of dollars on tattoos and then not take care of them.
So good you are back!
(For some reason, UA-cam showed me the next video before this one.)
Be safe & all the best from Germany!
Theres so many more variables than people realize too. Everyone heals so differently. My arm ditch was so weird, every single line that was hit 2 times or maybe 3 times would have so much ink fallout. Happened several times and only in that spot.
Where can i visit your tattoo clinic...
Here in Montreal Quebec?
You are a very cool tattooer! I wish you were closer to where I live...I am in another country but would like you to tattoo me.
has anyone told you 25 second video intros are way too long ?
Can u plzzzzz do a video explaining hand and finger tattoos and how to prepare for them bc I want one but at the same time idk
With touch ups are the healing process the same as when you got the tattoo originally
thank you
Great information James!! I was kinda wondering on the touch up/add on for a tattoo.
How long you need to wait to touch up your tattoo from the day you got it?
Why did you stop tattooing fingers?
can you make a video on tattoo aftercare please?🙌🏼🙌🏼
That Wolverine piece is a Masterpiece good job
Who WANTS to get a touch up? When it’s necessary sure, but I would never neglect my heal bc a touch up is possible. Why put your body through two heal processes when you can just take care of it the first time? Honest question
I dunno. I’ve noticed that when I mention that there is a free touch up included ppl have a higher frequency of bad heals. Knowing that there is a safety net makes ppl tread less carefully
Question: how long does a touch up healing stage usually last? Same as when u 1st got it or less?
I always love watching your videos
In my city it's 30 dollars & up
That 1 dead pixel......
harrison xu It’s dust on my lens cuz I ain’t been posting
What if I just need a touch up on a 20 year old tattoo
I literally was wondering when you’d upload again just the other day
Let's say after a long time, my tattoo has faded quite a lot and by that time, my artist has retired. Do you have any advices if I want to do a touch up?
Gotta find a new artist and pay for it unfortunately
Great to see you back bro, quick question I got an awesome tattoo sleeve done and I’m very happy with it. The only issue is that most of the white lines / white highlights have turned to a brown color. Is this normal? Can it be touched up? What could be the cause?
Love your videos man! Great to finally have you back!
It’s prolly cuz your skin produces melanin to bring itself back to its normal tone to protect against uv rays. Happens on ppl with tan skin or white ppl that get in the sun a lot soon after the heal. U can go over the white again but the same thing may happen. Hard to say
Another great video! Glad to have you back!
I've missed your videos! welcome back! 😭
Might be off-topic hope u don't mind:
Just wants to ask for your own thoughts on a session i did with another artist (no names here) , since all your videos, I think your opinions are pretty fair.
@@JamesWithee Definitely, thanks for the reply and thoughts. Fair enough
Where can I find u to get a tattoo😂
