@@ye23. A DO is a medical doctor in all manners of the term. Only difference really is that DO's try to take more of a holistic approach to medicine compared to the classical allopathic MD (trying to suggest more natural lifestyle changes to tackle various issues rather than just throwing drugs at it), though that's something that MDs are adopting more and more now too, and the primary difference is that DO's learn an extra bit of techniques known as Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy, which in the simplest of terms is essentially a hybrid of Physical Therapy and Chiropractic procedures (this oversimplification doesn't do it justice, but it's the best that I can explain it without launching into a multi-volume rant).
But yeah, being in a DO school myself, we still get taught all manner of physiology, anatomy, pathology, and pharmacology by DOs, MDs, and practicing clinicians, and we take essentially identical board exams. MDs have to take steps 1-3 of USMLE, and DOs have COMLEX Levels 1 and 2. However, DOs are also allowed to take USMLE with the MDs, and in doing so, can be eligible for the same MD Residency matches. But downside is that if there is any bit of a "boys club" mentality in various residencies and specialties, then DOs are at a severe disadvantage just due to human bias.

So, I’m a DO medicine physician. The reality is that about 95% in my class tried for a MD school and we never got in (including me). The majority of us will never admit it, but it’s true. Thank you for admitting the obvious. I think some of the criteria medical schools use for admitting people is rather self-defeating. There are those who are book smart and have all the highest scores, but they have zero common sense or they have the wrong personality traits that a good physician needs. Some of the people most suited to be doctors aren't accepted for one reason or another and instead go to DO schools and become excellent physicians. I went to one of the top MD schools, and I had classmates whom I would keep anyone I cared for away from. They were absolutely brilliant, but they didn't have the magic ingredient that makes for a good doctor. One of the most brilliant people in my class was smart to the point of being stupid. And in my residency, one of the very best classmates was a DO.

also, Hasan's doctor WIFE should have warned him..but seems he didn't even bother to consult her. or maybe he did but she just decided to let him look ridiculous??..but had he done so, if she had any sense, anyway, she would have reminded him about who she has to either work with and/or deal with professionally.

I'm a DO. It is true that MOST DO students were in a lower scoring percentile on their MCAT when applying for medical school. Dumb? No. Lower score? Yes. It's a crude weed-out system that is not great, but with the number of applicants each year for medical school, it's the best we have. It is not a test to determine how good a doctor you will be but how well you learn for the purposes of test taking. Fair enough. Med schools want the students with the highest possibility of graduating or else they lose money when you drop out. I don't blame them. I think everybody knows that good test takers don't automatically become good doctors. I'm 55 years old and a surgeon. I've seen good DO's and bad DO's. I've seen good MD's and bad MD's. MD and DO med school teaching/testing is the same. There are even classes that we take together at the same time with the same tests and so on. I had clinical rotations with MD's and MD's did rotations with me. I think the biggest difference is that our learning styles are different, which may bleed into our medical practice style. Possibly, the DO learning style is a bit less didactic and a bit more interactive - as is real life. Now that's a real stretch but there is a difference between the two groups. Both have the ability to make GREAT doctors and both have the ability to have mediocre doctors with the same degree. The MCAT joke was probably more true than not true and it appears to have struck a nerve with some of my colleagues but hey - focus on treating people, that's where the true judgment lies. Cheers!

We also do heart surgery, brain surgery and ALL the other surgeries known to man. The MD's are also taught manipulative medicine to an extent, but it is called something like physical mechanics or structural kinetics etc. Like I said in the above post, it is really about the difference in learning styles and how we use that knowledge in our practice.

In my DO graduating class, we had multiple students get into competitive MD residencies -Including Harvard Anesthesia, Orthopedics, John Hopkins ER, UC San Diego, etc. The MCAT admissions criteria may be true by few percentile points, but not enough to actually make a real world difference in outcomes, certainly doesn't determine the quality of the doctor. Sometimes the problem is just "Learning how to learn", i.e. take tests, which I believe can be taught. Also, there's quite a bit of nepotism in professional schools and I know two mediocre students who got into prestigous MD programs due to family connections.

Look... mostly I agree with you, but the trouble with a modern DO is the history of DOs. Their existence is rooted in the unwillingness of a certain part of the medical community to practice based on evidence and to maintain some quack practices. These are no longer a major part of a modern good (and I include this qualifier very intentionally) DO program. The current problem with an excellent modern DO is that their very existence acts as apologetics for practitioners that are... shall we say, less grounded in evidence. Good DO programs would probably be doing the world a favor if they kept teaching as they are but converted to MD programs to cleanly sever themselves from some of the historical DO nonsense. But then again, it's not like the history of MD programs is squeaky clean either, but their more egregious teachings are a bit further in the past.

To Hasan's comments about NPs and such, there is a difference between skill level of MDs and NPs that make the value they bring to the medical field inherently different. It seems like he knows some MDs don't like NPs because NPs claim to provide the same level of care. So, Ken being a critical thinker, extrapolated on that to include all of society instead of just the medical professions. Since, it's true. As a DO married to another DO who has always loved & respected your work, I appreciate the over-arching message of your appearance on Jimmy Fallon. Your life was altered in the best way possible by a DO’s work!! Also, how you worked it out it in San Fran was dope as hell. Thank you for bringing this issue to light, especially when medical practitioners are in such short supply.
Other than MCAT score (ha,ha) the major difference in our education is that in addition to the standard medical education of biochem, human anatomy, pathology, different procedures & specialties, etc., we spend several hours in lecture and upwards of 5 hours each week in lab learning much more in-depth about the musculoskeletal system, how it relates to our nervous system, immune system, digestion, cardiovascular & other bodily systems. Then we learn how to diagnose & correct any dysfunction using manual medicine - using our hands to manipulate & correct dysfunction , reducing pain & returning the patient to a healthier state of well-being.
Just thought you & your audience might like to know why DO’s are so distinctive & fantastic at health maintenance.
Peace to your and your lovely family.

There is such a toxic heirarchy in medicine and it's one of the only things I truly hate about my job. I work at a well-known medical institution and the sheer amount of ego that I have to deal with on a daily basis is INSANE. Even just among my fellow pharmacy technicians. Like, people literally don't even know we exist and some of my coworkers feel like they're someone important because there's a fancy name on their paystubs. That's to say nothing of the people who have actual degrees and all sorts of fancy letters after their names. And it seems like the more credentials, the more fragile the ego.
I'm not saying everyone in medicine is like this and I know I see a disproportionate amount because of where I work, but it seems that the overinflated, fragile egos are also the most vocal - especially if they perceive a slight against them. It's exhausting and it really needs to stop because this field is stressful enough without having to worry about tripping over someone's ego.

Among people without an advanced degree, "doctor" is commonly used as a substitute for someone who provides general human medical care. People that have advanced degrees tend to respect each other and call each other doctor irrespective of what they are a doctor of, be it philosophy (PhD), podiatry, or dentistry.

Anything less than a sincere apology in which he admits that we are equals rather than inferior is unacceptable. Some people may have used DO schools because they had lower MCATs, but others (like myself) actually wanted to be DOs. I didn’t apply to any MD schools because I wanted to learn the manipulation and have a more holistic education. I did a MD residency and am board certified in my field. I understand both sides of the argument here, it’s a great joke. But I also understand where the DOs are coming from. I don’t think it’s much about the MCAT score or that they have lower stats than MD counterparts, but rather that it creates mistrust in patients and the medical community because they believe “DOs are not even real doctors”. The general public doesn’t know much about the requirements for a medical degree or that MD/DO are equal in practices and training. I think that’s where the frustration is. I know the majority of MD and DO medical students don’t mention the MCAT score because once you’re in, you’re in, the MCAT plays little role if not nothing in what happens next. Some of the messages that were sent to him stated the fact that his statement can cause mistrust not anything about their stats. That’s just my take on why this was a big issue.

The existence of DO as a separate things is rooted in part of the medical community rejecting evidence based medicine and so a modern evidence based DO program... you would think they would want to distance themselves from that past rather than to say constantly how they are about the same as MDs...which acts to excuse former practices in people's minds by implying DOs have always been like MDs (which isn't the case).
