My John Deere skid steer bucket tilt cylinders are leaking down internally I think and might need a seal replacement sooner rather than later. I say I think the cylinders seals might need replacement because it could be something else, I just don’t know enough about hydraulic systems to say anything for sure. I do have one attachment pin on the bottom right side that is rusted in and won’t move even after using an impact gun on it. I haven’t tried heating the area yet but it looks like I may have to, not real wild about heating because I know you can really screw up metal properties by heating it, depends on the part I suppose. I even though about just leaving the bottom attached, the rod end, and do it the hard way.
This video pair, part 1 & 2 have been a big help in understanding what is involved.
    Thanks Warren! :)

Great video. Never rebuilt a hydraulic cylinder and had to do the boom and dipper cylinder on my 69 case 580ck backhoe. After watching you rebuild them i wasnt intimidated as I was before , they are pretty simple. Thanks for all the how to videos im learning alot from watching you.

My boss made me (no option to say no lol) rebuild a 3 stage telescoping cylinder for the bin truck, never rebuilt a hydraulic cylinder before, shafts are all pitted a few divots and gouges. Cleaned everything up the best I could installed the new seals and slapped it back together. It took me a 3 days or had other shit to work on in between. The toughest part was the collar nuts on barrels they were tight coming apart and just as much as a pain in the ass going back together.

Seal twister works great on rod seals. Can’t wait to see you in the new truck

Warren, great job and thank you for all of the video's.
I see you're struggling with the seals ( the blue ones), I put them boiling water and then they are a bit more flexibel and go in easier.
Thanks for all the knowledge you share with us and keep up the good work!

Great video....We had that happen on a hydraulic cylinder on my submarine in the Navy....The only repair was to re chrome it in the shipyard...You are correct that was the only good repair.

There’s perfect repairs, common sense repairs, and hack repairs. This is a common sense repair. I buffed a pretty bad gouge in the angle cylinder on my garden tractor blade and resealed it. It was probably a tenth of an inch deep. It leaks a bit traveling past that spot, but 98% of the time it’s straight or fully angled, and the gouge is between those two positions. It’s been 5 years, and the seals are still leak free in any other position. $5 in seals vs $400 for a cylinder...not a perfect repair, but it’s common sense. Probably lost a cup of oil in 5 years.

Hi warren I’m working on John Deere 6200 lifting cylinder third point I already removed the snap ring but it does not come out, will I have to hit it harder to get it out or does it have another snap ring that is stopping it?

Hi warren, when I was with cat we could get reman rods which were really worthwhile or we just re-rod and re chromed either way was still cheaper than a new rod, absolutely enjoying your vids

Warren, I thought you would have a 'C' spanner set to tighten the cylinder end caps instead of stilton pipe wrench? Good show.

Great Video Warren!! There's always a balance to be struck between making a perfect repair and making a reliable, affordable repair. If you drop a expensive new ram on it, whose to say a rock doesn't nail the new one 3 days later?? Why did you buy another lift? I thought you were trying to talk yourself out of repairing pick-up trucks. (Sorry the devil made me ask) Hope repairs on your new Service Truck are coming along Ok. Best of Luck

Hiya Warren, another great video as always. Question and this may seem a silly one but going to ask it anyways. For the buffer seal I realise as it is a sliding seal but does it have a right and wrong way to go in? eg is the seal itself angled so has to be put in facing a certain way so to speak or does it not matter?. You can read as many books as you like have as many degrees as you like. But, nothing will ever bet experience. Thank you for all you do and share with us all :)

The EPA has nearly shut down the chrome companies. They’ve made so difficult to do business due to over regulation just like everything else nothing can be common sense.

At least when you clean up the rod, the new seal won't get knicked. In other words, it's better than doing nothing...
