Phonte Coleman is easily the hardest emcees to ascend out of N.C. and the genre period. Pooh is a giant in his own right. While I see the growth for these two I don’t see that with 9th so much. May the Lord Watch is a classic
@@inspireupliftmotivate no he wasn’t. His pinnacle was Threat for Jay Z he even fumbled the Black Thought project IMO. What Rapsody? C’mon Phonte has grown past 9th as a producer
I’m the best out of NC first and secondly they claim my city and none of them are from my city! They went to school in my city at NCCU but they not from Durham!
I am blessed to say that I grew up around Phonte's energy since we were children rapping in my parents home as teens as I spent wax instrumentals that He, Kieon, Ray, Dricie, etc. all rapped over and he never failed to deliver as a family member, as a friend, & in those musical moments. I'm very proud of your cousin... keep it going. "M!X$H!¥aH"
I was just bumping The listening in my headphones while mowing the lawn......i just remembered thats what their Justus League fan forum was called The Lawn.....timeless
Firstly LB is 1 of my all time favorite groups period! I l discovered them during my senior year in high school back in 05. Coming across The Listening, which was released 2 years prior. As a graduation gift in 05. I received Chitlin Circuit 1.5 from a friend of mine. Instantly became my favorite mixtape of all time! I always treated that mixtape more like an album. Simple because it was put out like 1. The songs had remixes of course. But none of the beats were recycled beats from other producers. It was mainly in-house excluding Illmind. Which was also, low key responsible for that LB sound. And 2, it was purchased from a music store (Sam Goody) 😂 I’m showing my age. Anyway. That “mixtape ” is my favorite album, with the listening and the minstrel show coming really close to it. 1 thing you missed which also is a top favorite of mine from them. Was Separate But Equal mixtape with DJ Drama! How’d you miss that!? That was the 1 mixtape that turned heads! Even for the “industry”. Drama was doing something totally different and still they all made as Gem 💎 with that. Anyway. Dope vid. Can’t wait until the official documentary is put out by Phonte himself. 🔥
This group is legendary, I’m upset at myself for discovering them in 2017 . Watch me was the first song I’ve heard When that uhhh baby drop I was like ohhh shit ! And from there I was hook every little brother track is gold there is not a single song I don’t like . I don’t skip their intros every second is gold 🙏🏽
Little Brother is one of the greatest hip hop groups/duos of all time. Phonte & Big Pooh should get the same love and respect, that OutKast get's, but that's just my opinion.
First off great vid. I've been listening to little brother since 2004. A friend of mine introduced them to me. Important to note that I feel they flipped the script for southern hip hop. I feel southern hip hop has been pigeon hold to certain sound and little brother said were going to do our own thing. I fell they also may have paved the way for j cole. Also I really hope to see a full little brother reunion in the future.
Right on time, been in my Little Brother bag for about a month now. Literally was listening to the “Hall Of Justus” album before coming on my lunch break to see you posted this.
This was a really great video! I've been a Little Brother fan ever since I was a senior in college. Which was 20 years ago! That makes me feel so old lol. I just love what you're doing with this channel. Your videos are definitely the kinda content that I like to watch on the days when I'm not creating content.
This was a great video, but I think you could've touched a bit more on the original "Chiltlin' Circuit" mixtape, before 1.5. I also didn't see any mention of the "Separate But Equal" mixtape with DJ Drama, which I don't think anyone saw coming, especially with a collaboration with Bun B. Regardless, I'll keep an eye out for more of your content.
Tribe of the south IMO. Them and Def jux...grateful. As an extrovertical introvert, these collectives..oh snap, hieroglyphics as well. Basically, sanity and not feeling alone while "listening" alone. God bless music.
Thank you for this. Tigger and Rapper are incredible. 9th is a god producer. My second favourite group after Blackstar. The Justice League made my High School tenure memorable.
Oh for real?! Yes!! Man Little Brother was one group I put on mixes I knew I had to get other folks hooked on. This is rad! Thanks for making cool stuff like this.
One of the most beautifull moments of my childhood was listening that two classics albums. The listening and the minstrel show. Thnk for that. Phonte is just awesome. Singing and rapping
Thank you for doing this story on LB they dont get the recognition they truly deserve but their are diehard fans that really respect their body of work which speaks for itself Salute Phonte Big Poo along with Ninth Wonder
A live all 90/2000 era, damn... what a remember.. i see Little Brother live in my city in Italy.. i think Little Brother is the continuos of sound like Mood and Hi Tek.
I've been a fan of the whole Justus League since the early 2000s. Also a native NC resident, I watched them be systematically suppressed for the "dumbing down" of black culture. While Phonte is one of the greatest rappers of our time, other members like Median and definitely L.E.G.A.C.Y. should have ended up in serious GOAT status conversations. Listen to S.O.S., King of NC, Dirty Bomb, Nice, Comfortable, What it is w/ Edgar Allen Poe, Pardon Me Dude, Visionary, ...etc, and tell me anything different.
What's the worst thing about it was that, on some black culture stuff, it was our turn. We know what all the other groups of black people in America are about through their music. You know what Atlanta and Georgia rappers are about because of their era. We know what Miami about, because of people like Uncle Luke and Trick Daddy. They had their era, when they were popping and the best out there. We know what St Louis about. We know what Chicago about. We definitely know what NY and Philly and LA and Oakland about. I don't besmirch people like J Cole and DaBaby, but they don't really represent the average NC brother that was born and raised here, is like. Justus League would have done that. Even cat's like Joe Scudda was the real deal. It's tragic.
Don’t forget that there was the original version of “The Chittlin’ Circuit” that came out a year before the “1.5” version. I used to play that all the time until 1.5 came out.
Agreed. I remember reading about it in XXL, which the mixtape garnered an "XXL" rating. I think that's when the hype really started to catch on. I was stationed in S. Korea at the time. I tracked down a copy and basically kept it on repeat. It's still heavy in my personal rotation. Too many classics.

Maaaaaan, I really thought LB would be more positively received by the masses when I heard The Listening. Either way I’m still bumping their tracks in 2023. Super appreciative of the artistry they blessed this planet with.
I hoped at the time when their debut album dropped that they would be in it for the long run. Now look at them so many years later. Ninth has become the top producer I hoped he would become, Phonte and Pooh are together again. Heartwarming story and hopefully all three of them will continue to make relevant music as they have done over the years. Great video, this one.
