Another super helpful video. Thanks! I cannot express strongly enough how wonderful it is to have an actual first grade teacher sharing exactly what she's doing and why.
I love your content so much! I am new to teaching first grade (taught K for a long while) and I am finding your content so realistic, so helpful and so informative! Thank you for making such intentional and down-to-earth content! You are amazing!
All of your ideas are awesome and I take lots of notes! I teach Kindergarten so would love more ideas about how to use/adapt these activities and lessons for them.
I have been following you for years. I consider you a virtual mentor as your videos have helped me improve my teaching over the years. I am truly interested in the writing folder, could you link the pages that's in it?
The white writing folders? Inside we have a Fundations based sound wall for students to refer to and a Fundations aligned heart word reference sheet. Unfortunately, I cannot share those because I didn't make them and they use Fundations images! On the back we have our CUPS editing sheet though that we refer to all the time. That is free here: bit.ly/SJTCUPS
We usually have our Back to School Night/ Open House as early as possible (September. 10) so it’s more of an introduction as opposed to waiting a few weeks which parents sometimes want to talk about their children- becomes more like a conference.
Love your videos as usual. I started using your blending lines last year in the fluency folder during reading group time. My question is do you leave every single blending lines the group has worked on in the folder or do you switch them out each week? I have been taking them out each time we are done with the skill. Wondering if I should be leaving them in. Thanks
Great question! I keep some of them in, but not all!! So when we're doing CVC words, I will leave one in there for them (a more difficult one, usually) then one for digraphs, blends, etc. They can take the others home and practice at home!
Thank you for all your videos! I am a visual learner and it really helps to see how you teach writing. Do you have a sequence and timeline of what you teach and when you teach it? This would be great!
Hi Susan, this question doesn’t go along with your current video, but a wondering thought I had…do you send home homework - weekly or daily? I used to send home a packet on Monday and due by Friday along with books at their reading level to practice with family each night - same scenario, select them on Monday and bring back Friday. My colleagues do not send anything home. What are your thoughts? I like my families to be able to see what their child is working on and can do, but now rethinking this whole thing. Do you do weekly spelling tests and if you do do you send the words home each week for practice? Just curious about your thoughts on this at the first grade level…
Where is the sentence writing for the turtle and the other one you mentioned with the two sentences in the literacy club? Thanks YOur video was amazing!!!
I love the fluency folder idea! Do 2nd grade teachers use one as well? Do you have to add the paper each time or are your kids able to do it? Those prongs can be tricky! LOL And do you have tips for sub plans? especially when you are out unexpectedly? (also wondering if you have to explain where and how to get out all the morning choices to start the day? Or do the kids just know where things are and get them out themselves?)
We add about one thing per week throughout the year (blending lines, poems, and decodable passages). That way they can build and review skills throughout the year as the practice their fluency! As they come over to the small group table and we add our first papers in there, I teach each student to do it. It takes them a bit at first, but most of them want to do it themselves throughout the year lol! So I let them! As for sub plans, my only tip is to have some "emergency" sub plans ready - and honestly, I don't make them super detailed because their meant for emergencies or last minute plans. Since I plan using slides, my days are already ready to go for the whole week. So all I did, was quickly look through my slides and write notes for my sub for each one. Then, I have my student sheets in my weekly planning folders already so things are ready to go! Students know where to get each toy and where to put them back. They're all over in the same area, they can just only use certain ones each week!
You're awesome! We are using UFLI for phonics and I'm finding it so dry, boring, and the kids have ants in their pants. How do you like fundations? How do the kids like it?
It's just as dry as UFLI lol, but the slides help move things along at a quicker pace and I add in little games and partner work at the end of most lessons to "spice it up"
We are only piloting the knowledge portion of EL education, so we are using the lessons in their entirety each and every day without skipping anything! We are using Fundations for our phonics block (and were always going to as we didn't like the EL skills) so if we adopt this, we will continue to use Fundations. As far as the writing goes, we still have that block in our day so we are using writing lessons to give students that explicit writing instruction that EL is missing. Most of us in the districty have been trained in SRSD writing and would layer that on top of any program we choose to adopt. I don't think we will have any problem identifying student growth since we are not cutting anything from our pilot and we are adding in what we would normally add anyways! I hope that makes sense.
I bought your math slides, and there is only one slide per lesson. I thought I was getting all the slides in lessons as I see in your video. I was super disappointed 😞
Hi! When you click on that image, you will receive all the slides for that lesson as well as every activity to go along with them! There are 6 slides per skill and there are currently 33 skills, so in total you have 198 slides. That doesn’t include all the printable sheets as well!

Hi! Those writing pages are all in the SJT Writing Club! They're the "Foundational Lessons"
I love the fluency folder idea! Do 2nd grade teachers use one as well? Do you have to add the paper each time or are your kids able to do it? Those prongs can be tricky! Can u share some of your healthy lunch ideas
My usual healthy lunch is yogurt with granola and berries and honey or an adult "lunchable" with cheese, crackers, vegetables and more!
You're awesome! We are using UFLI for phonics and I'm finding it so dry, boring, and the kids have ants in their pants. How do you like fundations? How do the kids like it?

Do you have a SEL unit, with suggested books? If not, us that something you can put together?
Hi Sylvia! I don't at this time - I am sorry for any inconvenience!
I would like to know what product you are using for social studies. You mentioned Karen Jones. Is it the little social studies thinkers bundle?
Hello there
You are supplementing so much to the program that you are piloting. How will you know students’ true progress using the program?
We are only piloting the knowledge portion of EL education, so we are using the lessons in their entirety each and every day without skipping anything! We are using Fundations for our phonics block (and were always going to as we didn't like the EL skills) so if we adopt this, we will continue to use Fundations. Yes, makes total sense. Thank you.
@@jenniferbalfour8870hi there
Can you share where I can find the letter names and sounds Roll and Race that you showed in the fluency folders? Thank-you!
Those are in my SJT Literacy Club right now under the fluency category!
Where can I find the journal you talked about in the video where they cross off the letter sounds?
Hello 👋
where do i find the math slides and activities? thank you
Where can I find your number bond sheets?
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hi @wendlit
I purchased the math slides $15.00 having trouble putting it into my drive.
With each skill there will be a set of slides for you to copy into your Google Drive and save!
