So like... I didn't get it until a few times in, but the writing is secretly genius. Vesperia is written by Karol. It's vague when he doesnt know that's up. It paints Yuri as the most badass, heroic guy Karol can imagine. Rita is the real protagonist - she solves every problem in the game, but Karol doesn't like her, so she's always doing it in the background.

this video was amazing dude. that hour went by so quickly. 🙏 hoping for a similar video for Symphonia even though this one looks like it took crazy man hours
So I contest that Genis was not fun to play in Symphonia. If you play the Gamecube version, you could have Genis use Randomizer and abuse spell cancelling with guard to make him rain unlimited instant cast meteors. I think they removed this from the Playstation version which is pretty sad. For Collette, she is also busted since once you get the angel form you can abuse spell cancel to effectively give her an infinite. Sheena can also do the same thing. Similar to how Vesperia at a high level requires abusing free run cancel in the non-Xbox version, Symphonia you could cancel pretty much any animation with spell cast into guard which allows you to do some pretty hilarious stuff if you use it right.
I completely agree with everything you said. I still enjoyed Vesperia, but it’s the most overhyped game in the series. 30 hours of “I need to fix a fountain” isn’t going to result in a good story. I still can’t believe there’s people insisting it’s not only the best Tales game, but the best game period?? 😂😂😂
Just discovered this channel on a 5 hour drive for work, knocked out the grandia retrospective and a majority of this, keep it up man this longform stuff is great, and the effort you put into is noticed and definitely sets you apart from other similar content creators.
In capua nor when Yuri trips the injured guy, perhaps the scene may have been unnecessary, but the way I see it is that Yuri sees that the guy is badly injured, and is running back in despite said injures which means he’ll most likely get himself killed if he goes in his current condition. So he trips him knowing that Estelle WILL jump in to heal him no questions which now gives him a much better chance if he still decides to go afterwards. As for him being a butt hole after Estelle heals him I think he was being tsundare (pardon my spelling if it’s incorrect) about basically telling them “Don’t worry about it” by helping them to come out of their high stressed tunnel vision for a moment to see how he might be able to help the situation. Don’t know if that’s what the developers were going for, but that’s my headcanon. 🤷🏿♂️

Great video and I really like your style. I played this game many times and never realize how underdeveloped the story was until you point out some holes. My only criticism is the constant change of music. I'm at work and listening to this, so when the music changes every 20 seconds, it get a little disorienting. I also imagine it's a pain trying to find the tracks and cutting them down is time consuming.
The main thing that took me off from the game is when Estelle gets kidnapped, and you'd THINK there'd be some urgency in that. But it took them approximately 3 days, a Random Karol Character development that could have been placed anywhere else, and 2 Inn stops to finally reach her. If you're going to add high stakes, don't reduce them IMMEDIATELY after.
The pacing of this game is soooo terrible. While playing I kept screenshots of the characters contradicting themselves in literally every other cutscene, some even back to back, especially anything focused around Estelle. The whole raven 'plot twist', death, and forgiveness all happened within the span of 4 cutscenes which can be played back to back if you don't take any side quests or detours and I was so pissed off by how that was handled I stopped playing for a year....

Too my knowledge Microsoft payed to keep Tales of Vesperia exclusive to Xbox 360, which made fans sad due to lack of the Pirate girl in the PS3 version.
I've long since stopped playing Tales games _for the story_ , considering every single time they just devolve into anime "kill god with the power of Friendship" slop and forget about any cool themes or ideas they came up with on the way there. I play them for the *gameplay* and the *characters* instead. I don't expect good *story* writing: I expect good *character* writing, which they weirdly manage to completely _nail_ every single time? Even Tales of Graces, which has _by far the worst story_ (even by Tales standards which are abysmally low), even THAT game manages to have an engaging cast of characters because of all the super fun character interaction they have along the way, facilitated even more by all the post-battle exchanges and the skit system, both things I wish more RPG series had. So for me it's really a mixture of super fun action gameplay, WITH CO-OP, something basically no other series out there bothers with, and super fun casts that add to the gameplay as you're controlling said casts on their adventure. I don't skip the stories or anything, I just don't expect anything good from them, and it saves me the disappointment of that part of the games at this point.
I think these games are written like a TV show where the characterization is fleshed out and the focus isn't on the story, the story is more like a backdrop for the characters to exist in
oh yeah speaking of the characters from tales of symphonia i couldnt play as lloyd since i kept dying with him in melee range so i always played sheena or colette
I always thought Vesperia was a enhanced version of Symphonia, both in gameplay and side content. I feel this two games are very similar but Vesperia has a more deep gameplay and way more side content.
@@WesDoesGames After watching your video two times this week, i must admit... the story sound pretty dumb after you highlight the absurdity of some situations 😂 I don't realized it when i played the game back in 2009 and even after spending 200 hours on the Definitive Edition. I guess the gameplay and the side content make up for it. Also, i don't know if you have done the majority of the side content but, this game is litteraly filled to the brim with obscure and easy-to-miss sidequests, on top of being completely unavailable after passing a certain point in the story (bonus point for the Brionac quest 🥲). Some quests are nearly impossible to find and complete without a guide.

cool video. Quite nicely pointed out all the problems i have with the " story". Story is not Tales forte and this one is specially erratic and "episodic" feeling. Lost some points when you said you like Yuri.
I bought this game on the Switch because I’d heard it was really good. I got 10 hours into it and got frustrated because the story still hadn’t really ‘started’, the game’s difficulty spiked and the combat system apparently requires you to use an awkward exploit to get around the game’s really bad combo system. It’s one of the few games I just hard dropped because I didn’t want to deal with the bullshit.
Vesperia is probably my least fav game in the series(that i have played) i find the combat kinda clunky and janky, if that makes sense, and the dungeons seem padded, with too much empty space. Also, moving in the overworld is bad, until you get that item that increases your speed everywhere
I didnt expect anyone to actually reply, tbh. But speaking of those jrps, it's been a while since I last played on the ps5. So it's been awhile since I last played vesperia(again), Zestrilia and symphonia remastered(which I got from the streaming service) Same with Arise, and I actually own a physical copy on xbox. I just been focused on other games at the moment(primarily Sonic) Also, I have only beat Arise and Vesperia, in 2023 and 2021.
@@Tuffalixar I don't know, since I never played the full game of Berseria, but tbh, I would want to form my own opinion, likely after playing it 👍. So I have no opinions. Besides, that is what I usually do. My opinion(s) wouldn't had been genuine otherwise. I hope what I said makes sense.
"Karol dresses up" Yup this is what the script in this scene says. I get it A good punch at the vatican is always the right choice Also screw the side quests in this game. So many time gated things that essentially playing with a guide is recommended

I'm 16 now and I was born in 2007 I am glad to have found out about the tales of series and I want to explore more but I'd have to buy new consoles, I will try to get old gen consoles so that I can get more tales of games and play co-op
So as a fan of both symphonia and vesperia you're giving symphonia too much credit for the tales series usually the first portion of the game is an excuse to explore the world by the end of the journey of regeneration you've done almost nothing but learn of the existence of another world destroyed a town and learned the church and many of it's beliefs may be a sham. Yuri meanwhile isn't just going after a water filter the aqua blastia literally makes water for the lower quarter which aside from the barrier is their only luxury hanks even says they'll get the runs if they get water from the river so you're still accomplishing something unlike games like zesteria symphonia and even beseria to an extent where you kinda accomplish nothing
I hear what you're saying, but on a grand storytelling level, preventing people from getting the cha-chas just doesn't satisfy my epic journey itch, lol
man i really appreciated the gameplay but gosh the game itself was a paaaaaaaiiiiin so yeah i feel good hearing someone criticize the flaws of that game that i was sold to as the "perfect game" like man my expectations were too high because of how overrated it is and then it was the biggest dissapointment EVER. i still enjoyed some dinamics between certain characters but otherwise i felt like many character were straight up BORING (talking to you judith and raven)
the game took soo long to start and when you fight alexei i thought it was like... the middle on the game only ! turns out we were near the end ! pff...
This video is the weirdest mix of level headed critqiue and the most bizarre, pointless, almost made-up sounding complaints. Im equally shocked thst people say this is the best tales game as i am with how insane someone of your opinions are. *karol is one of the worst characters ever. His design alone completely ruins this game.
tales of Vesperia story is mid i like the first third with the Justice contrast kinda like a superman and batman thing going on, 2nd third kinda mid, and the last third kinda dragged and boring but it makes up for interesting characters...the story is better for those who looks for dialogue and hidden stuff. but honestly i rather Tales of Vesperia story then Tales of Zesteria, Berseria, Arise...Zesteria is interesting but the way they present is bland and makes the story boring characters are fine, berseria i just cant stand Velvets arc for lack of better word "Sasuke complex" is kinda irritating from no emotion to constantly angry all the time, Arise well is pretty to look at and it kempt my attention but thats it, nothings really interesting for me to learn more. So i cant agree with Vesperia being the worst story ever, i have seen alot worse. tho i prefer Tales of Symphonia but i think Tales of Vesperia is the most definitive Tales game i ever played
Thanks for your honesty. I put 20 hours into this game and quit because I just couldn't get into it. And I've spent YEARS confused about how people think this is a great Tales game lol. So thanks for the perspective
Coming from someone who also hated it back when I first played it, i'd say to give it some time. You'll hear that Vesperia gets a lot better in New Game+ (namely since you don't spend half the game without half the things that make the combat feel better) and while I certainly can't disagree with that statement, I also think that once you adjust to what the game expects of you, it can be a fun time. While I still wouldn't call it one of my favorites, it definitely feels like one of those RPGs that you need to let settle before it starts to make sense.
Yuri was not a dude for the people he told Estelle to let an injured man die told her it was dumb to heal him. He was injured by monsters trying to fight for the guild. He is a huge prick.
for me its symphonia that i like more, zestiria wasnt that good and i found myself hating the gameplay more than the story which usually i like the gameplay more than the story however graces f is my 3rd favorite

I think these games are written like a TV show where the characterization is fleshed out and the focus isn't on the story, the story is more like a backdrop for the characters to exist in
tales of vesperia has my second favorite story in the tales of series with tales of symphonia being my top favorite
oh yeah speaking of the characters from tales of symphonia i couldnt play as lloyd since i kept dying with him in melee range so i always played sheena or colette
I always thought Vesperia was a enhanced version of Symphonia, both in gameplay and side content. I feel this two games are very similar but Vesperia has a more deep gameplay and way more side content.
If not for the story Vesperia would definitely be the better game. The combat was awesome in particular
@@WesDoesGames After watching your video two times this week, i must admit... the story sound pretty dumb after you highlight the absurdity of some situations 😂
I don't realized it when i played the game back in 2009 and even after spending 200 hours on the Definitive Edition.
@@welkingunther8619 I'm flattered you'd watch it twice! Yeah I gotta say I wasn't able to find a ton of side quests naturally (I'm also very oblivious). Nice username BTW. I plan on making a Valkyria Chronicles vid in the future
@@WesDoesGames Haha thanks, well i'm a old french tactical RPG player so your videos speak to me a lot.
I like your point of view, it feels refreshing and helped me to gain some hindsight after playing those games for hundred of hours.
Looking forward for your Valkyria Chronicles video 😄
cool video. Quite nicely pointed out all the problems i have with the " story". Story is not Tales forte and this one is specially erratic and "episodic" feeling.
Lost some points when you said you like Yuri.
Lol why don't you like Yuri?
I bought this game on the Switch because I’d heard it was really good. I got 10 hours into it and got frustrated because the story still hadn’t really ‘started’, the game’s difficulty spiked and the combat system apparently requires you to use an awkward exploit to get around the game’s really bad combo system.
It’s one of the few games I just hard dropped because I didn’t want to deal with the bullshit.
I also couldn’t stand the pirate child. She felt like such a non-sequitor every time she showed up.
The story wont get better but the combat. It just hard to get into the game at the start.
Difficulty surely spikes, but you definitely dont need exploits.
Vesperia is probably my least fav game in the series(that i have played) i find the combat kinda clunky and janky, if that makes sense, and the dungeons seem padded, with too much empty space. Also, moving in the overworld is bad, until you get that item that increases your speed everywhere
Berseria combat is more boring, trust
I didnt expect anyone to actually reply, tbh.
But speaking of those jrps, it's been a while since I last played on the ps5. So it's been awhile since I last played vesperia(again), Zestrilia and symphonia remastered(which I got from the streaming service)
Same with Arise, and I actually own a physical copy on xbox. I just been focused on other games at the moment(primarily Sonic)
Also, I have only beat Arise and Vesperia, in 2023 and 2021.
"Karol dresses up"
Yup this is what the script in this scene says.
I get it
A good punch at the vatican is always the right choice
Also screw the side quests in this game.
So many time gated things that essentially playing with a guide is recommended
the dek wapon who destroy barrier is stteal from xillia with the lance of kresinic and the schusim
This game came out way before xillia
Man.. the UA-cam algorithm is honestly the worst. I literally searched "Tales of retrospective" a few days ago and of course this video was completely absent despite my obsessive scrolling... I only found it by checking out your channel after your Engage video. Awesome video, fuck UA-cam.
Thanks for taking the time to search it out. Yeah, ever since UA-cam switched from "show the results of what you search for" to "show you results we think you want to see" it's been hard to rank properly
@@WesDoesGames *takes deep breath* I know.. I've filed bug reports over it 😂 "what we think you want" is for feeds, search should be search.
Strange. I searched the same line and it was second.
I like Vesperia, but I wish I loved it. It's a 7.5/10 game with the potential to be at-least a 9
That's a good way of putting it
I hate how right you are but gosh darn it, do I love this game!
To each his own I guess since I disagree with absolutely all your negative points, this game is a Gem 💎
Fair enough, I'm glad you got enjoyment out of it. I definitely loved the battle system and art style. I wish we got more of that in later Tales games
11 years just to play one game is so silly (my mom bought me tales of vesperia for the 360 when i had a 360 in like 2015-2017
I'm 16 now and I was born in 2007 I am glad to have found out about the tales of series and I want to explore more but I'd have to buy new consoles, I will try to get old gen consoles so that I can get more tales of games and play co-op
Symphonia is worth a buy and if you can get Abyss that's good too
@@WesDoesGamesyes
Repede is the poor man's Noishe
Honestly it sounds like you weren’t paying attention during the story
😅
57:00 boy ur funny and good and have a great sense of music shame ur not big
My favorite Tales game. Yuri is my favorite Protagonist. Oh no no no Repede is the best Dog in gaming history!.
I hear what you're saying, but on a grand storytelling level, preventing people from getting the cha-chas just doesn't satisfy my epic journey itch, lol
man i really appreciated the gameplay but gosh the game itself was a paaaaaaaiiiiin so yeah i feel good hearing someone criticize the flaws of that game that i was sold to as the "perfect game" like man my expectations were too high because of how overrated it is and then it was the biggest dissapointment EVER.
i still enjoyed some dinamics between certain characters but otherwise i felt like many character were straight up BORING (talking to you judith and raven)
the game took soo long to start and when you fight alexei i thought it was like... the middle on the game only ! turns out we were near the end ! pff...
He does have great hair.
Ha i had never gotten through the whole video and forgotten i asked to be roasted. You got me good Cheers
"I don't want American garbage, I want Japanese garbage" 😂😂😂
This video is the weirdest mix of level headed critqiue and the most bizarre, pointless, almost made-up sounding complaints. Im equally shocked thst people say this is the best tales game as i am with how insane someone of your opinions are. *karol is one of the worst characters ever. His design alone completely ruins this game.
Lol. Which of my critiques did you disagree with?
tales of Vesperia story is mid i like the first third with the Justice contrast kinda like a superman and batman thing going on, 2nd third kinda mid, and the last third kinda dragged and boring but it makes up for interesting characters...the story is better for those who looks for dialogue and hidden stuff. but honestly i rather Tales of Vesperia story then Tales of Zesteria, Berseria, Arise...Zesteria is interesting but the way they present is bland and makes the story boring characters are fine, berseria i just cant stand Velvets arc for lack of better word "Sasuke complex" is kinda irritating from no emotion to constantly angry all the time, Arise well is pretty to look at and it kempt my attention but thats it, nothings really interesting for me to learn more. So i cant agree with Vesperia being the worst story ever, i have seen alot worse. tho i prefer Tales of Symphonia but i think Tales of Vesperia is the most definitive Tales game i ever played
Well that's a bummer to hear because those were the next three Tales games I planned on playing lol
@@WesDoesGames its just the story, for what they are it's not bad
Though I like the general narrative and structure of the video, I didn't like very much of your humor, they were super hit or miss.
This man needs more subs
Hear hear
I miss aim
We all do
Worst rpg ever? It’s not even the worst tales of game lol. That dubious honor goes to tales of legendia hands down
I definitely don't think it's the worst rpg ever
Legendia isn't even close to being the worst when games like Destiny PSX, Tempest, Innocence DS, Symphonia 2 and Zestiria exists
Thanks for your honesty. I put 20 hours into this game and quit because I just couldn't get into it. And I've spent YEARS confused about how people think this is a great Tales game lol.
So thanks for the perspective
Gameplay wise it's great. The art style is beautiful... It has a lot of things going for it. It just has no story or plot
Avocados?
Yuri was not a dude for the people he told Estelle to let an injured man die told her it was dumb to heal him. He was injured by monsters trying to fight for the guild. He is a huge prick.
Yuri is one of the worst protagonists ever made.
Stop talking mess about zestiria it's the best tales.
for me its symphonia that i like more, zestiria wasnt that good and i found myself hating the gameplay more than the story which usually i like the gameplay more than the story however graces f is my 3rd favorite
