  • What is the best way to grow an avocado seed? What's the best way to start an avocado seed growing? This video has been a few months in the making because we're testing whether it's better to grow avocado seeds in soil or in water! In December of 2018 I gathered a handful of avocado seeds and placed them in water to see which was the best growing medium - from this experiment I had some conclusive results!

It looks like the seeds you have in the water were covered in algae, though it was difficult to see since we only got brief glimpses with little light. Did you change the water for them regularly? Based on my research, the water is supposed to be maintained and changed about once a week or as needed to keep it clean.

Would be worth the experiment to compare both in soil but one with the cling wrap advantage. Happy Avogrowing!

I wonder if this is why she mentioned cup vs jar? I know mine do better in a cup... OR in a “covered” jar. Simply because the sun can’t turn the water into algae as quickly. I’m now using black thick plastic cups and the water is staying much cleaner, I’m noticing. I still change it out but don’t have to as much due to no algae growing.

The best way to germinate an avocado seed is to wrap in paper towels wet the paper towel after wrapping it and pop it into a zip loc bag then place into your cupboard and close the door. Check on it after a few weeks. It should have germinated then plant in soil.if it hasn't germinated leave in cupboard for a few more weeks. Before wrapping it in paper towels make sure you take off the membrane/paper like coating on the seed and give it a good rinse.I have grown an avocado tree 4 feet high since April. It is now December of the same year. I have 12 avocado trees growing by this very method.

I think it is maybe because of the dirty water and types of avocados? Here is my experience:
I bought two different types of avocados from different stores and suppliers, peeled the brown thing and put them into the water in the same day. It has been exactly 4 months and the first one is really big with lots of leafs and it is growing super fast. It actually has 3 stems growing out of the seed. It surprised me, because I have always seen that there is just one stem. So - the other one is tiny, slow-growing with just one stem and tiny leafs. And maybe it really depends on the type of the avocado, if you are changing the water and keep them clean and when/where you are growing them? Because I started in October 22nd and i have them indoors, where is less sunshine? I can send you pictures if you want to.
It is just an idea. :) Anyway big thumb up for your channel, really inspiring and helpful.

Starting the pit in soil gives faster results with a good success rate. My source: the University of Nebraska website. 6 out of 7 avocados that I started in soil sprouted in about 7 - 10 days and took off with a much higher speed of growth compared to 6 that I had started with the toothpick and water method, which hadn't even cracked yet. By the time a couple of the toothpick avocados cracked, my avocados that were started in soil were about 3 - 3 1/2 inches tall. I ended up planting all of the toothpick method avocados in soil because they were taking too long. About 7 - 10 days later they were all sprouting. A couple died and a few that were doing great were taken by squirrels. I gave some away and kept 5 of them.
Also, a little random advice: I grew them in party cups. They are so cheap and have a great depth for the roots. Just cut about 6 - 8 holes on the bottom outer edges for drainage and when the roots start to grow through the holes, transplant the baby trees to a bigger pot, only burying the still-attached pit halfway. If there are new sets of leaves growing, clip any dying/browning older leaves to free the plant of the burden of maintaining them so it can focus its energy on it's new baby leaves. I didn't have a big enough collection of avocados to truly verify whether this was a coincidence (I don't think it was), but when I cleaned the dying leaves off of 2 out of my 5 avocado trees, the new growing leaves grew in a little faster compared to the 3 plants that I left alone. I read that avocados are nitrogen fiends (it's their favorite) so use either nitrogen-rich fertilizer, special fertilizer specifically for avocados, or even a few select citrus fertilizers (that's what I'm currently using. I don't remember the brand, I just know it's called "Citrus Tone" and it says it can be used for mangoes and avocados as well) every 3 - 6 months. Make sure they have tons of sunlight and after a few years it will have it's beautiful greenish-purplish leaves. On a final note: the trees seem to grow faster the bigger they get (that's what I'm noticing). If you are keeping an avocado tree as an indoor plant, they get pretty big (that's why I gave 3 more away and currently have 2: they take up even more space than my citrus trees) so prune them down a bit maybe once or twice a year. I hope this helps!

    • @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree
      @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree  4 роки тому

Hey Chris, thanks for your question.
With my seeds raised in water, I let them grow to about 20cm tall, then I'll prune them back to 10cm and let them grow back to 20cm before I plant them in soil ( See this planting video for information ua-cam.com/video/7zSIHjcw9ZA/v-deo.html )
Fruiting is another issue. If you're wanting fruit from your tree, you're likely going to be waiting 7-10 years for it to mature, and you'll need multiple trees of complimentary varieties. Avocados rarely self pollinate and essentially change the genders of the flowers, to get a good crop you need trees where the male organs are available on one tree and the female organs on another. It's challenging to tell what variety your home-grown trees are.
To speed up the process and to guarantee the variety of avocado - grafting is essential. I am hoping to begin playing around with this myself within the next year.

I'm pretty sure the reason the ones in the water didn't sprout is that you never changed the water in the containers. The ones you pulled out were covered in algae which is probably what stopped the seed from growing. It would be interesting to see you redo this method by changing out the water weekly and seeing whether that speeds up the process. I've also heard peeling the outer layer off of the avocado seed speeds up germination. I'm currently running my own experiment at home to see if the peeling method makes a difference when grown in water vs not peeling the seed and just growing it in water.

Hey Melony - I don't think I changed the water frequently enough. It's true I did get some trees from the water seeds, but I think I need to change the water more frequently.

I think you're probably right. I've had success with seeds with the skin on and with the skin off. I think I may need to conduct more experiments!

Well that's a lie cause I tryed it with just water and tooth pick and it works you must not be changing water every other day. May not as fast as soil but it dose work .

Thanks for the comment! I wasn’t trying to say that the water and toothpick method doesn’t work, I was trying to find out if planting them straight into soil was faster - which is what the results of this experiment showed.
But I will admit that I didn’t change the water very often... there may be another investigation to be conducted here!

Hydroponics is proven to be better than soil.

There are certainly benefits to a hydroponic system. However - this isn’t hydroponics (it’s missing the nutrients and pumps). I wouldn’t be comfortable growing avocados hydroponically long term either, while it’s great for smaller plants and annuals, it’s not great for larger trees. Whilst it’s possible to do it, mature trees struggle under hydroponic conditions.
