I love Old Hollywood & murder mysteries/crime stories connected to it and this is one of my favourites to read about! I was hoping you'd cover one day.
Studying this case is one of my hobbies! I’ve read the entire Taylorology series and numerous books on both the murder and its various characters (especially the very talented and underrated Mabel Normand). This is a very respectable summary! It’s a complex case, and there’s a lot of rumor and misinformation out there about it (starting with the very newspapers that reported on the murder in the 1920s), so it’s all too easy for discussions of the case to go off the rails.
This week marks the 100th Anniversary! RIP 🙏 William! I hope one day is solved! This is the best vlog I've seen about Taylor and The cast of characters.
40:49 Double take😂. I like seeing some of the editing blips make it to the final cut because it is the only thing that confirms to me that Georgia is human and not a literal god. I say this because virtually everything else about her videos is perfect.
I would love to see a true crime UA-camr cover the 1950s Nebraska spree killers Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate. Starkweather was 19 when he killed his 14 year old girlfriend Caril’s whole family, stuffing her mom’s body and baby sister’s body in the outhouse. They went on to live in the house for days before going on the run and killing a further eight people. I’m from Nebraska and it’s weird how little coverage this case gets.
Ok that story about them wearing a white sheet and dressing up like a ghost to “scare the black man into confessing” was ridiculously hilarious OMG 😂😂😂. I’m glad he laughed at them….BTW I’m really curious if that stereotype about black people being afraid of ghosts is where that old racial slur came from? (The S word)? I never understood where that word even came from, but hearing that story made me wonder.
I have seen videos from the time showing black people afraid of ghosts (though I don't recall the white people welcoming them either) but I guess one editor believed that. Hilarious the guy (Al Weinshank) had a strong US accent when Taylor had been Anglo-Irish. Weird that he also died in the St. Valentine's Day massacre years later, and may have inadvertently caused it due to his resemblance to Bugs Moran.
So glad you covered this in your incredible way! You always do such a awesome job in every vlog you cover. I have studied this story for years, so many have options over the years it is hard to get true facts. Please do more old Hollowood Mysteries ans scandals.
Hello, that was a very nice presentation, thank you. There was a book written @2014 called "Tinseltown" by William J Mann. It covers a lot more than just the murder, but factually it is superior to all the other books on the subject. It's well written, entertaining, and reaches a conclusion on who did it that is unique. It is a most convincing argument. It's puzzling to me why more people who are fascinated by this case don't know about this book. I would highly recommend it, but as I said it covers a lot more than just the murder. Thanks again.
Idk but Charlotte Shelby seems a tad suss to me... and of course Paramount studios 😐 As for the "men would gather to smoke opium and do very gay things" comment, well I guess there's far worse things to do on a drizzly weekday evening! 😏
Aww thats rough. I got admitted for morning sickness with all my pregnancies. I wish i had advice but nothing i tried helped except being in hospital. Congrats on your pregnancy though, babies are wonderful!
I had sickness throughout my entire pregnancy and the doctor tried me on promethazine, Zofran and diclegis. Diclegis worked the best and it's basically a b vitamin and unisom. Ask your doctor about it. Hope it helps!
Overall a very well rounded take on the case, nicely presented and more accurate than many videos about the case. You're so right about how deep it goes - Taylorology can keep you reading for weeks! However, "no smoke without fire" is not correct in this case - the yellow press of the time, mainly Hearst papers, used to flat-out make things up. Citizen Kane was based on Hearst. The Marshall Neilan story has never been backed up by more than the hearsay of one writer, who has no recordings of Neilan saying it. Neilan's own career - and life - were seriously curtailed due to alcoholism, as was Margaret Shelby's. Also, many still-stated historical errors arise from the original edition of A Cast of Killers. There is nothing on record to indicate exactly what Peavey was doing in that park; the "soliciting young boys" rumours came later. He could have been having a pee, flashing, cruising, or just walking. At the time in LA, black people could be arrested for vagrancy just for being out after their "curfew". The rumour did and does go around that he was soliciting boys for Taylor, but it makes no sense as Peavey didn't live in and was heading home, and if you believe Taylor was gay/bi, he had had a male lover for 6 years but was likely in love with Mabel, along with being troubled by phone and premises stalkers and deeply into his work. Where would he find the time for young park hustlers, or send his very colourful and conspicuous valet to cruise for them? Also, Mabel's cocaine addiction - the press at the time hinted at 4 different drugs but legend went with cocaine - is highly debatable. Her family today retains records that her hospitalizations were the result of ongoing TB contracted in childhood that killed 2 of her brothers and would kill Mabel within 8 years. The family does state she went through a drinking phase, but hardly even smoked, a common habit at the time, due to her lung issues from TB. Many of those rumours came from the yellow press of the day and gossip columnists, but there is no medical record of Mabel being addicted to cocaine.
I love your channel! You provide such in depth information on all your subjects. Well researched. I'm often on the edge of my seat watching. I look forward to all your videos. Please keep them coming.
In addition to Bruce Long's outstanding writings and work, William Mann's "Tinseltown" is the essential read, and it thoroughly fleshes out the Margaret Gibson angle. I went to hear Bruce speak (and screen an MMM feature) around the time the Gibson connection was just gaining awareness.
I think the person who confessed did it, on the basis of Occam’s Razor-the simplest explanation is usually the best. The fascinating thing, to me, is imagining what had to come together to make her so far out of suspicion that she was never even connected with it publicly.
When I first heard about this case in the 90s the closeted gay element was more of a thing. It was PROBABLY Charlotte Shelby either directly or she paid someone.
Highly recommend the website Taylorology and the FB William Desmond Taylor group. It's truly labyrinthine but a fascinating case, like Agatha Christie but without a solution at the end.
Random theory: Maybe he *was* a secret drug-pusher and she found out, then told someone else just before he was killed. Then she confessed on her death-bed that she killed him because of the timing.
I like these type of videos more, where it's not so obvious you are reading a script off camera. At times it felt almost robotic, whereas in videos such as this one you make more gestures and facial expressions. It seems more natural. Keep up the good work, I've been a fan of yours from the beginnings of your channel 🤗
I've asked a few time before but oh well! Please Please Please can you do the case of the 'Princes's in the tower' I'm obsessed with it (I did a whole school project on it!😂) And think you would do such a good job at explaining it. It was Henry VIII's maternal uncles that went missing in the tower of London and were only 10 and 12. And one of the suspected 'murderers' is Richard III (the guy found in the carpark in 2012) although I think he was innocent and it was actually Henry VII mother that did it. Way to big of an explanation though but oh well!! 😂 Thanks from a fellow history geek 🤓
Richard was certainly not innocent. Means, motive and opportunity in spades, and he couldn’t produce his nephews when pressed and when it would have been politically advantageous to do so. Modern revisionists also insisted he wasn’t a hunchback, and then archaeologists found his skeleton and - lo and behold - confirmed that he did indeed have a spinal deformity. I wouldn’t take the revisionists too seriously.
If it wasn't for a large monument for the real Mary Miles Minter in the Mansfield City Cemetery in Louisiana I would not know of the forgotten actress, her niece, who stole her name.
Open to debate. Some think the killer was crouching or Taylor leaning over when shot. The person seen leaving was 5'9'-5'10"; Margaret, Mary, and Charlotte were all 5'2" or under. I do wonder, though, if the killer and the person seen leaving were the same.
@@booksnuggler2494 that certainly is something to consider . I find this case so intriguing but like everything you can only work with the information you have 🤔
Actually it's thought that MMM's mother was having an affair with Taylor, they were rather close. Also, a .38 isn't a rare caliber. It's been around since 1898. It's a rather large caliber weapon for a woman to carry in her pocket or handbag. I guess it could have been derringer style or she carried a large bag. It certainly would pull a woman's pocket out of shape though.
My take, definitely not Sands. Not Mary. No way it was Mable. I do believe that the studios came in and took And planted things to their advantage. Might be Margret the mother. It might be a lover, we don’t know. The key, nothing of substance was taken. It was a emotion kill. Planed, but emotional.
jess curious does anybody in the uk, ireland or australia have the lightest idea or care that they pronounce the name 'LOS ANGELES" incorrectly? ok in all fiarness it's a spanish name so technically any way of pronouncing it as an english speaker would is incorrect however i'm curious if they're even aware they're saying it wrong at all?
i’m sure they’re more than aware; but given their dialect, it’s probably harder to pronounce it the way that americans would. but in general, i’d say even us americans are pronouncing it wrong, so i don’t hold it against them 🤷🏽♀️
I’ve always found this to be fascinating, it’s frustrating now that we will never really know for sure. Confessions aren’t always truth and so this is never likely to be solved. Imagine the studio cleaning up the scene before the police arrived.
I haven't watched the video yet but have been studying the case for years. The studio did not clean up before the police arrived- there have been many incorrect tales of ppl burning papers in a fireplace (he didn't have one), Mabel being there at the crime scene (she was brought there by police during her statement but not on the day), and tons of people being there before the police. The website Taylorology has a section of official documents, and the statements of witnesses are that only Peavey and a couple of neighbours were there when the first cops arrived. While true the studio removed some papers, it was while the police were present and did not yet know it was a homicide due to the mysterious doctor stating it was a stomach thing; the police were ok with the studio protecting Taylor's privacy from the press, but when the bullet hole was discovered, the police insisted the papers be given back. Whether the studio gave them ALL back is another matter.
“Men would gather, smoke opium and do very gay things” that sounds like an AWESOME agenda 😍!!!
Glad someone else picked that up!
P
Yes, it does!

That "ghost" bit 🤣👻
literally had to film it three times to keep a straight face
It’s the fact that they thought that would work for me 💀💀😂😂
Georgia Marie
Well the man himself laughed at their idiocy I don't think anyone would blame you for laughing as well.
One of my FAVOURITE old mysteries! Thank you so much for making this! ✨

Ooo yes! I have wanted Georgia to cover this old Hollywood mystery for a long time! My day is made!
I’m sick af and this video is really helping to keep me on not focusing on how bad I feel

not quite perfect.

Brittney Vaughn just made a video on this yesterday!
Your history series is literally the best thing on UA-cam have watched every single one

oh no!! hopefully this distraction works!

Congrats! I'm sitting here feeding a babe right now as your prego with one. I hope you're feeling a bit better :)
Love these historic murder cases! They're so fascinating and feel less dark/scary than recent true crime. ☺
Both my ears loved this video! 🤣 Love your content and the sound is great in this one!
hahahaha I am the worst UA-camr 🤣 🤣
@@georgiamarie_ Nooo, you are my favorite! Your content is amazing!
Your cases are always so interesting! I love listening to them when I’m doing my makeup :)
I'm from Carlow, was not expecting a case about a person from my own town
Wonderful coverage of this case! Thank you so much for the credit ♡
YESSSSSSS!!! This is one of my favorite Old Hollywood mysteries! I'm so glad you made a video about it❤❤❤❤❤
Georgia can you please do a video on Henry VIII as well as his children
I'll add it to the list!
There is one on his wife's which is really good and gives a lot of info on him and his children
Or Catherine de medici
You do a great job with these stories. I appreciate all the work you put into this
Look it's Marie from Aristocats!!!
Omg Williams Dsemond Taylor. This story is definitely an old Hollywood true crime story
Thank you Georgia 🙌🏾😊
Knew Henry would burst out laughing at the fake ghost.
There is so much to know how the studios and LAPD worked either together or against each other at this time. You coved that so well, as always!
Always shares interesting stories . ❤️
Love your coverage of Irish cases even it is Irish/ American case. Could you look at he Philip Cairns case?

Read a few good books on this case. I am a fan of old Hollywood and silent films.
Mabel reminds me a bit of Sigourney Weaver. It may be the eyes, not really sure.
Se iba hacer una película sobre el pero creo que no se llegó a Realizar 😑😑😑
You forgot to mention that the angle of the bullet came from someone small and who would have been embracing William

"Fatty" Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle was quality. Obviously.
No evidence that Mable used drugs. Those close to her never knew her to use any.
Just commenting for the algorithm ❤️🧡
Plenty of legitimate reasons why a 19th century British Army Officer would not want his son to be an actor.
