A few weeks ago, I told someone how we used to do this. But I never had the purpose built tool. A regular hole punch and scissors worked just fine.

Yes, I love the KISS (keep it simple s....) philosophy. Totally agree and I did the same... until I think I got my first disk notcher at a user group meeting. I probably thought I was such a hacker to do such a thing, haha. Thanks for the comment! I appreciate it.

The downside of reversing a disk, crud that accumulates in the liner edge at one side of the read opening can be swept out and cross the head next time.
Also, you can only reverse in systems that do not use the index hole.
BBC Micro Elite has a double indexed reversible disk, 40T on one side and 80T on the other, so it was not intended to be repeatedly flipped

Excellent points! I know I completely disregarded that risk as a kid so instead I made a backup of a backup of a backup 🤣. Thank you for sharing this insight and the limitations on other systems.

@@VintageGamingMemories I remember being given the warning about it by the computer studies teacher. Apple ][, yes I'm that old. Apple was wierd with the disk drive, didn't really use the drive sensors at all, didn't use the index hole (which others used for soft sector - single index, or hard sector - disk with sector count index holes). Also, didn't use the track 0 sensor, just sent 255 step outs to zero it - why they make such a noise - also requiring a drive mechanism that won't jam or misalign from over seeking (lead screw drives can jam if over seeked)

I didn’t have a notcher, I just cut the notch manually.

Nice! Old schoolin' it. I tried that back then but never was really good. I seem to often cut it too deep even when I lined it up with a floppy on top of it.

I had a nibbler, it took three punches to make the notch.
I have Elephant Memory stickers on everything

I should have shown the floppies I have from various purchases which has interesting hole punches on them. Definitely can tell some were scissor cuts and others were hole punched a number of times 😁. In the early years without a hard drive, I remember cherishing and protecting these floppies because of the games we had on them. What we valued back as kids, lol. Thank you for sharing your memories.
