I've got a Damascus Double Barrel Manton Shotgun, it's a Beauty. The barrel has a darker brown patina from time, but you can still see the damascus. I LOVE IT!

Jonny, thanks for a great look into the history of Joseph Manton. Firearm history is always interesting to learn about. Btw.... The new haircut is looking good ;)

Thanks Johnny for another great history lesson. Glad I took a break ;) from work to watch it. I see now the distinction in the story of the Clergyman. It was the "flash in the pan" that I missed. Hope you and the crew at TGS are having a great day.

Jo Manton a great man of the gun trade, he is said to be the first gun make to fit huts to the barrels allowing the barrels to be take off for clean with out a turn screw. He was the first to put two barrels together with a rib and may have help invent choke but did not know it at the time, he use to back bore barrels. The first half to the muzzle was 14 bore and the back half to the breach was 12 bore, he did it so as the barrel fowled up in use you could shoot more shots.

Cheers for the break from university work, love the videos, incredible information, reminds me of modern industry like plane engineers who make something for big companies then have their product patented by the company making a pittance from the profits

Excellent, excellent video. Hope to see more of this stuff in the future. Love your channel, but please, please, slow down your speech! Lots of us have English as a second language and it's a bit challenging to follow you. Great channel anyway, it was time that somebody addressed the subject of the best shotguns that have ever been made, The English Best Gun. Kudos!

The same thing happened to Harrison with his marine watch made for the British navy, they refused to pay him and he struggled with his debts. Henry Royce, I.K Brunel, Manton etc etc, all brilliant, but hopeless when it came to money.

I think I own a Manton flintlock, I can't say for certain as it has some decoration but doesn't have a name or proof marks on it. I've been curious as to the person who made it, and through my book on the subject, and research online looking at what is on sale and everything else, every part of the gun suggests it is a Manton. That's what made me search on here and led me to this video. It's a high quality item and someone would have had to have been well off back in the day to own it, but what I am asking is did any other makers try and replicate the style or anything so I could try and work out if it was? If somebody could let me know that would be great. I'm certainly no expert as you might have realised, it's a very nice old flintlock but makers I'm not sure about.

I think you will find that Shaw and the copper cap was invited in 1816 the tube lock was 1818. The patten for the copper cap was later after a court case with William Pape. Shaw won.

Me too, on my mother's side.... Also captain Kidd..... Government /King put Joseph manton in jail, then bankrupted him.... Also on my mother's side, Cpt. Kidd jailed then hanged drawn and quartered.. .. ((He was not a pirate, he worked for the crown))... I think, for all those, so many who were wronged by "so called" royalty should be revenged....
