I work at a gm dealer and I can tell you that changing your own oil will not void your warranty, but there may be some disgruntled techs that might say it’s never been changed but 99% of guys (or gals) won’t do such thing. And GM does not recommend pre filling the filter, it can potentially allow contaminants in the new oil go through the main oil galleys.

Great video, thanks you for making it. I change my oil for all my cars. The only one I sent to the dealership was my 2020 BMW M8 for the first oil change at 1,200 miles . After getting home I parked the car in my garage. The next day I saw a small puddle of oil on the floor. I took the car back to the dealer and found out the tech just made a mess in the engine splash guard and never cleaned it up. Ever since I've decided the do every oil change myself. On the lighter side, some people ask me why I go through the trouble of changing my oil myself, my answer, "Its a man thing, you wouldn't understand it."

oiling the filter gasket is not to "come off easy", but to provide a consistent torque spec and installation. This varies , but usually once the filter gasket touched the mating surface, another 3/4 of a turn is needed to provide that torque spec

Ha! Almost. You do get one free oil change and “some participating dealerships” may pick up your car to do it, but after a few stripped and broken off bolts with the 4Runner I learned free oil changes aren’t exactly free. So I skip those these days

The reason it can void your warranty is because the new engines have tighter bearing clearances and changed from lead overlay to aluminum overlay, and this requires better filtration, That mixed with higher flow rates on the newer engines as well. most aftermarket filters are made the exact same way as previous lead overlay bearing engines, and this can cause engine noise or engine failure. Just get the ACdelco filter and you're good. you can read about it on this GM bulletin #07-06-01-016G.

Scheduling oil changes based on when your car tells you to do so isn’t always the best idea.

Do you trust the program in the ECU calculating the oil's service life? Does the ECU have such a program or is it just a set mileage interval? If there is such a program it should be taking into account operating conditions along with duration of operation. This of course makes the assumption that the oil in the sump is of a known type with an expected performance degradation rate. GM has for either environmental reasons or perhaps more likely penny pinching reasons chosen this oil change reminder as a way to reduce warranty claim costs. I don't disagree about it not always being the best idea. I think it is likely that for many folks the calculated interval is a sufficient indicator for an acceptable longevity of the engine. I suspect that for most new Escalade owners a DIY oil change is a non-starter. Very few people this vehicle is marketed towards are going to find value in changing their own oil more often than the manufacturer recommends so that maybe a few years after the vehicle has been sold to the 2nd owner a problem related to oil change interval is avoided.

You need to check your oil again, or you will void your warranty😂 it calls for 8 quarts for a reason not 7.5, you have to account for the oil filter which you did not so it being “full” with out you turning the car on is incorrect. After each oil change you start the vehicle let in run for like 5 seconds then give it a min to let everything settle your oil filter at this point will be full as it should from there check oil level again.

It’s still going strong. The only thing that’s gone wrong was the backup camera would intermittently work. Turned out to be a video control module that was replaced under warranty (and Sewell came and picked up the car to fix it, which was awesome). We had a good no hassle buying experience there. If Mickey is still there give him your business. I’m planning some more mods for it in the next few weeks so stay tuned!

@@ZeroToAwesome One other thing, I am going to get the Platinum Trim because of the nicer trim and features. I am undecided on the console cooler. @@thexoftexas4267the console is kind of small to begin with for how big of a vehicle it is. Its your car, but look at engine tear-downs that have run "extended OCI" as 'suggested' by oem. Repeatedly running much longer than 5k results in the piston rings getting gummed up. Then a engine that should be good to run for 200K+ miles will be dead in 100K or less.
Gummed up oil will build up under/behind the rings, resulting in oil consumption, cylinder wall scuffing/damage. If you are doing 10k+ OCI you will see sludge buildup around the cams, cars with VVT or cyl deactivation will see the very small passages clog up, ... is a new engine really worth saving a few oil changes?
