Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi has taken a stand against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla following a contentious incident during parliamentary proceedings. The confrontation arose when opposition MPs echoed the phrase 'Jai Samvidhan' (Hail the Constitution) in response to Thiruvananthapuram Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's oath-taking ceremony, where he concluded with the same phrase after swearing in as the 18th member of the Lok Sabha.
During the oath-taking, Tharoor, holding a copy of the Constitution, recited his oath in English, culminating in the invocation of 'Jai Samvidhan'. Subsequently, other opposition members joined in echoing the sentiment. However, Speaker Om Birla interjected, asserting that there was no necessity to utter 'Jai Samvidhan'. This led to a verbal exchange with Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda from Haryana, who contended that the Speaker's objection was unwarranted. In response, the Speaker curtly advised Hooda not to dictate what should or should not be opposed.
Priyanka Gandhi criticized the Speaker's stance, emphasizing the significance of upholding the Constitution within the parliamentary setting. She expressed concern over attempts to stifle opposition voices by objecting to the invocation of 'Jai Samvidhan', highlighting the fundamental role of the Constitution in safeguarding citizens' rights and democracy.
Congress leader Supriya Sreeneth also rebuked the Speaker's stance, questioning the reluctance to embrace the phrase 'Jai Samvidhan' in Parliament. Sreeneth underscored the irony of hindering constitutional expression within the legislative body, which is mandated to uphold constitutional values. The discord escalated as Sreeneth criticized the Speaker's conduct towards seasoned MP Deepender Singh Hooda, contrasting their respective electoral victories.
