I almost feel like this is Falcom making a definitive statement that Ys is never going to become a AAA style rpg. Only two characters does seem like a strange choice (at least at face value) but the developers are probably already working on the next game in the series ☺️ I think what’s most important about Ys games is that they keep coming and they provide fun adventures.

i feel like the early character interactions are weird. Adol meets a pirate group that exports and kills people, then just walks around them with zero apprehention. she threatens to cut off his hand and he has zero reason not to believe her. how is her and her group any better then the other villains?

    • @AlejandroRodriguez-cy8ee
      @AlejandroRodriguez-cy8ee 2 місяці тому +2

this is explained further in the story demo as to why Adol acted that way (the adventurer being part of it).
that and as pirates these guys are tamed. like at one point they say they are lawless barbarians but they are probably one of the most calm vikings i've ever seen with more rule and ethics than the port. I've only played the demo but the game seemed to make the player believe they were evil but like.......they kinda failed at that. Even Sir Carlan in Ys 8 is more antagonizing and more of a villain (despite not being one) than anyone at the Balta Seaforce.

It's a Falcom game, so story is to be expected. I wonder if previous games had less story (but still a lot of it) because Falcom simply did not had the resources at that time to pull that off. Ys has always been a bit in the shadow of the Trails series. Falcom even at one time combined Ys and Trails mechanics and story telling in one game called Tokyo Xanadu (a sequel is in the make by the way).
Personally I don't mind at all that Ys is going to get more story telling. It's the thing that pulled me into the Falcom games anyway..

By now on PS5, the scrolling is still broken on the reattempt infiltration menu. You can move the cursor by holding down the stick, but it moves erratically so down to luck if it selects what you want. However, that cutscene has corrected subtitles in English (I play Japanese voice with English subtitles).

i cannot speak for the story since i am not a YS full fan (i've only played lacrimosa of dana, 9 didn't interest me and 10 seemed fun to play in the demo). But in terms of gameplay it's been fun to experiment the combat and raising all the mastery of skills to unlock new ones. but some tips that i discovered while playing the demo:
    1) In order for you to do a perfect guard you need to time the block button, on paper this seems simple however there are 2 things to note:
the first one is that for some reason is the same button for using duo skills (and for putting your partner next to you) sometimes this is an issue since you might be blocking and suddenly you see karja pull out the duo attack combos.
The second is that blocking and perfect blocking work differently, blocking is holding the button but if you want to perfect guard, you need to see the special effects that hover around the character when pressing the block button (like using reflect on KH2) you have to time the attack of the enemy WITH that effect to get a perfect block; however the issue is that if you pressed the button more than once the effect won't appear, thus not making you do a perfect block.
HENCE the problem, the block button is also the same button to use duo skills, if you for some reason are using the duo skills and suddenly need to block, it might not work successfully as you might think. Thus making it so that you have to really time it (doesn't help that for bosses, perfect block won't stagger them so if a combo attack goes at you, it might be better to just run).
    2) I've played astral chain so the mechanics of combining normal attacks, switching characters and using duo skills is something that i naturally started experimenting on the more skills unlocked. Though it does feel a bit unsyngerize doing so, doesn't feel as natural as Astral Chain but it works (maybe a little too well).
    3) As i said, i've only played the demo. but has anyone noticed it's hard to build up fire over ice??? damn i'm lvl 28 on this demo and i still haven't proc the fire status.
    4) As for the mana string, it's nice but they don't tell you that depending on the enemy size/type, using it on them can either pull you towards them, or you both pull yourself to it and, weirdly enough, you also pull it to yourself.

I’m currently just playing through the demo but I completely agree about the dialogue. ENDLESS. The characters just never stop talking. Then the game suddenly throws you into a dungeon and honestly I kept dying. Not because I was finding the combat particularly difficult, but because I had zero opportunity to practice and really try it out, the game never lets you PLAY it. By the time I got to that first real boss fight, I was getting wrecked because I had no idea what was going on. I’m sure things get better after, but this demo is painful so far.

If you like trails series. Ys x seems a lot better. Narrative wise is interesting. I think lore exposition is fine. Especially if you are already invested into ys. Knowing the canonical time line. The explanations which also have references to the later time line ys game. It does feels good. Dropping the combat to 2 is a interesting take. But looking through the skills. Some of them are just elemental attacks of old games. Soooo is there really a innovation as kondo said. Not really fully. Duo skills are mostly the unique ones but haven't seen a lot of them. If anything the new rune system was the intriguing part of the game. Where you stat up and learn skills via leveling and unlocking the nodes. Also I don't recommend inferno mode on a first playthrough... It's tough ahahaha 😂. Other than that I think repetitive will be a thing in all of ys. In most of ys games. I usually try to ignore the slowest character unless they really have the merits. If not I can take a weakness deficiency and continue everything with adol. Since he does do well mostly.

It's probably understandable that nat every Ys-game can advance the time line, considering it's all supposed to come from Adol's diaries. After some point, Adol would have to be either immortal or have adventures multiple times *per day*.

It's a little after Ys I and II, but before Celceta. Not before 1 and 2.
A fair bit of the nautical stuff was, to me, not well done. I sail on tall ships as a hobby (yes IRL), but I understand that my quibbles as such are borne from that. I still enjoy the game of course, but you don't tell a helmsman to set a course and to look for somewhere to make landfall, that's the captain's or chief officer's job because the helmsman is busy steering to the course they're given; and you wouldn't have just one guy manning the cannons etc and so forth. I get it, they're stuck not knowing what to do in the beginning when it comes to escaping, but I don't think they thought through throwing a bunch of young people on a ship with no knowledge of how a tall ship actually functions. As said, they're quibbles of mine given my sailing experience, but at the very least, despite that I can move past those peeves and still enjoy the game for what it is.
I'm not sure, given your comments about there only being two playable characters in this, if you've given a lot of thought to the fact Ys I, II, III (The Oath in Felghana) and VI (The Ark of Napishtim) all only featured Adol as playable. It was entirely solo play with him. I enjoyed having a party in IV (Memories of Celceta), VIII (Lacrimosa of Dana) and IX (Monstrum Nox) - I haven't played Ys VII - and I think that was because it worked for the story. Just Adol and Karja works for Ys X, and the solo games worked too. Personally, if people don't like variations in whether or not there's a party, maybe they shouldn't get into the Ys games, because I think, if you're going to play one or two of them, you're probably going to want to become invested in the series, and as such you'll need to deal with Adol being solo for some of them. It's all part and parcel of Adol's adventures. Who can guarantee when you're going to come up a full group of people to join you in combat each and every time when you're travelling the world getting pulled into one difficult situation or another? It's part of that makes the series interesting and unique, to my mind.
Falcom generally do very well with making each Ys game different, while creating that mystery that's overarching the overall narrative. I admit Ys X is a bit slow (and to my mind sparse) with the story this time, and there hasn't been nearly enough in terms of ancient places to explore, what with the most recent history being only 100 years past, but I'm glad that later on it does touch on there being much more ancient stuff behind all that.
As for Mana Ride... I found it frustrating more often than not. I try to line up to jump on a rail or one of those mana wind surges, and it just veers off and we go plummeting and have to try again (and sometimes again and again) - though it's not nearly as frustrating as the dash jump in Ys IV: The Ark of Napishtim.

This seems fair to some degree, but I have to admit, YsX is still an upgrade from YsIX. IX had a lot of issues with its visuals being so dull and lifeless despite being in a city, and that made me feel so bored in the game. The story was amazing in IX but I do think the pacing had the same issue that X has by the looks of things. I dont mind a longer portion where characters explain things though... I've played games with deeper expositions. from a story department, it shouldnt be THAT much of an issue if you are a fan. as for the combat, I heavily disagree. yes it is a shame that there are only two characters to play, but that gives the devs more time to make to make combat a bit more dynamic in visuals and combos. I dunno... I just felt that those two cons felt a tad heavy handed... saying the game is a "downgrade" is an extreme

And i would even be fine with having only Adol playable and get more mechanical depth in combat in Exchange, i didnt really used the other characters much anyway, pretty much only when i was forced to because they were resisting adols attacks.

I love how each Ys game gives us a new experience. They make use of the story to change the battle system each time. I played seven,VIII,IX and the demo for X. I love all of them. 9 is my favourite concept and gameplay. It was so much fun switching between all the characters, and the story was very interesting. 10's gameplay is fun, and the story is okay. I like the brother/sister bond Adol and Karja have. I don't see any problem with these games. Each one of them gave me a really fun memorable experience.

  • @Rainos62

I beat the game twice. I think honestly i had the opposite opinion i think making it only 2 playable characters was better because in ys8 it was really noticable how awkward some characters played specifically hummel and ys 9 had a similar issue where certain characters felt way better to play as than others. I think having only 2 playable characters actually made them more fun to play and they made both character equally fun to play. also you can leave the last dungeon before completing it to complete whatever you might have missed because the final checkpoint is right before the final boss and they do allow you to fast travel out of the final dungeon.
Also i did not run into the issues you mentioned so it was probably patched out. I think my biggest problems with the game was the armored health bars i wish they made it easier to break them and that the ship upgrades didnt carry over into NG+ because ship combat going back to square one was kind of painful. The other problem is one of the final armors can only be gotten once you beaten the game because the character that gives you it leaves your party after a certain point and you cant complete the fish dex till you reach the final dungeon. overall i think it was a really fun experience. I actually really loved this story and side characters I think they did a really amazing job of world building.

I disagree on two points: first i think the atory is good enough. Not gonna win any prizes but im a story driven gamer, so having more story for me was a plus. Second i having just two characters is a great change. Ive alwaya felt like previous Ys games are way too broad, and not for the better. Ehat yiu call variety of gameplay i call tedious farming, since you had to pevel up the skills and stata of all other characters. And at the end of the day, it didnt even depend on which gameplay you liked better bit rather which character dealt better dmg to a specific boss or monster. I absolutely DETEST not being able to use the character i like for every boss fight if im nerfing myself against it. I hated this for ys 8, so im happy its changed now.

Just my 0.02, despite some flaws this is still one of my favorite games of this year (and there are like 10-12 good games or DLCs that came out). I might be the odd one out here - I enjoyed the 2 person team, Karja was my breaker and Adol for damage and kind of an evasion tank. Setting up different skills between each member was fun or smashing through the weaker enemies by spamming low cost skills is still entertaining. Yes, early game traversal is abysmal and by the time your ship is fully loaded you may only have 1-3 naval battles left so I do wish there was more. As for the story, I liked it, the last fight had a lot of charm without going into spoilers. I think the devs tried to make the story formula like the Trails series because there were a number of similarities that I noticed that weren't in the previous Ys games. Overall, I liked it outside of a few times the Mana String action was delayed or the camera wasn't at the right angle and fell to the lower levels of a dungeon. 8.5/10; would recommend

Being perfectly honest, Lacrimosa of Dana(Ys 8) was the best in the series and is still talked about today when people talk about some of the best JRPGs they've played. It's kinda hard to top just how good that game was.
Having said that, I do get what you mean. This game feels a bit bland in comparison to both 8 and 9(which were hands down my two favorites in the series).

This review is about what I expect for the new Ys game. I heard that Falcom is using a new game engine for this entry. That said, they are trying out a lot of new mechanics to see what the engine can do and what sticks with the players. The next game will see these mechanics refined and a better game will be the result (consider the difference between Memories and Monstrum)

  • @spicycurry2635

So many games that introduces boats ends up feeling tedious with their navigation system. Both Suikoden IV and Ys X have the same pacing issues caused by not being able to move fast enough to where you want to go while sailing your ship. It can be caused by random encounters, but also sailing speed. A lot of older games would have simply moved you from one point to another with a simple button click rather than sail manually. I think the Ocean being fairly large and empty similarly to a wasteland doesn't really help. Open world games were filled with random tasks/chests/items/puzzles to distract players and fill the void, but open world naval games feel empty in comparison. Old Final Fantasy games have really fast airship navigation where it never feels tedious to travel. In my opinion, modern Ys games really need to focus and work on their pacing.

However, I believe that the game lacks in graphics, which are not bad but some textures are too simple and especially in localization, the game has been translated into very few languages, if I'm not mistaken only 3. In a genre that focuses a lot on the story, this factor ends up weighing more and the absence ends up driving many people away.

hello, as an ys fan whos played lacramosa, nox, memories of celceta and origins, i have my fair share of issues with the game.
do not buy the switch version, from my experience with the switch version i can confidently say that the switch version suffers from slow down and performance issues that would normaly not be a problem but if your familliar with the other titles youll notice a significant downgrade in performance from previous titles.
the game feels like it was developed by a different team entirely, my biggest problem is that everything about the game is so slow, their also feels like their is input delay.
with regards to the game being slow, slower running speed, more and longer loading screens, the ship moves at a snails pace, the hoverboard does not keep momentum, also the energetic soundtrack that accompanies these games feels like its missing.
some game design features are also irritating, like how in alot of areas the game punishes you for missing a jump by landing you in mud where you will then have to walk slowly to get to shore to try the jump again, holding the use button to open chests and dig is also irritating as more often than not you will instead end up triggering your charge ability.
the story so far has been your standard Ys fair so no complaints on that part, but the gameplay is just so bad compared to other ys titles. If this is your first ys game, i highly recommend getting lacramosa of dana instead, no performance issues and a better representation of ys gameplay.

Combat from demo alone felt super clunky and sluggish. Mana bursts being the only way outside character swap to regen sp is awful especially since auto combos no longer matter at all. The duo mechanic being a gimmick and not the main gameplay style greatly disappointed me with how much they were hyping it up in trailers and interviews along with the other mana related stuff and the duo mechanic is incredible unfun and clunky with how you can't run or dodge blue attacks and oh i hate how dodging is only relegated to dodging a specific attack now to counter which makes the dodge button worthless. Mana seeds are such a great idea and arte chain system but i would love them in a better Ys game honestly. Feels like a massive step down from IX and even VIII. Fishing just being like VIII also sucks cause i felt YSVIII fishing wasn't that good to begin with also hearing the whole final chapter locking you in place sounds a lot like what they did with Kai. Character switching has lag now and everything feels far too committal. I don't understand how so many are loving this Ys game honestly. IX was super fun and improved the combat from 8 even bringing back boost an old Ys mechanic and then the parkour and monstrum abilities made movement really fun while X decides to put invisible walls everywhere like VIII again making exploring and moving so unfun when in IX you could run on buildings and jump on them, glide, run on walls and IX brought back dungeons to the series for X to remove them again.

The BIG problem i had with Ys X (japanese version), it's that the gameplay felt so slow... never seen an Ys game been this slow since the Ys games when you were just bumping on enemies, there's no flash guard nor flash moves (a staple for Ys games), the main gimmick of this game is about perfect blocking (which isn't that hard to execute, the window is pretty generous).
Still a good game but i was more satisfied with the Switch remaster of Oath in Felghana personally (again, japanese version) and some older titles like Ys VIII, Origin or even Ys IX for it's very fast paced gameplay alone (the story was meh though).

When will game devs learn ‘random island sailing does not a good game make’

I mean, that's the entire point of the franchise, every single game starts with the protag sailing on a random island

@@StewNWT I do think sailing from island to island is not a bad idea but when you see the same graphical theme for the third time. Its just something gaming is going to do. Gotta change something. Weather something.
