  • On March 23, 2018, one day before the student-led “March for Our Lives” rally in Washington, D.C, the NPSC convened a congressional briefing on school violence where experts discussed topics ranging from early prevention efforts to reforms in laws and policies surrounding guns. Additionally, Julie Pollack, step-mother of Meadow Pollack who was one of the 17 murdered at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, conveyed to us what that has meant to her as a Mother and as an Emergency Physician

      So true! My 13 year old daughter is terrified ever single day because she has the fear that something like this is going to happen to her and her peers at her school! And it very possibly could! There was a 15 yr old boy who was stabbed to death at our sons high school this school year! Apparently there were two boys fighting over a girl and the murderer brought a knife to school that day and provoked the victim into meeting him after school and when he wasn’t winning he fight like he had clearly contemplated e pulled the knife out and repeatedly stabbed the boy!!! His name is Shaquan (the innocent victim that lost his life that day!) Shaquan was a normal teenage boy who liked hanging out with his friends and loved his family! He played sports and everyone knew of him at school!
      He attempted going back into the school to get help after he was stabbed and the coward left him there to die…but he didn’t make it to help before collapsing and losing consciousness and later being pronounced dead at the hospital! Students and teachers who had still been on school property had seen him when he fell to the ground out front and that’s where they keep a memorial for him with candles flowers pictures stuffed animals etc.
      there’s some stupid threat every week at either one of my children’s schools…..shootings, fires, bombs, etc where police have to be called in to check the safety of all the students! No wonder my daughter is so scared to go to school and is always thinking of exit plans! No child should ever have to witness these things or feel the way she does

      The man next to her was a speaker, a Doctor who spoke on mental health. They want schools to have a licenced mental health professional available for students to talk to. Schools have Counselors but most of their discussions are helping students decide and achieve their academic goals. Nurses/Doctors are on site for medical issues, illnesses/injuries. They want MH professionals to be available as well. He was definitely moved by her story he could not hide his emotions.

      @user-jg7xp5xo7y Рік тому +6

      Not her husband, a Dr. I think who spoke on the need of Mental Health professionals being available in schools as a means of preventing this from happening again. She was the stepmother and I could see and feel her pain and impressed that she held her emotions so she could speak and explain in detail ideas to improve safety in our schools. The comments on here judging her lack emotions????? She wasn't there to show you tears. She was there to insist that there has to be some changes NOW, not after the next mass shooting, or the next mass shooting, NOW!! She was in that chair For You and Your Kids, For Me and My Kids. Did you listen to everything she has done, traveled, the many people, parents, politicians she has talked to? I saw a Mother who was Doing Something outside of her Norm. And why did she do that? She did it because she loved her (step) DAUGHTER that much and her pain from losing her was so unbearable that she had to Do Something ❤️ So I am asking you who say you would be unable to hold back tears if you lost your child. These shootings happen everywhere and it could be your school tomorrow. She lost her child and now fighting to save yours. If you are going to criticize her for that I would ask what are you doing to save your child??? Also remember this: When these changes start being implemented into your schools to save your child's life, it was the Mother you insulted that spoke out and stood up to help make that happen. I myself admire her and thank her for dedication and strength. My condolences to all the families of victims and survivors who will have to bare the toll it took in mind, body and soul and forever changing their lives❤️🙏 Praying for (Step)MOM to Stay strong in your Good Fight and that God Blesses every (Step) you take 🙏🙏

    You are brave, courageous and spot on. Reading this in 2022 causes me internal grief that school shootings continue and laws have not been changed despite individual, groups and political action in this direction. Your sorrow is my sorrow; however your grief is not mine. You have taken your love for your daughter and did all you could do to heighten awareness and have an integrated team approach where information would be shared on high risk individuals. Continue to believe that change will come and honor her memory in your daily life ; sometimes by being a listening ear to someone who is most egregious, offensive and off-putting. Teaching our children to be inclusive goes a long way in preventing tragedies such as this one. Slights, bullying and exclusion cause deep wounds as much as overt physical abuse. Peace and blessings to your family.

    I am sincerely hoping that our society as a whole begins to recognize that security in our schools means recognizing that mental health resources need to be expanded . The gun’s ability to kill is literally in the hands of a mentally Ill person. We have children killing children. Teachers should be encouraged to report behavioral problems in the class room . A fear of a teacher or school in reporting behavioral problems like bullying as an example, should not be discouraged because of fear of losing one’s job or the school being sued . Our priorities are misguided. Students need to be taught that their feelings of depression, hopelessness , etc. are critically important and that we need to hear them with open ears, eyes, and hearts. We need more trained mental health counselors in all schools. All children in schools need to feel secure and protected .

      Because America is literally OBSESSED with guns. This country was stolen using guns and built on gun violence. Statistics have showed over and over, that gun violence and murders committed with guns are significantly lower in other countries compared to the U.S. But this dumbass country worships money and violence, so I’d be surprised if we ever do anything about. If they didn’t do something about all of those beautiful little children getting slaughtered in The Sandy Hook shooting, then I know they’ll never really do shit about this. That’s why we are the laughingstock of the world when it comes to gun violence and control. And I get so tired of people who make the dumbass excuse that goes, “If you take away guns, you’ll still have people using other things like knives, etc. to murder others.” While yes, that may be true, and it’s impossible to stop all crime, the overall death toll in the U.S. due to gun violence would drop tremendously. At least this country should make it more difficult to legally own a gun, ESPECIALLY if you’re a person with significant mental health issues like this crazy fool has.

    Here in Europe no school is protected by police neither are teachers carying guns. Neither there are cameras in classrooms and neither do we have school shootings. More security wont stop anything and will create just a strange, tense learning experience. Maybe you should focus much more on what is wrong with your society. The main issue for school shooting is untreated mental illness in teenagers. Why ar so many kids going mad in the usa, why are hardcore war games allowed, which lead kids to engage with video games promoting violence every day and giving them the elusion to be a winner when commiting violence. Also Nikolas was engaging lots in these games, as any school shooter. Why is there no healp for kids like Nikolas, no treatment. Every school kicked him out, which is why he felt even more isulated. Kids with mental illness never get integrated, they are bullied all their lives. Nikolas suffered depression and autism. This is why he cant regulate emotions and anger. Everybody who has a autistic family member knows how difficult it is to tame down their anger fits and to break through their emotional isolation.
