The Ryobi website had numerous reviews on it for this mower. Many other people have had the same issues with battery degradation as I have, but all those reviews (both good and bad) have been removed. I purchased this mower in September of 2019. Initially the mower was great for my .75 acre yard. I was able to mow the yard and have about 50% battery remaining. I've always kept the mower parked in my 3 car garage, always plugged in when not in use. Starting around July of 2020 I started not being able to mow my yard on a single charge. I reached out to Ryobi and was told to clean under the deck. I did this and was again able to mow on a single charge, but just barely. Around Jan of 2021 it became increasingly difficult to mow my grass. It now takes 3 charges to get through my .75 acre yard. After filling out my last review, Ryobi reached out, asked when I had bought my mower, and then informed me that because it was more than a year old they could not help me, but they have ordered more batteries, they'd be arriving in August or September. But until then I'm out of luck. I believe that when I initially called and reported a problem, (which there is plenty of history of other users reporting) I should have been covered under the warranty. I believe Ryobi purposely tried to delay dealing with my issue until the mower was out of warranty. I cannot advise you strongly enough to avoid this mower. I now have a $4000 mower, that can't mow my yard, and can't get batteries for to fix. Its also very shady that my previous negative review along with everyone else’s reviews are now missing from the Ryobi website.
Interesting product. I do disagree with you on one point though, a "big commercial lawnmower" would not bog down in this grass at full speed. I frequently mow at speed with a SCAG grass that is much taller and equally as thick as this without noticing a change in performance.
Great info... I will be checking back for the up dates. Something you might be interested to know about your "Bamboo"... Twenty years ago my Aunt who loved Oriental gardens decided to turn her huge backyard into one at her home in a very posh neighborhood in Dallas,Texas. She started by planting Bamboo around the perimeter. All grew to be huge and spread prolifically, which was her plan... complemented with various water features, well manicured flower beds, stone walk paths and oriental style archways. She was an amazing gardener and a very kind woman but, failed to research her plan with more knowledgeable landscape professionals. Years later after her passing, I was tasked with preparing her property for sale on to find that although the Oriental garden was still beautiful, it had developed this one horrifying problem. It was over run with "Huge" RATS! When we called in a pest control company we were told that "Bamboo" will attract rats from miles around as it not only is their most preferred vegetation, they use the canes to sharpen their teeth! The landscape company we hired to remove all the Bamboo told us the same along with advising us that although they would remove as much as possible, the root system is so invasive, it would take years of continued effort to kill or control it! After digging the original plants up they treated those areas with full strength commercial weed kill for months and shoots still grew in masses! The rat infestation was eventually controlled but, too ward off multiple law suits, we had to pay for treatment for multiple surrounding properties! Do your own research, you will be glad you did before they become more fully established.
What is the towing capacity of the Ryobi ZT480e? I would like to know if I can tow a plug lawn aerator with about 140lbs of weight on it. That is in addition to the rider that is about 180lbs. If anyone knows the answer please respond.
I saw another guy do a vid on this mower. He said it probably had NiCad batteries. My guess is an upgraded lead-acid type. The fact they recommend constant charging is an indicator. With the cost of replacements, anyone with one of these should follow that direction religiously. Enjoyed your videos, thanks.
I just seen a video of this lawn mower earlier today from another guys video, and I was easily impressed with what it can do. The great thing about this mower is your ROI will start almost immediately. That mower requires 1.2kw to charge and here in New York for that amount of electric, it comes to be about 11 cents to charge it from dead to full. My old John Deere would burn about 2 gallons of gas doing about an acre and a half. So that’s about 5 dollars to mow my lawn each time. This mower is definitely on my wish list when I go shopping next time for a mower. Great job on the video and you definitely earned a follower because I want to see how this mower holds up through the next up coming months. Thanks for the review.
100 amp-hour battery, 48v nominal will at full charge of 56v to 60v be 5.6kwh to 6.0kwh, then add about 20% for loss during charging and it will take up to 7.2kwh to charge from empty to full. In reality you should never run to empty, but even a half-charge will be 3kwh to 4kwh. Still a lot cheaper than gas, plus no tune up, oil change, belt drive replacement... If it holds up. I'm a bit worried about the batteries. $1000 for battery replacement every 5 years (how long will they last?) would provide a lot of gas + maint.
Would different wheels help with slipping on hills? What’s the weight? On a hill, did you mean it might flip going verticals up and down or horizontal across?
i used to feel like it might tip back but it hasn’t ever really happened. 600lbs approx. i wouldn’t change the wheels so far works fine. so far battery life is good for me but just can NOT use an extension cord. must plug directly into the wall
Island Man home depot needs $150 each. There are 4 batteries. If this mower becomes popular enough i bet someone on ebay or amazon will get rich selling a cheaper option. I have been cleaning the top of the deck with a blower. The mower is very easy to lift up in the front and without the tow hitch you stand it up with the seat back against the ground. Even though ryobi says not to use water i think if you use common sense and some care it is possible to use a little water without damage. Like cleaning a car engine, just dont spray certain things directly and you wont damage the electrics.
I been using a Ego push mower last few years, just bought a house with a much bigger lawn 1.3 acres, i think im go with this, electric is just much easier than gas mowers i think
I have had a mulching attachment on my mower from day one. Greatly reduces grass clippings piling up. Of course so would more frequent cutting but every five days is good enough. I am amazed at how well it cuts. My neighbor just got one of those. My 14 year old Hustler is in great shape. I just now, 14 years later had to replace the deck blade spindles on the deck. I have replaced the drive spindle after about 10 years. I am a home owner not a lawn service. Only use is from say April to October where I am.
Well Done. I will be checking back for updates. Seriously considering this mower as an option. I have a lot of good luck with Ryobi products (as you can see in my videos, Ha)Thanks for sharing. I hit that red button for future episodes about this mower. Have a GREAT day.
I didn't get out the stop watch but the blades on my JD X500/48" deck stop just as quick as the Ryobi electric blades. Which makes sense since with the belt, spindles and idlers there is a lot of drag present. For anyone thinking of buying the Ryobi, I recommend cutting the wires to that annoying beeper immediately before you see a group of angry neighbors coming down the street towards you carrying torches and hot tar. :-)
@@massproductions4485 You are probably correct. Although, one advantage of the electric mower is it is typically quieter than an equivalent gas powered mower. But the neighborhood silence is shattered by that shrill back-up alarm beeper which can probably be heard farther away than the noise of a gas engine. Can you imagine a neighborhood full of these mowers? Perhaps a person could put some tape over the alarm to muffle it a bit such that only the operator can hear it. Someone once commented that all cars should come with backup alarm beepers. I then asked them, can you imagine what a mall parking lot would sound like... you wouldn't know which direction the sound was coming from. :-)
Bill K It takes me about 45-60 min but i have so many trees and things i have to maneuver around, rough terrain, fence, and my hill so i go kinda slow half the time. Once i get the hang of this thing im pretty sure i can do it in 30-45min. The manufacturer says 2.2 acres for this model. The model with the larger battery is supposed to do 3 acres according to ryobi.
Weed whack around the house, pool and trees before you get on the mower and it will speed up the process and also give you a better end result in those areas.
Nice video, well done. Just purchased the 75ah version for a 1 Acre property. Have been debating between Ferris, ariens, Scag, etc. but the battery and size of this unit are too tempting not to try. Arrives next week and hope that it performs reasonably well. If not, worst case it goes back to HD suppose, but fingers crossed that it will work out.
Ferris is THE number one when it comes to quality and longevity. The Ryobi is junk which you will soon find out..return it, spend a little more money and buy a Ferris and your great grand-kids will still be able to use it.
DonE 246 , Well iconically I called HD today to return / refuse the Ryobi prior to delivery attempt. As much as I really wanted the Ryobi to be the dream solution to our lawn cutting needs, it was too much of a struggle for the hypothetical Ryobi service options or unknowns if something were to go wrong. I did a test call for the Ryobi service on replacement parts and they didn’t have the info in their system yet. So a little too bleeding edge for what I can handle. Instead we purchased a 48” Scag Liberty 21HP mower, being delivered tomorrow. But really appreciate this quality video commentary and hope that the Ryobi works well, and that the parts network is successful as I’d likely be interested in an electric sometime down the road. Scag and fuel for now though as the “safer bet” near term. (Ferris 400s would have been fine, but less local area dealer support, so went Scag which is 10 mins away and convenient, plus 5 year warranty).
