Here’s how I saw it. I honestly believe people think Norton won because overall Ali sustained more damage.
Round 1
Ali begins the round winding up his right hand and planting himself, throwing punches flat footed however whilst he’s landing a few he’s soon on the back foot as Norton looking like he “means business” presses Ali. No punches of consequence landed but Ali lands more in this opening round whilst Norton is pressing.
Ali 10-9 Norton
Round 2
Norton comes out more aggressive landing slightly more punches. A right hand backs Ali up and Ali shakes his hips and mocks Norton, Mid round Ali begins increasing his punch output but most are evaded by Norton. The meaningful punches come from Norton in this round.
Ali 9-10 Norton
Round 3
Ali lands the first punch of the round a jab to the face. Norton is landing the heavier blows backing Ali up, Ali is throwing more but he’s also missing more. Towards the end of the round Norton is dominating and landing heavier but Ali is throwing plenty to keep Norton guessing its an even round.

Round 4
Ali has a very good round here backing up norton for the first time, landing 4 hard punches norton continues to have his successes also backing up Ali towards the end of the round, but overall Ali has out punched and outboxed Norton in this Round.

Early in the round Ali receives a warning for holding Norton around the back
Of the neck and pulling his head down. Immediately after Ali retreats to the ropes and starts shaking his hips and taunting Norton. Norton unloads on Ali with punches to head and body with enough landing to give this round easily to Norton

Round 6
Terrible round for Ali, norton immediately backs him up scoring with heavy punches. Ali tries extending his left arm out Norton just marches forward hitting the arm. Ali takes a beating in this round, doubling over in pain after Norton lands a very heavy hook to the body

Round 7
After 2 terrible rounds Ali finally begins throwing more punches and boxing and moving Norton is backed up after a 3 punch combo although Norton is still coming on strong Ali is throwing more and fighting harder.

Norton walks forward without concern for what’s coming back at him and takes a right hand from Ali flush on the jaw. It appears to have no effect. This round consists of Ali backing up to the ropes catching hooks to the body and head, whilst Ali manages to land combos on Norton frequently. An even Round

Ali comes out with a lot of circling movement jabbing moving not scoring much and not appearing to do much damage but enough to win the round

Near enough identical to previous round, with the difference being norton pressing harder. The harder punches coming from Norton but Ali is landing more

It’s Norton who goes to the ropes and showboats Ali lands a lot of right hands cleanly this is possibly Ali’s best round of the fight.

Pace drops both men have big successes in this round no clear winner. With the Heavier punches coming from Norton, Norton edges the round

Another close round, however Norton has more success punishing and trapping Ali on the ropes. Slight edge to Norton

Ali comes out with purpose snapping punches moving avoiding Norton’s punches. When norton pins Ali, Ali responds by slipping or tying Norton up.

This fight was very close.
Going into the last round it was still
Up for grabs. Ali’s corner encourages Ali to go all out for the win, Norton’s Corner tells him to play it safe the fight is in the bag.
They both followed their corners advice Ali wins the last round and then wins the fight.
A lot of people including Norton himself thought the decision was wrong. It’s razor close and One things for sure Ali got beat up badly in This fight. Although Ali won he took a worse beating. Nortons punches seemed more hurtful than Ali’s punches.
Ali’s decline was rapid after this fight.

Your highlights are always in amazing quality, but people must watch fights from start to finish to determine the winner. As much as I prefer Ali's looks, style and personality in and out the ring, I think Norton won the third fight. Ali won the second and Norton won the first.

Nah... this fight was close and could have went either way. Ali haters are the only people that think he lost. This fight easily could have went Ali by one round, Norton by one round, or 7-7-1 Draw.

I was finally convinced that Norton won this fight and he isn't a paper champion.
It did not help Ali that he gave away rounds five and six, but still a fight too close to call, probably a Draw because Norton didn't go and get the title like Spinks did
Ali name won some of his fights because he should’ve lost to Jimmy Young…sometimes it’s who’s name draws the most cash flow and I’m a big Ali fan.

Based on the 70s and Ali still beat him twice not to mention Ali never had a mark on him. In the 2 nd and 3rd fight Norton was swollen. 60s Ali would win easily.

Norton went into the last round convinced that he was far enough ahead that he could take the last round off and still win the fight.. what he doesn't realize is two of the judges had the fight even going into the last round. And the referee has Ali ahead by one round going into the last round
Which in itself was a crime. I had Ken ahead 9-5 going into the 15th. Ken made a mistake not fighting hard in the 15th, but you can even make a case for Ken winning that round too. It was a listless round for the most part with Ali doing little (Other than jabbing at air) and Ken doing virtually nothing. But Ken's big flurry in the last 20 seconds stole the round IMO. 10-5 Ken or 9-6 at minimum.

My opinion is that Ali deserved the win.
Yes, even though Ali got damage to his legs before ken norton fight and also while getting older Ali found a way to win but to be honest this match was draw. However he show that he was still great boxer despite he wasn't in his bright (prime) time.

Great video. However Ali did win. I studied and analyzed this fight many times. Ali won round 1,3,4,7,9,10,11,13, arguably the 12 as well. Round 12 was almost dead even. The fight scored 8-7 9-6 or 8-6 as it was scored. 95% of Alis landed punches were head shots which score more than body punches.
No, head shots don't count more than body shots. Look up the NY state scoring rules for boxing. Norton landed easily twice as many punches as Ali, and those that Ali landed had nothing on them. Nothing.

Man, please do the same thing in the fight between Ali and Frazier 1. I am not underestimating Frazier’s performance, but I think that Ali won the fight.

I think it was a good close fight. Which Ali won. No way did Norton do enough to take the title from Ali. When you’re the challenger you have to rip the title away. The 3rd man in the ring that night also thought Ali won, the very experienced Arthur Mercante.
What the heck was Norton being so tentative for? At this stage of his career Ali couldn't bust the proverbial grape. Norton could have bulldozed in like he did in his fight with Holmes - but he didn't! I think king Kenny won, but because it was such a dreadful fight, i couldn't care less. Glad that Ali got the win on his record because he had such an amazing career.
I gave the edge to Norton but he should've realized that most likely he would've lost without a knockout. Norton was shocked but he needn't be.
To all of you who think that Ali won the fight - well, Ali didn't think so. That's why left the ring so quickly, without giving an interview, which he always did.
No serious boxing fan believes Ali won this fight. Only the "Ali Was My Childhood Hero" people think he won it, and I think that attitude cheapens the huge wins and great performances he did actually have. This isn't one of them. He had nothing in this fight. The scoring result was an embarrassment. Ali had several moments in the 1970's where he looked good: the first half of Ali-Frazier 1 (1971), the second Ali-Quarry fight (1972), the Foreman fight (1974), the third Ali-Frazier fight (1975). But not here. If you want to see Ali really dominate, watch his 1960's fights.
How do you know that every single person who thought Ali won the fight is not a serious boxing fan? Does this mean Harold Lederman, Ed Schuyler, Mike Marley, Dave Anderson, Arthur Mercante, Larry Holmes and Dan Rafael are not serious boxing fans?

@@easy_eight2810 Ali did the same thing in the second Leon Spinks fight. Technically clinching and holding are against the rules, but it makes sense when you fight from the outside and somebody’s barreling in. I guess it’s only illegal if you get penalized for it lol.

Ya, Norton was robbed pretty badly in this one. People can say what they want, and everyone has a different opinion, but Norton won at least 7 rounds, if not 8, or 9. Basically, the judges gave Ali every swing round with the exception of 1 or 2 that they scored even. At worst, it should have been a split-decision victory for Norton. This fight reminds me a lot of Leonard vs Hagler. If you watch that fight without the audio, Hagler dominated every round but the first 2 (which he gave up to Leonard willingly). If that was a 15 rounder, Hagler would have probably KO'd Leonard. Even the commentators were having to talk up Leonards punches which were not crisp, and weren't landing clean, if at all. They were just flashy flurries at best. Meanwhile, almost every shot that landed from Hagler was damaging Leonard, and you could see the desperation on Leonards face at times when he was trapped on the ropes taking punishment to the body. It goes to show that the scoring system used in professional boxing at the highest level is seriously flawed, and prone to corruption, and bias, especially in title fights. That goes for all combat sports that use the 10 must system.
Ali fans do back flips to give the fight to him, but he was beaten and battered throughout the fight. Norton landed 87 more punches and was twice as accurate. Norton not only landed 87 more punches, but they were harder and did more damage. Ali got 11 gift decisions in his career. He should have been disqualified in Liston 2 and Bonavena for refusing to go to a neutral corner. He should have been disqualified vs Terrell for grabbing Terrell in a headlock, rubbing Terrell's face on the ropes, while poking his thumb into Terrell's eyes.

Ali had the better movement with accurate chances of attacking and protecting completely as his style, but Norton too emphasized to attack him severely making his biff moderately unclear and inaccurate except only severity. That's reason why Norton was mistakable to beat Ali.

This fight sucked ,the judges scored the fight rd by rd almost the same ,there was no robbery .Jimmy Young beat Norton hands down and they gave Norton the nod .I always thought in the Ali fights the commentators where biased for Norton.

To really score this fight properly the first ten rounds require more analysis in my opinion because I felt this may have been reason the judges gave it to Ali because there were a few there that were very close and difficult to score. What's everyone's views on the first ten rounds I may have to re watch it again :bump

I completely agree with your assessment of this controversial bout. Final punch stats can often be misleading and of course the judges have no access, but in this fight Norton landed 286 to Ali's 199 overall and held a 192-128 power punch advantage. The challenger attacked Ali's body non-stop w/ punishing shots and mixed it up by connecting upstairs accurately. Norton was dominant and deserved to have his hand raised as undisputed heavyweight champion.
