You guys are so down to earth and appreciative of everyone's different needs. Really nice to see such a balanced and "eyes open" rationale of what you're doing. There are not many people who travel in, let alone live out of a Series Landy so definitely good to know how you arrived at this decision. I have a 109 too so its very inspiring. Thanks!
I have been in to old Land Rovers for more than 33 years, and had them as my daily, doing more than 25.000 km a year, and never had them let me down. I now have an 1963 109" Series IIA. People will tell you that Land Rovers are unreliable, but they are not more unreliable than other old cars, if you treat them well (service often) and don't rev them to death at highway speeds. That said, as it's an old construction they will need more maintenance than other cars of the same age. But as the saying goes, look after your Land Rover, and it will look after you. Upgrades I will recommend for your Landy will be, an electronic ignition, (and do carry and extra module). Fit a Winch. a Hi-Lift jack, Sand Ladders, an air compressor, a Snorkel and a shovel. Good luck with your Landy and I wish you all the best.
You are going to love that Ser.3 109. So many thousands have travelled around the world in one - why not you ? Remember you can basically go anywhere with one, BUT never be in too much of a hurry ! Rigging it is like a Meccano set. Is it a 2.25 petrol engine ? If so, you will have to shoot it to kill it. Look after it and it will always get you there and back. Good luck with the planned revamp and then enjoy !!
Thanks Henry! We’re definitely in no rush to get anywhere thankfully 😂 yes it’s a 2.25 petrol engine. So far it’s running really well. They really are a labour of love!
So exciting! Bush company rtt and 270 awnings are next level 🙌🏼 especially when having your cooking area out the back. The wrap around shade on the roof top tent is so good. And having a free standing awning is awesome for pack up and set up when you’re constantly moving.
When you start rooftop tent shopping I would highly recommend a pop top roof top tent rather then a fold out roof top tent. While the pop tops are smaller they save so much time setting up. My husband and I travelled around Australia in our troopy and had a fold out tent and we found it took so much time to set up every time we got to a camp! They hold up really good in wind though You will love the places the new car can take you! We ended up upgrading our old troopy in the end and brought a comfy hilux! We are about to hit the road again in 2 months with our 2 border collies and might see you on the road 😊
Good to see you guys are keeping the natural look and character of the vehicle totally agree with how your going about this looking forward to it all enjoy
Hi Guys, I am new to your channel and really looking forward to the rebuild of your new vehicle. You have chosen a fantastic vehicle as I think the Land Rover Series 3 109" is the ultimate expedition vehicle that will take you anywhere in the world that you wish to travel. A far as roof tents go, the Australian made ARB Simpson 3 Roof tent with Annex is a very good option. The alternatives are mostly from South Africa and I would recommend Front Runner, we have used them for many years and they are also very good. Also The Front Runner roof rack and the system for fixing gear to the roof rack is very good.
We loved Vance & your adventures with him. But Nigel will take us all to every corner of Australia. I'm so excited about the build & to go on many adventures with the four of you.
Totally with you on the whole 'standing room' thing in a van. I was so close to getting a pop top van thinking I'd want the headroom but honestly I've found I really don't need it! My kitchen is at the back so I'm cooking outside anyway, and then when I'm in my van I'm chilling sitting down or asleep! Plus like you said, the cost of pop top conversions is insane!!!
Welcome to the family Nigel, really looking forward to getting to those little hard to get at places that only a 4be can get to which makes it a more Intimate adventure. The basis of exploring is to be where few have been. Lovin it guys 👍
I feel like Nigel is going to serve you well.. i am super excited to see where he takes you! I am obsessed with the whole overlanding concept atm. I mean, you can do it in a van, or a subaru (like i do) but Nigel is hardcore! So exciting! Have fun with the build if you can. Build it with love ❤️ and your home will always be your haven.
There is a lot of hate out there towards Land Rovers... funny VWs cop it as well, and yet they are some of the most sold vehicles of their kind in the world. Funny thing is, at least 4 armies in the world have been using them for decades, and up until Land Cruisers and Hiluxes became the go to for the pastoral and mining industries they were the Kings of the off road. Many of Australia's legendary outback travellers used Landys without fail... Len Beadell, Harry Butler, and the Leyland Brothers, are all good examples. The secret is...regular services, keep a check on all the nuts and bolts and remember it's 40 years old just like Vance and treat it that way. A tip - stick with 16 inch steel rims, but take your tyres out to 235/85R16 tyres at the widest. I stuck with 7.50 16 Desert Duellers for years, and still rate them as the best all round off road tyre. When I started my tour business, I went to the 235/85's for a bit more road comfort. Wide tyres for sand is one of the biggest myths out there... a 7.50 16 tyre at 15psi in sand will go further with less problems than a wide 15 inch. And skip the whole big wheels with chunky treads... they howl like a bitch on bitumen, skate on gravel and dig holes in sand. They also get you further through mud puddles to a point where digging your way out is much harder. And the best place for a winch is at the back! ;-) Glad you found the Regency guys easy enough to deal with, I've never had a problem with them. Those that do are generally the clowns who aren't prepared to listen. Most things they pick are simple fixes or big ones that should have been sorted way before an inspection.
Totally agree! As with all old vehicles, give them love and theyll love you right back. Sometimes throw a spanner in the works from time to time but that's half the fun!
@@KendallandGlenn hi from the sunny beaches of far North Queensland! Me, My wife and three kids are planning to go full time travelling but not with any of these flash caravans, just simple, old school, back to basics nomadic lifestyle 😎🤙
Facts are . . Developing a van that suites your own needs. If every one lived in a van forever we would not need houses. And there fore families or kitchens or lawns or carpenters. Ect ect. The concept of a van is for a holiday adventure. Again facts are people are so strapped at this point in time our cars are our homes and it is what it is. I have been in my car for 3 yrs . I don't have coin to go or do any thing it is what it is. 🤷 a carton of milk is a luxury. And that's a fact . Have a great day I do things that are with in my reach and not live beyond my means or expectations ... Davi b
they were designed for the farm. They are good vehicles if they can be made reliable. They did help open up the interior of Australia, and Africa. Used all over the Empire. I have a soft spot for LRs. However, check everything for reliability Watertight? No No. After you ford the river, you want water to escape. Australian army LRs were all converted to Usuzu engines for reliability
You must have patients is all I can say… I bought one the same back in the 1980’s … A 2.25 diesel…. Guaranteed the slowest car on the road! I was heading north towards Newcastle crossing the Hawkesbury and heading up hill … Only to be overtaken by a split window kombi van … I didn’t think such embarrassment was possible… I went home and installed a 186 Holden engine… Not powerful, but not so embarrassing

Thanks so much Liv! Great advice that we will definitely be taking :)
Why have a kombi, if we ever upgrade we will look into a Syncro Vanagon, gain some interior space as well, not much but it will help.

Thanks Leah!! Such good timing, we actually just went ahead with that exact set up!! Can’t wait to get it fitted, the awning looks soo nice 🙌🏼🙌🏼

Thanks so much! We love the classic look of them 😊

Hey Alan, thanks so much for following along and for giving us those recommendations, they’re great! Really appreciate the help :)

Aww thank you for always supporting our journey, Storm. We can’t wait to take you on our adventures in Nigel! 🥰
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. A lot of the enjoyment is to think it through and make it your own. Gonna have fun with Nige…..enjoy!!!

So true! Of course if we had a spare $10k+ to spend on standing up we’d go for it 😅 but it’s actually so doable without one!

Love the vehicle choice and totally agree with your fit out plans. Looking forward to the next episodes and seeing it come together. Good luck!

Good practical approach to Nigel. Are you concerned about the body flexing if the cabinets fit too close?
Love ❤ your work .
All the best 👍
Have a look at going overland ev video. Future ideas. He talks about 4x4 transfer and camper trailer with batteries to increase range. Russell
Will do! Thanks for the rec!

Karijini version 2.0 2023?? Lol
Don’t tempt us! 😉
Last thing I’d use for travel… rather walk !
I guess it’s a good thing you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to then!
