I’m surprised the Nurburgring doesn’t have a section named after the second greatest German F1 driver Vettel but I guess the name doesn’t really roll well for a straight or corner name does it?
There was no need to slow Silverstone down in the 90s, we lost a classic speed bowl with its chicane blighted layout. The 2010 changes brought in another straight and higher speeds so they were a win win for me
1949-1974 layout is the best imo. its so fast and you can really fell the elavation change even when in a sim. 2nd layout in a late 60s f1 car is fucking incredible
The track is great now, I just wished they could have kept the old Bridge complex. I went a few times during the mad V10 era and it was an immense pleasure watching them drop through the bridge
The old Silverstone Circuit when Michael Schumacher, Mikka Häkkinen, David Coulthard and so forth drove was the best Circuit WE Had in F 1. All other circuits WE Had Afterwards were nothing more than crap.
For me 87 to 90 is the best. This layout is still a speed track that tests the car and driver to the limit with its high speed coeners but the added chicane after abby also challenges them both with hard breaking with precision steering needed to carry as much speed as possible into Woodcote and the start finish straight. Get it wrong and you will be passed. Although I do enjoy the Maggots Becketts complex of today, it is not as big a challenge because of the slower speeds. Ive seen this complex live in both configurations is fantasic bit the older version was just harder for the drivers to get right, even with full ground effects and skirts. I think it was a huge mistake to do what they did with moving the pits and adding that whole section from Club to Woodcotte.
1991-3 was the best. It was the biggest test of man and machine, Abbey was flat out, and Bridge needed a breathe of the throttle. Much harder on tyres and driver strength.
'so frequent' the circuit has had 9 changes in 75 years, at least half of which were reprofilings of a corner or two, not major reworks. what exactly is frequent about that?
video games are really fun. they show how hyper relevant the older games can be. with games you dont need to worry about safety limits, virtual safety cars or other that kind of junk but just the thrill of the racing. i feel the older games are better and the future games would be better off not trying to be super realistic. like who wants their game to red flag always when it starts to rain? and yea its relevant because supposedly half the track changes are due to safety.
Great video! But moving the start/finish line to between club and abbey?... That would mean re-building the pit lane, the garages and all the associated buildings, at great expense. Why did they do this?
Bridge would be nothing with today's downforce levels, and the Abbey chicane before it removed any challenge. Nah. At least there's more overtaking with the changes
More overtaking since the 2010 change 1980s Silverstone was a flat out blast, 1990s was a chicane ridden borefest. At least the 2010 version makes them reduce downforce loads a tad, making for better racing
@@cdname47 yeah bridge was a great corner but priory and old brooklands were borderline insufferable. I don’t like the loop complex of the new layout but new abby + farm as well as new brooklands more than make up for it.
Killed it when the Woodcote chicane was introduced. To see Ronnie Peterson drift round Woodcote in the 72 was magical. Was there when Rosberg did the fastest ever lap on a damp circuit (with the chicane!) 160 mph. Gone forever in the maze of slow corners and bus stops.
That last change has completely ruined the circuit and as a consequence, the British Grand Prix. It used to be 200 quid for a weekend ticket opposite the podium. Now that they've spunked all that money on the changes, they need to offer payment plans so that people can buy tickets.
The track lost it's briliant characteristic of speed and fast corners starting in 1991 and has never been the same since . Now its got to many slow corners and many of of the straights have been shortened. No where near as bad as Hockenhiem or Austia but bad enough.

Great work! Only one correction: the start/finish line moved between Woodcote and Copse in 1953, not in 1975.
Never realized this track stayed unchanged for almost 30 years
What a mistake to get rid of bridge, to watch an F1 car go thru there flat out was amazing !
0:16 big difference
1997-2010 was by far the best in my opinion. Flying through Abbey ->Bridge-> Priory was a blast with the perfect setup.
UA-cam algorithm puts this in my recommended after the 'Hamilton straight' is created 🤩

Agree as good as the Wellington straight is for action the previous layout just flowed better

I know the layout from 99-2001 the best, I played as a kid a lot. I prefer that layout and bridge was nice. This track is very very different
Ideal layout in my opinion is 1987-1990 one but with nowadays Maggots, Becketts and Chapel.

1997-2010 the best.
Abbey into bridge 👌🏻 even better for the bikes as Abbey was a flat out left handed not a chicane
The old Silverstone Circuit when Michael Schumacher, Mikka Häkkinen, David Coulthard and so forth drove was the best Circuit WE Had in F 1. All other circuits WE Had Afterwards were nothing more than crap.
The track underwent major changes only in 1991 and 2011
Or how to ruin Club corner. At the Maggots-Beckets section was improved to make up for it.
A whole village just took over a part of the track
Wow thanks locals
The 1948-49 version looks like hell of a track. I spy at least 5 overtaking spots (maybe 6).
FIA "we should add some more chicanes"
interesting how the v10 era silverstone was also better than the current one... weird how so much was better back then.
0:20 is the silverstone that is used in the game "Ala Mobile GP"

Start finish is before Abbey but Moto GP still starts before Copse, so you could place 🏁 at both points
1991-3 was the best. It was the biggest test of man and machine, Abbey was flat out, and Bridge needed a breathe of the throttle. Much harder on tyres and driver strength.
God I miss the old layout
These changes are so frequent. Does the FIA have time to 'confirm' it's safety characteristics and such between changes?
oh hell yes. No one makes a move on F1 tracks (or anyone w/ an FIA certification in general) w/o the FIA's approval.
'so frequent' the circuit has had 9 changes in 75 years, at least half of which were reprofilings of a corner or two, not major reworks. what exactly is frequent about that?
So, there isn't a single yard left of the original layout?
Nope
the straight from maggots and becketts to stowe i think
The original pit straight and the straight leading into Stowe are both part of the original layout
The 49-74 layout was the easiest to build with Scalextric.
When i play the f1 games i always get confused where the start finish strate is. I wish silverstone keeps and used the original start finish strate

No idea. But it create an unique event in 2010, where driver pitted and started somewhere else apart

Sadly this doesn't includes changes for shorter, other versions of cirrcuit, this video represents only changers to outer track.

I personally like the 1949 - 1974 version the most. Most of the tracks are being destroyed by constantly changing the layout.
Seems like this is a continuous process to reach the perfect track.

Best one is without a doubt 1991-1993. The flow was really really good and they slowly ruined it. Worst is probably 1948-1949 or 1975-1986
Couldn't they just have left it as it had been for 30 years up to 1974 with its simple great design?
For me they killed the circuit when they added the chicane.
May as well put speed bumps down hanger straight & traffic lights at maggots.
