Harnoncourt and Leonhardt. My favorites when I first discovered baroque. And this is my favorite Brandenburg. Imagine writing such sublime music and never to hear it played in your lifetime???

By far the best recording I've heard and I've heard many. I still have the album.

For me, Adolf Busch is the one, but, I agree, this is beautiful too.

This is what Bach would have heard had it been played in public during his lifetime. (Of course, he heard it inside his head as he wrote it.) Harnoncourt used instruments of the period, recorded in a Baroque-era hall and had even changed the tempi to what was closer to the tempi of Bach's own time based on his forensic studies in musical history. BTW, that's Harnoncourt playing the harpsichord.

Though (IMO) Harnoncourt's first Brandenburg set, as a whole, has been surpassed many times since, this remains my favorite 5th. It is so perfectly paced and nuanced, with a truly fiery harpsichord cadenza. I've never heard it done better. I've had this set on LP since my high school days, later purchased the Barclay-Crocker open reel, and now own the CD, as well.

What do you think of his 1982 version? I might order it before you reply but would be interesting to hear your thoughts if you know it. My personal favourite recording is the one by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment directed by Leonhardt.

@@Vingul I have the 82 recording but still prefer the 62 disc. There is just a sense of organic life and soul that is missing in the somewhat mannered 82 account. If by Leonharft, you mean the Seon recording from the 70s, that came with a facsimile of Bach manuscript, I have two copies on LP and the CD issue. I think that is a first rate set in every way, including the 5th. The trumpeter, Claude Rippas, was one of the best clarino players ever.

@@LyleFrancisDelp I see! Thank you for the quick and informed response. I'm looking at versions from the same seller now released in '67 and in '82. Might try both...
I felt almost certain that the recording I'm thinking of by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment was directed by Gustav Leonhardt, but I can't find the director credits now; have yet to receive my copy. It's from '87-'88 and released in '89, and I know that he directed that orchestra (and choir) in the early 1990s (Cantatas BWV 205 & 204). I will see if I can find the Seon recording you mention. Thanks again.

@@Vingul If you collect LPs, that original edition is lovely, and comes with a facsimile of Bach’s original score. I’ve seen a lot of copies on EBay, and they usually sell at reasonable prices. Yes, I also have the ABC/Seon CD issue.

@@LyleFrancisDelp I ended up only ordering the 1982 edition, to save the money for now (it was one third of the price); my main reason for making the order was the full Secular Cantatas by Harnoncourt (though I ended up also getting "Die Orgelwerke" by Helmut Walcha and other records). I will definitely keep the "erstaufnahme", original recording in mind for another time!
