Me and my dad were driving back south from the upper peninsula of Michigan to bloomingdale michigan had this on 8 track were driving a implala had a transplanted 396 engine we flying down the road like 90 to 110 mph got passed by a corvette and cops pulled the vett over! Good times!!!
Right? I picked this up on used vinyl today. Chose this specifically because I had 2 friends who recently passed who were much bigger fans of Waylon than myself, and I’m now seeing why. I picked this album specifically because I’m such a big and picky fan of Buddy Holly’s. It’s hard to do a Buddy Holly cover well. I’d never heard Waylon’s covers before, but knew the back story of him giving up his seat on the plane that crashed, and killed Holly. Waylon pays so much respect to Buddy here, he covers Buddy well, and stays true to his own style as well. It’s a perfect mix, and hearing it for the first time ever today on vinyl, and then realizing that I own that, it felt like Waylon was playing live in my room, and also felt like I was a kid hearing Buddy again for the first time, in the style of Waylon! Incredible.
i met waylon in 1979 in pgh pa. at the stanley theather he was awsome one long table of beer one of food the girl sellin the ol waylon shirts took me and my mother back to see him i was only 12 and just happy as shit i got to meet waylon
Pure outlaw. No crap or plastic imitation Ole waylon was a real bad ass, who lived his Jessie. God bless you cowboy. Rip.. Sleep peaceful on the trail.
Well considering both Waylon and buddy were fans and friends of Elvis and Waylon and Elvis shared multiple songs I’d say there are 3 kings and they all influenced each other.
Waylon had never released any music by the time buddy died. Waylon and buddy we’re good friends and Waylon played bass for buddy when the crickets left. The day buddy died him and Waylon were eating hotdogs and buddy told Waylon he he was scared to fly because he gave up his seat to the bopper. So Waylon joked we’lol I hope your ole plane crashes and buddy said I hope your ole bud freezes up. That was the last thing Waylon said to buddy and it haunted him for the rest of his life.
Saw Waylon & the Crickets in Owings Mills, Maryland in the mid-80's. The Crickets opened the show and were just starting to play some Holly tunes when Waylon quietly joined them on stage without being introduced. The place was shaking when everyone realized there was a 4th Cricket out there pickin' and singing.
@@happyolddude Gordon did sing lead with the Crickets but not on this recording. I don't remember the years he was a member of the group. When I saw them in Owings Mills in the mid-80's, Sonny Curtis was singing lead and playing guitar
@@jackmiller9310 Thank you but I think you will find that Sonny and Gordon shared lead singing when they toured with Waylon. On their final Lp Gordon was singing lead. I have both their email addresses here so will write to them. Thanks for your contribution.
Waylon Jennings and Buddy Holly were friends. He was once in Holly's band on a touring gig. After Holly died he did some of his songs in tribute and also did them with the Crickets.
"On a touring gig"... yeah he was on Buddy's FINAL touring gig The Winter dance Party tour! That night Jennings and Buddy were just messin with each other when Buddy said to him "I hope your ass freezes on the bus" and Waylon replied "I hope your plane crashes". He felt guilty for that, for years after.
waylon said he never stoped playing him and buddys old texas rock and roll he said everybody else changed starting calling the same music diffrent terms, Rock & Roll for life
Rory K.....I was at that concert at the Stanley. We were tripping! The Crickets opened, then Jesse, then ol' Waylon tore the the place up! Great show. Wait, that wasn't in '79, more like '84 or so...sorry. You were lucky to meet a legend. Peace Jeff T. PGH PA
Mr. Waylon is and always will be a legend, awesome to see he’s showing respect to one that took him under his wing. Remember listening to both of them in my dads cabover peterbilt in the 80’s
Waylon sang Buddy's songs at the Winter Dance hours after hearing about Buddy's death. It was a sad gig but Waylon sang great. He sings at a slightly slower pace than Buddy. Imagine having to sing with no time to grieve. Talbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
Buddy is the true King of Rock period. the most influential force of Rock and roll. every rock band that formed after his death has Buddy Holly DNA. from the Beatles to today music.
After six years,Mr Holly is still the true King of Rock n Roll enough said, Elvis Presley was just a fancy dancer who couldn't write a song like Mr Holly,at least people on here agree with me and that makes me happy
Waylon played bass for Buddy and they flipped for who got to fly and who would drive. Someone else got the seat Waylon would have had on that plane that crashed and took Buddy, The Bopper and Ritchie Valens. fate????
Here in 2023 !!! Buddy lives in all music !!

One Texan respecting another great artist's legacy. God bless Texas 🙌
May The music and memory of Buddy and Waylon live forever
Buddy Holly and Waylon Jennings are the greatest of all time.
I love all the outlaw country pickers. Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard being front and center.
Truly a tribute to Buddy Holly's musical genius without sacrificing the Waylon style!

He saved the best for last...insanely great version of Peggy Sue ..one of the most important rock tunes of all time.
Thank God we still had Waylon
Love Buddy and Waylon, I do find this a little sad though because I know how much his death haunted him :(
He and Buddy Holly were great friends. Buddy picked him for his bassist on that last tour. He plays all these song well. Thanks.
The playing on this is expert! Those Nashville cats knew what they were doing at every point.
Cut in l.a.; cobbled together from songs intended for a Holly tribute album. Backed by the Crickets: produced by Waylon’s husband-in-law, Duane Eddy.
Gonna think positive:"I hope your old Holly songs are smashing"!('stead of "plane stuff"he said to him-they were both exhausted & joking)

Elvis was friends with the Big Bopper and gifted a floral guitar to his funeral
waylon was buddy holly guitarist a couple times
Yep and the big bopper is the famous DJ who exposed Elvis to Texas and they were best friends

When I was a student at Arizona State, JD's was just down the street. Waylon was there 3 nights a week...FREE!
Elaine. Waylon loved Arizona. Especially Phoenix. He's buried in Arizona.
Love it!!! Waylon's tribute to Buddy

That would have been with Gordon Payne singing lead? His dads name was Wayne Payne!
@@happyolddude No, Gordon wasn't singing lead on this one. That's definitely Waylon singing.

Waylon gave his seat to Buddy on the plain that crashed. Waylon always blamed himself for buddy's death.
