@@fpsaddicted1 I could be way off base, but I get the feeling that Lyla uses language like that to demystify these techniques and make things feel manageable. So often it feels like there is a huge gulf between "table-ready" base-wash-drybrush style and compition level stuff her videos make better painting make sense.
Lyla, I'm perpetually impressed by the sheer quality of information you present in your videos. Each one has multiple game-changing perspectives and I can't get over it. You're so amazing!! Keep it up!
Woah. What a coincidence. I just started learning about atmosphere and different light moods and painted a test model...that is running towards a fire at night. So just like your diorama in general. Since then I was wondering how to get it to the next level, and...here comes your video. Thanks, helps a lot!
Another great tutorial with lots of good tips and techniques which will help with my upcoming effort to try OSL…..thanks very much for your time and efforts!
This video I really helpful, I'm still struggling to get a good blend going so these paint hacks are right up my alley! Especially the ready made palettes with skin tones on them, that's a fantastic tool for a beginner.
Very good explained :) as always! Contrast is something a lot of people are a bit afraid of when they start out, but getting that really dark and really bright places, man, it makes such a difference! Interesting to hear about the different mood settings and getting them explained, I´ve had then in my head, but I did not know how to explain them, so thank you for putting words to how I feel about that topic :D and thank you for sharing ;) 💜
That moviepage seems like a win! I tried watching paintings in the same way and managed a good "rembrandt" chaos knight. But I think movies in general are better for color inspiration
This was a super useful video (and timely) as I've been trying to work on busts again and have been struggling with getting the skin tone (and overall palette) to look more natural (and a bit of analysis paralysis as it has been a while.)
love this (and i find yr use of art theory and abstraction to be a balm in a field where so many focus on notions of 'realism' which often leads to just... uninteresting work.)
thanks to address my comment from one of your previous video. I'll try zenithal highlight with drybrush as don't own an airbrush. hopefully it will work :D
You used BOTH Object Source Lighting OSL (the camp fire) and Zenithal (from the Zenith i.e. the moon lighting). Beautiful work. zI loved your eye comment as I find beginners overly concerned with painting in eyes.
Whoa! Incredible techniques and equally incredible pedagogy. I feel like I’m going to make bold choices on my next mini. What are you using to fill in the digital versions of your minis? It it just a photo and a drawing app?
I always thought that it didn't really matter that I have the artistic ability of a small pebble. I was good enough at painting shapes to get by. Now I've moved from table top minis to busts and larger scale display pieces, my lack of artistic ability (colour theory, understanding light, being able to picture things in my head rather than having to actually see them in reality!) is starting to hold me back. I guess I just need to find my own style. Am I alone in experiencing this?
you nailed it. this is something i always struggle with. Seems so unnatural to have harsh boundaries and large colour changes but in fact is totally natural. I wonder why our brains perceive it that way when it comes to painting minis.
@Lyla Mev what's the tablet and software you're using there? I know you talked about it in a video, but i couldn't find it just now and probably would take me days to :D

I am 17 second into this and I have ONE major issue. These aren't tricks that make ppl.think you are good. The use for atmosphere, contrast, and texture are just fundamental elements of painting. If you use the theories underneath these well it makes your stuff better than if painted without. Regardless of technical skill.
Of course, but these are skills that can be applied without great skill in painting. The details are what most people find difficult, so I've created an equation without them. Paint to thick? Fine. Can't paint eyes? Still good. Hate glazing? No worries here.
That is fair, I think injist have a thing against when ppl refer to learning the theories as "cheating" cause IMO it is the furthest thing from cheating.
nice video - but you need MORE CONTRAST to make it good..... but seriously, more contrast isn't something you can guarantee. That phrase is nothing but a shitty meme.
Check out Loot Studios here! bit.ly/3ii374q
love them.
This is not cheating. This is legit just wow. I've never ever seen any other miniature painter use lighting etc like this
That is very kind!
@@LylaMev you are most welcome. After this I have subbed thanks for the privilege.
The way you paint is like you are painting on canvas. And that's something completely new

there is a lot of "pro" guide outside, but i learned more with you in two days than the last three month!

That stippling blending looks really good is that the loaded brush technique?
Nope! Loaded brush is 2 colors on the brush at once, not just one at a time
