I got two completely different things from this. 1. thin your paints to make it faster and easier and 2. Thin your paints to greatly reduce wasted paint (I'm stingy!).
If I'm looking for a silver lining in this video, I think it's the reminder that we have/use tools for a reason, and you're not "cheating" if a tool (in this case water) gives you a better result in a shorter amount of time. And the corolary being that it's not a flex to make thing unnecessarily harder for yourself just to end up with a worse result.
I use gsw acrylic thinner instead of water for actually thinning the paints and I use my wet palette pretty seldom, but I can't imagine having a proper painting session without a water pot.
Interesting experiment, I do think thinning paint is an important part of the learning process since it gives us an understanding of how the paint behaves at different consistencies, and I'm way more comfortable creating an opaque layer through several thin coats than I am with thick coats, but it just goes to show that if you understand your paints and how to use them, you can get good results even when restricting your process, if you put in enough effort.
I dont know how you did it. You managed to completely out do me without even thinning your paints. Good job. I cant imagine why you would ever want to lick your brush though. That seems hazardous.
Zumikito where have you been you have helped me so much with painting and im genuinely sad to see your not uploading i love your content and I want to see more videos you lowkey saved my hobby painting with your videos. Thank you
Try coating the mini with pigment binder & muxing your paint with pigment binder in your pallets. I recommend the Vallejo one. As for paints try the scale 75 Artist line.
I mean... What about contrast paints, or shades, or Vallejo xpress series? Sure you can thin them out with medium, but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense for most of them.
you know what the funny thing about this video is? it has proven to me that painting with paints straight from the pot is not the worst idea (I don’t think my paints with water at all, nor do I rarely ever spray base)
Airbrush paints: "Yeah we are the best." Like Vallejo AIR steel which is 1 to 1 leadbelcher is perfect to such a degree you have to wait 2 mins for it to be like a regular paint and it flows so great. Also, Zumikito is a cultured person for painting Kingdom Death!
I mean, it makes sense to use thicc paint for a model like this. Loving this mini, KDM always has that very fine level of detail that makes it stand out. Also thighs. And hair too. Now to paint a mini using finger paints. ^_^
Time is always the key resource. The more time and practice you put in the better (and quicker) you will get at anything. Buying more paints and brushes will not make someone a better a better painter - only time spent actually using them will! This is true for any skill.
As someone who has painted with unthined paint (oil and acrylic), I highly suggest using a flat brush or filtbit. It will give a lot better results than a detail brush.
What's the best brand of brushes? I am not getting lucky with them and they fray at the edges quickly even when I'm being gentle during painting. What am I doing wrong?😅
Thinning your paints is easy mode and very helpful to beginners. When you get more experience you can mix it up. Great experiment and very useful to see the recovery from mistakes.
Kind of off topic but...Any suggestions for someone who is getting back into the painting hobby after a long break and has developed a minor tremor in their dominate hand? Also so you know what I'll be painting, if it helps I will be attempting to paint Frostgrave cultist as my first foray back into the hobby.
Zumikito be like : T H I G H T ! Think again 😠 ! T H I C C T H I G H T ! OK Zumikito, you've got my attention, even the "clickbait" title isnt this strong in comparison. Jokes aside, with every video, what a leap in the editing departement👏.
Absolute madman - well done! How though did you rinse your brush as you went? I'm constantly rinsing as I'm over paranoid if paint drying in the brush - so may be doing it too iften
In the next video, you don't need a brush to paint a miniature. Then proceeds to finger paint and use a toothpick and paint to a better standard than I can paint normally. 😂
I think Ninjon may have done a finger painted mini video already so perhaps the next one could be painting a mini without the mini, just build up paint layer upon layer until a mini appears.
I'm assuming you gave up on the idea of not cleaning your brush. That brush looks way too clean, wouldn't it get all rubbery and make it extremely difficult to change colours without mixing them on the brush?
Over a painting session, without cleaning the brush, how did you stop it just drying paint in the bristles and ruining it? Did you just eat the paint constantly?
I will not use anything to dilute the paint... except for my own spit! However, my simple question is why would anyone paint without some kind of thinning solution and some kind of cleaning solution for their brushes? This is like saying that you want to fight someone with both of your arms tied behind your back along with one of your legs. Yes, it can be done, however this is setting the difficulty of the task to the hardest level possible for no reason at all!
i like the idea and the message but doesn't licking your brush kinda defeat the whole purpose xD? ( i do also sometimes barely use water for some parts of my miniatures :p )
I mentioned in the note of one scene that I made sure to just lick off the paint without diluting it. Sometimes i barely use glass with water as well BUT that's only when I use a wet palette
Not very smooth. That's better than 90% of painters doing their very best work haha. Amazing job and a brilliant video, pointless but so much fun to watch. I guess it proves you can paint even in a drought?!
@@Zumikito yeah I couldn’t get my head around it, I will need to do the same experiment to understand because when I paint I find dilution is one of the most important things for me and the only way I learn is by trying things out myself so I will give it a go 😎
I use a wet palette, but I’ve largely stopped thinning my paints beyond what the wet palette already does. A lot of hobby paints are already very thin, and if you’re careful, they’re fine out of the bottle.
i hope after all that brush licking you basically had THE best Beverage You could think of For how It Was not a very good feeling after finishing the mini

Ahh a man of knowledge 😂
TWO THIN COATS!!!!

Next video : You don´t need light to paint miniatures! *clips down NVG and still achieves better results than I do *
Video after that: you don't need a miniature to paint a miniature! *Some how gets the paint to stick to air and manifests a space marine*
Do you need a miniature to paint miniatures?
Paints one on the desk
You don't need brushes nor light (get a clean glass jar, drop paint and a mini in there, shake, done)

Wow you think we shouldn't be painting in the dark with sticks like cavemen did back when people did REAL art? THINK AGAIN
It's still vastly better than I can achieve with water. Bravo on the fine paint job good sir
I use gsw acrylic thinner instead of water for actually thinning the paints and I use my wet palette pretty seldom, but I can't imagine having a proper painting session without a water pot.
Great video mate, loving the set upgrades too 👌
The absolute mad man.
Marvelous video my dude! Interesting concept!
Great model and great paintwork!
Wonder what the model is called?
oh la la, new studio! its beautiful!

No worries, I will be back to uploading soon
Nice exercice et great result.

I love that little nurlgette in the background, great video btw
Reaper paints are very diluted when you buy them, and the ONLY ones I would ever touch a model with straight out of the bottle.
I mean... What about contrast paints, or shades, or Vallejo xpress series? Sure you can thin them out with medium, but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense for most of them.
@@MrPuzzles I should've been more clear, I was meaning regular paints, not any of the technical paints. You are correct about that.
"I think its pretty ok" as he paints better than anything I've ever done lol

I was gonna make that same joke
Know what the mini is called?
The sanding block scares me, I'd be too afraid of ruining the mini

Smoothikito without water painting smoother than me with all the water I want
"I am not very excited about it because its not very smooth".... Meanwhile it looks like something I won't be able to achieve for the next 10 years xD
zumi just stumbled upon your channel, im not learning to paint, may never, but just keep talking and painting please
Compliments on the choice of miniature for a thick paint tutorial
As someone who has painted with unthined paint (oil and acrylic), I highly suggest using a flat brush or filtbit. It will give a lot better results than a detail brush.
Yes! With glaze medium… got me before you started painting 😂
I'll try on next one 😁
You were so preoccupied with whether or not you could that you didn't stop to think if you should! 😃
What's the best brand of brushes? I am not getting lucky with them and they fray at the edges quickly even when I'm being gentle during painting. What am I doing wrong?😅
- Zumikito, which are your favorite paints?
- A pint of AK orange red
God I love finding new painters to follow!! Subscribed bro
Looks gorgeuos want to paint all my kingdom death miniature after I add magnets to all the joints
Paint still looks good

1:38 nice even ~as...~ layer
did I only just find your channel and now I have a little crush? maybe
Quick answer, Yes it's called dry brushing and it's great for painting lots and lots of space marines and necrons in a short period of time.
great channel
No way!😊❤

What grit of sand paper is good to sand accidental texture back? I have this issue even with well thinned paint
Skvělý. Jako vždycky.
And of course, Licking your brush adds…..moisture 😅

I'd be happy with a mini looking like that at the end I'd say its higher quality than table top but then again I'm no where near as good as you
Absolute madman - well done! How though did you rinse your brush as you went? I'm constantly rinsing as I'm over paranoid if paint drying in the brush - so may be doing it too iften
Next video paint blindfolded using only your fingers. Wins golden demon!
whats the model

What did I learn from this? That licking your brushes will make your miniatures 5x smoother.
I'm assuming you gave up on the idea of not cleaning your brush. That brush looks way too clean, wouldn't it get all rubbery and make it extremely difficult to change colours without mixing them on the brush?
Where is the minature from?
Over a painting session, without cleaning the brush, how did you stop it just drying paint in the bristles and ruining it? Did you just eat the paint constantly?
Yes and I also wiped it into my glove after licking.
@@Zumikitolicking is still using water though
I suspect Sam Lenz would be great at this challenge.
Where is that mini from?
I feel like licking the brush just defeated the whole purpose.
Well, you're applying thick paint to a thicc model. I see no problem here.
Oil paints would like to have a word with you.
But... For what?
For the Emperor
For Johnny, man.
😭😭
@@Zumikito nailed it
For frodo
This basicly how i paint acept i clean my brushes My pallet is aliminium so its good for spreading paint before use it
I think the way the skin was painted without water would be good for painting textured skin

Which miniature from Kingdom Death is your favorite?
So many good ones - Pinup Visionary, Pinup Nighmare Ram armor, Sci-fi savior, Dedheim Erza...it's a long list!
@@Zumikito cool.
are you on new tech sites as well like Odysee?
Came in expecting something along the lines of "I'm using oil paints and alcohol, of course there's no water!" 😅
That miniature got me acting up
Next time you want to skip water, just go full oil painting.
But don't lick the brush 😋🖌️

🎉
if the models that thick thick paints are fine
Just use tears as a substitute for water.
why didn't you work wet-in-wet on the mini?
Just leave the paint lightly textured on the thighs and bum and claim you've invented a super realistic cellulite effect.
Next next video: Can you paint miniatures without a brush?
No thinning whatsoever? You can just picture the twitching eye on Duncan Rhodes after he saw this.
Not very smooth. That's better than 90% of painters doing their very best work haha.
Amazing job and a brilliant video, pointless but so much fun to watch. I guess it proves you can paint even in a drought?!
The point is to spread your paint rather than overthinning it!
Any chance someone could get that mini you painted? Just asking for a friend…
It's called Sunlion Erza from Kingdom Death
He'll yea
Thicc
This video is pointless but I’m still enjoying it 👌

the 'no drybrushing' bit seems wrong to me. you can absolutely drybrush for display pieces, you just have to use a small brush to drybrush with.
sooo no dilution......but spit is fine xD
Your suppost to use water😮
I use vinegar because I'm bitter 😅
